Adrian has been a phenomenal guitarist for years but it's his ability to keep reinventing himself and adding new things to his playing that I love. When he left Iron Maiden, he was one of two great guitarists but in 2022, he stands head and shoulders above the other two. He's criminally underappreciated by many, yet in my view he's one of the standout guitarists in the world.

Adrian Smith is just getting better, isn't he? I've seen Maiden live since the 80's and he has such a high bar in his live performances. Some solos can sound pretty simple until you try to play them and realize that they're many times very tricky with small subtle details that are necessary to make it all sound right.

I`m loving Daves playstyle (all 3 guitarists really) but lets say in the past 10 years he became a bit lazy constantly repeating himself. Same thing with Janick who has my favourite playstyle and fantastic dynamic on stage but his solos doesnt have that same passion like for example in early 2000. Adrian definitely is the only guitarists who grows and improves himself trying different genres.

That’s what I always bring to conversations as the point of why, to me, Adrian is the best guitarrist on Maiden. Album after album, he’s always bringing something new to his play. A new cool trick, or even a more advanced technique. And live, man! He elevates his already amazing solos adding this cool gimmicks! Although I love Paul Gilbert, Vinnie Moore, YJW…Adrian is my favorite even if he can’t shred like them, but his coolness takes him beyond. Great video!

Amazing analysis. I always wondered what makes him change his solos or sometimes, what makes him wanna go back. Notably in the reunion tour he did change the aces high solo a lil, then in the 08 somewhere back in time tour went back to the original version to yet again change it in 09. I personally love every new texture he finds in a solo and goes on to tell you that a song is always alive.

Ciao Nico!

My most admired thing about Adrian these days, is how he only improvises, with style, Regards, but recovered only ever do a minor degree, to add something different to other solos, he has written. Case in point: he actually improved the "writing on the wall solo", in the recent live performances, which barely seemed possible. Many other guitarists tend to over improvise and change the entire mood, of the solo and maybe even ruin the mood of the entire song, the solo has been written for. Maybe they are just bored, and don't realise that this iis really frustrating for the audience, who are Immersing themselves in the experience, which then gets ruined mid song

It's just that they're playing with a bit of a looser feel so they're not perfectly locked in and they're also phrasing some of if slightly differently. Already when you double solos on an album you'll get that effect a bit (like Randy Rhoads) so live it's even more pronounced 😊

I get the feeling it's his tribute to fallen "Brothers in Arms" guitarists. Which he knows he can do live but not so much on a studio album because the "Govna" would never have any part of that. So being able to express himself and also a way to pay tribute and what better way to express it than in a live performance. I really like it because I have seen the band so many times that witnessing different versions live makes it kind of all new again to an old seasoned veteran fan as myself. I can't profess to say I am a guitar technique or theory nut but I know what my ear likes... there is something about Adrian that is special. He hasn't the flash brilliance of Dave Murray or the rabid speed of Janick Gers but he has a presence. His playing is outstanding - no questions there. But it is his delivery that makes him so brilliant. He just has a way of playing great sounding guitar. Maiden - in my view - missed him more than they did Bruce. Murray gets all the plaudits as the great soloist and special guitarist, but I have long felt that Adrian is the more important, the binding agent of the group. I can't explain it but I find him a remarkable player and team musician... there is something to be said about a guitarist that thinks about his play... (take note Mr. Malmsteen!!) I see Adrian a bit like Jimmy Page (my all time favourite guitarist). Page may not be the best technical player but he plays the best music [imho]. Jimmy likes to make a landscape, play sounds that are just good to listen to... not a million non-sensical notes, just the sounds that are great to listen to... and I feel Adrian is the modern day equivalent. They can both play technical stuff but generally prefer to play music that is good to listen to - and that my friends, is the biggest compliment I can pay to him [them]. He just plays sh!t hot music!!

Adrian has always been a great player. But he has serious improved his playing. Playing with Roy Z and Richie has probably helped with that
@Rowlph8888
@Rowlph8888 Жыл бұрын
Well, from Richie's rundown, on how they composed songs, I think it's Ritchie who has gained more from the partnership and he is the one who is frequently mentioning how much he wants to do a 2nd album. Adrian's sabbatical and dabbling with different genres during this time, definitely improved his play, but he still remains the greatest songwriter for Meeting a song, with the perfect tunes, to improve them synergetic. Roy Z is great technically, as a guitarist and a producer with many other strings to his bow, than only guitar work, but I still feel he has less intuitive feel for "Exclusively" guitar composition, than Adrian Ritchie is a maverick, but he never worked with a 2nd guitarist and Adrian brought in a lot of innovation, that he was very grateful to experience

He's so musical. But he and everyone in the band's best work is up until 7th Son.

YOU ARE WRONG AND YOU ARE UNEDUCATED. 7th son of a 7th son is by far Maiden's most popular work. Nelson, you lack any kind of creative mind and should stop posting comments promptly. That means you should stop. You are not educated enough to speak about any of this material.

@@benburnett8109 Yes, 7th Son is great and one of their best. That's what I was saying. And the entire band besides Gers were the same members up until that point. Get your facts straight before mouthing off like an idiot.

Strange and cool how Adrian seems to evolve to a more bluesy and more technical style at the same time. Do you think the latter was influenced by a certain Richie Kotzen?
@Rowlph8888

No, Adrian has always been steeped in the blues, way before Ritchie, even started playing. He always wanted to do a bluesy, hard rock album tthat's why he and Richie were drawn to each other in the 1st place. Listen to richies breakdown, of the way they composed and youwill find that Richie gained a lot of new innovation to his own songwriting, through Adrian, as he said that Adrian brings in really good ideas, and he added, " probably because he's used to working, and compromising with other guitarists and not exclusively, on his own "

I'm sure he picked up a few things from Richie but as far as I know, he really started refining his technique after playing with Roy Z. He's talked about that in an interview from a while back where Roy apparently called him out on his technique when they first started playing together. 😄

@@LicksOfTheBeast Oh yes, Don't get me wrong, Ritchie and Roy are mind blowingly good artists, I'm sure Adrian learnt a lot, from Ritchie, and vice versa. As regards his technique, yes, I heard that Roy had mentioned it, and that's partly, but not the only reason that I said, Roy is incredible technically. Don't forget when Adrian started learning, there were far fewer sources of good practice, so most guitarists of his generation learnt by copying and feel.This may be the reason, why i think that Adrian has superior compositional "feel", for the structures to make them maximise synergy for the song as a whole, rather than overindulging and writing solos that are virtuoso, but don't fit the mood of songs.maybe that's because because of the way he had to learn to play in the 1st place

But smething more of Dave "The Great" Murray"? For me the BEST!
@Rowlph8888
@Rowlph8888 Жыл бұрын
Dave is brilliant and fluid, but mostly "off-the-cuff", which requires less analysis, as he is less compositional. Just watch Dave and marvel,at the natural talent. Doesnt require a breakdown. Picking apart Adrian's more thoughtful compositions, is more interesting

@@benburnett8109 Jannik is that you? When Adrian left, so did the spirit of Iron Maiden. Personally i think that Jannik is a shit player compared to Mr. Smith and Mr. Murray.

Yes, I recently came across those and didn't really get into them back in the day. I was surprised at how heavy his riffs were, in his work with bruce. It was really bordering on thrash, or doom metal riff-making, but with any metal/hard rock lyrics and vocal delivery. It was really interesting Bruce and Adrian compositions are alla so organic - anything goes, 2 really flexible and easy-going blokes. Steve is very lucky, that this is the case, because otherwise maiden and would not have succeeded as they did, with other band members, similarly single-minded and stubborn, as him
