Why a Top 10 NBA Draft Pick Was Traded in 3 Years. Obi Toppin was selected with the eighth pick of the 2020 NBA Draft by the New York Knicks. In just over three years, he was traded to the Indiana Pacers. What's happening to his NBA Career?

Short answer: the Knicks ruined his development by never letting him do anything but stand behind the 3 point line, and Thibs would pull him out of the game immediately for even the slightest of mistakes while letting Randle do whatever he wanted with no repercussions.

Thibs was the reason rose didn’t blossom and kept having injury problems in my opinion. He was never a good coach and everyone of his stars seems to get injured consistently

His NBA career is about to fully begin. He never had a chance on the Knicks. They did not care to play him. However, on the pacers, he's on a team with someone he already has chemistry with and who is also one of the best PGs in the league.

Toppin is inserted in the line up with Quickley who is not a pass first point guard and prefers to score the ball. Plus with Burks who see's the rim everytime he touches the ball. All these plus how short of a leash Thibs has for him really stunted his growth.

Played great this year-even as a starter with Haliburton-but still his biggest doubter & nemesis is the darn, stubborn coach. Only complaint of Obi his defense, so Carlisle brings in his boy Siakam-who’s got a worse overall defensive score than Obi🤦🏻‍♂️

He did better in NY with less minutes. I thought giving him starters minutes would increase his points per game to around 17 but he went from 7 points to almost 10 while grabbing less rebounds somehow. Toppins is a cherry picker that runs the floor always to get ahead for a lob but doesn’t rebound. I wish him luck but maybe Thibodeau was right to trade him

I've worked out with him and I can tell you he has No lateral movement at all, I'm a 6'6" guard with blown knees and back and he could not stay in front of me and he is a very bad at trailing like if he is looking to block me from behind I slow up and he will foul me by running me over or a shot fake puts him in air and completely ends his defense. He has a problem with frustration and once he gets down on himself he trys to get going but makes mistakes that only make it worse and it takes him completely out of the game. Athletic as hell but gets ahead of himself defending the pick and roll and is late on help weak side defense more than a n he is on time. 80% of his problems are in his head but that's harder to overcome than any injury and his side to side movement he looks like is is off balance and top heavy so once his body starts going one way hard he has a very hard time recovering to go the other way if he is met with a cross over and he trips over his own feet when he over corrects. Work on his 3 and run to the corners and pull off a PJ Tucker type career. He has up side but can it be unlocked?

Knicks need to fire Thibs immediately, he got them as far as they can go. He doesn’t hold any of his players accountable, he doesn’t even try to develop any young players unless they’re booming out of the gate. NY lacks an identity and culture from within. A mess of a franchise that makes simple decisions complicated, example being IQ still isn’t extended.
@brocode5984
@brocode5984 9 ай бұрын
I don’t think we lack identity. Under thibs we’ve been a top 5 defense almost every year. Our problem is we lack creativity, if you watch the games it’s nothing but Randle and Brunson iso, looking for shots, and passing if they can’t create an open look. That’s our offensive scheme and that’s it.

Your commentary does not point out that Obi had many games where he would be on fire ..scoring 18 points in 13 minutes... making plays on both sides of the ball and then he would get mysteriously pulled from the game. for Randle even when Randle was playing horribly. Obi could have been a star in New York in my opinion but Thib's has his favorites and he was loyal to Julius to a fault. Is Thibs a Good coach..yes...he brings structure but he is far from perfect..if your not one of his guys your in trouble. He hurt Obi's confidence and cost him money ( Contract wise ) by not playing and developing him, stunted the Kids growth and never used his skill set properly. I wish Obi well and hope he gets with a team where he can get Starts minutes he is not perfect but he has a skill set that can take him far , he just needs a coach who believes in him and the right team. Obi would have walked through a wall for Thib's playing in the Garden had he just given him a fair shot.

Nah he is not that good honestly, no iso scoring , no offensive rebounds( not that much defensive either) , not a good defender, weak shooter (25% from 3 on 2.7 attempts an night ) , can only score on clean looks to the basket. He may be a good fit next to tyrese but so would any slasher / shooter in the league . Wish he was better but he us just not.
