I know a capo isn't very metal, but, with 29 frets you can tune it down 2½ steps and put a capo on the 5th fret, play a lot of Metallica songs, move the capo to the 4th and play most of Slayer's songs, down to the 3rd to play Death songs and you're getting into some 7-string riff territory on the open strings. All the while you have a minimum of 24 frets to play with when you're playing lead and the whammy would come in especially handy for Slayer lead guitar.

First you get the capo, then comes the math rock.

Or... you could try playing in the original key WITHOUT a capo and turn Metallica into technical-thrash. I will say that the lack of sustain in the upper register is a bit of a turn off -- at least for me. Even with the upper-fret access, I will say that bends and vibrato up there (with the frets THAT close together) seems like you're attacking a shield wall with a swiss-army knife.

I like how these guitars like ormsby are becoming more neutral in their design rather than just being black or white for metal. Makes it more timeless.

Glenn is the hero we deserve: a really good role model for people who want to progress at something. Very humble about he's most expert in, not afraid to put himself out there about his insecurities, not afraid to tell you that getting what you want is unlikely and hard, but that doesn't make it a good thing to persevere. Even when he's mean, it's about showing people not to listen to haters or to hold people to a high standard, or to give people tough love. You can see this channel gives him life and I hope only the best for him.

Those Washburns are awesome. Guitarist in my last band owned one for a while and it played nice. First time I ever saw one was in the photo of Bobby Koeble I got when I joined the Death fan club, and when I met him several years ago at a Death To All show he said he still has it. DTA will be on tour next month and hopefully he'll play it.

I bought one of the 30 fret Ibanez RGs and the last couple frets don't really have much use, but the excess range let's you do some tapping on 27th fret and get that super high note at the end of a solo. Best red sparkle finish I've ever seen. It has some kind of active pickups that let you mimic a 5 way switch with just a humbucker and single coil. Cool guitar, but not my daily player. I love extended fret ranges. I'm a bit jealous of the Steven's Extended Cutaway and crackle paint. Those things are hard to find.

Glenn, most high E sustained notes are made from the bent 22. Yes, those are 29s, but I'm guessing nobody actually uses the last few frets, like we barely touch on 24's. Nice to have the option, but not utilized much.
@maxminimus6198
@maxminimus6198 Жыл бұрын
I use the 24th fret on high E regularly, and miss it when it is gone. One of the pre-requisites on a guitar for me is it must have at least 24 frets. Can't do anything less than that. On my Ormsbys, I can get the 25, 26 & 27 frets on the high E string to sing, but beyond that, I don't find the last couple of frets very usable. I like having those extra frets though, and use them sparingly, when I want to really make a solo soar, or chase away all the dogs in the neighborhood.
@BetoxSound
@BetoxSound Жыл бұрын
you might not use the 29th fret. But having those extra frets means your access to the 22nd fret is seamless, no neck heel or top horn in the way. Compare doing a bend on the 22nd on this guitar vs a strat or a LP, see which one is easier?

I still have my mid 90's Washburn Mercury (and I have a friend that still has his too!).. great live workhorse for me over the years, and yes I had to replace the trem. It's a bit noisy for recording, though.. I can draw a similar comparison with my newer Jackson Dinky, which has lock-in trem bar, EMG's and makes a lot less noise, so guitar manufacture has improved (high budget price point). But I still love my Washburn dearly - every nick earned (except the one the bass player caused!) - so true :)

I've recently been looking into 29 fret guitars myself. I always loved 7 and 8 strings because I liked the idea of tuning down but still having access to the high notes, but if I got myself that 7 string Ormsby I worked out I could tune it all the way down to drop F and STILL have that standard high E. Probably gonna save up for a tx gtr this year because of it!

Glenn, if you're interested in some advice that'll make your playing cleaner, try this: You've got a huge amount of angle going on in your picking hand, which is causing a lot of random noise in between the notes you're playing, this mostly applies to leads btw. A friend of mine who is a ridiculously good, classically trained guitarist showed me this trick and it has really done wonders for the cleanliness of my shredding. Another thing you can do, is try to lightly mute the strings with your right hand (yes, even the one that's ringing out), really close to the bridge, so it's only just a tiny bit muted, that also cleans up a lot of the unwanted crap. Other than that, great progress man, keep it up!
@JoeBaermann
@JoeBaermann Жыл бұрын
Regarding mutes it depends on what you like best. I do apply a lot of mutes, especially for stacato riffs and runs, but some like Marty Friedman absolutely despise the idea of muting. One thing that would help Glenns solo progress is to listen and learn a few simple solos and the techniques used in them, could be as simple as some 70’s pentatonic rock solos with a few additional notes, some bends, a triplet run etc. Think Glenn can pick it up fast, should help to develop some timing and spice things up with additional notes and technique. I don’t really believe in the spider-run, especially without using a metronome. Does anyone do solo runs that way anyway? I mean like really fast runs? Would be better to invest the time in learning fast runs and the scales they are played in and why they are played in those scales, that too develops muscle memory, insight and hearing.

I own one of almost every Ormsby model (all except Futura and Metal V), and play them all regularly. I really dig their guitars. I am very sensitive to neck dive. The 6 string version of the SX Carved top balances beautifully - no neck dive. The TX 6 string balances nicely as well with no neck dive. 7 strings in general are tough to get to balance right because of the added weight of the large headstock, and extra tuner hardware, but I find my 7 string SX Shark slight neck dive manageable and not a deal breaker by any means, especially when using a more "grippy" strap, as you suggested. I share similar sentiments regarding 7 string guitars, but if you want a balanced no-neck dive 7+ string, the Ormsby Goliath is the one to go for. My back thanks me every time I pick up my goliath shark for practice sessions that last a few hours (I always stand when I play). Only thing I'm not a fan of is the tuners - but to be fair, I haven't found tuners on any headless guitar I've tried so far that I actually like (including my Strandberg). The worst neck dive of the Ormsby models I've owned was the Rusty Cooley model, it had horrendous neck dive - so much so that I had to sell it. A shame really, because I absolutely loved every thing else about the guitar. The 6 string metal X has significant neck dive as well, so I imagine the 7 string version is horrendous. I'm very interested in trying a metal V, but those exotic shaped headless guitars are a pain in the a$$ to find a decent stand or hanger for. I like the seafoam green, but I tend to go for the over the top, colorful outrageous looking guitars they make. I recently acquired a TX in Shell pink, and I love it - reminds me of a modern take on a 57 Chevy, when they used to make them in those types of colors. As for my unsolicited suggestions: For those thinking about trying an Ormsby, or wanting to try a multi-scale, I'd suggest the 6 string carved top SX, Hype or TX. For 7+ strings - definitely consider the Goliath.
@BetoxSound
@BetoxSound Жыл бұрын
X and Vs would have neck dive no matter what, there is no top horn to balance the guitar on a strap. But I love the seating position on my MetalX the best. I also dont get neck dive on my Hype 7. I also play mostly seated

@@kenjicarlos8402 I know and it's a shame. On the other hand, their old instruments are still out there in the used market and they are hidden gems for not a lot of money. All the best for me 😁

You could buy a set of 8s and tune a 7 string up to f sharp standard and get the same effect with even wider ranger and better options.

What's great about extra-fret guitars is you can tune them in lower tunings and still get really high range in the note selection, which really justifies no longer needing extra low strings. Tune the washburn to b standard, and you still have enough range to reach that high e....if you can get your fingers to hold the note hahaha
