"Akira predicted the 2020 Tokyo Olympics" That, or Akira left such an impact that people spent 25 years trying to get Tokyo to the 2020 slot just because (Akira released in 1988; Japan won the bid to host the 2020 games in 2013).

Not the first anime I saw, that title is held by warriors of the wind that I saw on HBO. Akira was a movie I remember renting at a place called music plus. I was 8 or 9 and my mom had no idea what she was getting me, neither did I. That night I went home and was scarred for the rest of my life. Best anime ever.

I LOVE Akira. Kaneda is the first anime figure i ever got as a kid. I was born in 92, so the figure I had was already aged when i got it. As a kid, this film scared me. It still freaks me out a bit, but i absolutely adore the gross evolution throughout it

Akira is a hugely important movie, which 'brought' (the concept of) anime to the western world, but also animation to a mature serious audience. It was a mature and serious story. It broke boundaries, and at that time, could basically only have been told through animation. That said, the manga it's based on, is even better. Much much better.

Akira is like a phenomenon.....its like describing the effect and magic of Starwars for the 1st time...or the majesty of The Lion King. Its just an absolute Marvel.

Tony! Omg good to see you, man! Akira is one of my favorite movies of all time. I was only like 7 when I first watched it. It opened my mind to anime, because later MMX4 was released, and Robotech was a daily thing and my love grew tenfold. It also features the first anime boob that I laid eyes on! Seriously though, that movie is a work of art. I had a silk poster of the movie too, but it was stolen.

This was my first anime I ever watched. I was perhaps 10 years old and I remember BBC 2 advertising a late night showing at 2am or something. So, I stayed up with headphones plugged into my ancient colour tv, vhs recorder primed and ready to go. And in those small hours of weekday night my young mind was just blown completely away by this unknown subtitled "cartoon" I was not supposed to be watching. Luckily my parents were none the wiser. And I have been hooked on Anime ever since!

The moving having 160,000 animated cels goes hand-in-hand with the actual length of the source manga, which is more than 2,500 pages long. I've read it a couple of times, and will do so again. The artwork is fantastic, and the story is far, far deeper than any one-off movie -- as good as it is! -- could properly present.

I saw *Akira* in a movie theater in the east village when I was 12 (1989)... my mind was *_blown_* (as was everyone else there, all 10 of them).

One thing the video missed is Akira's huge impact on the cyberpunk genre. Akira essentially redefined cyberpunk. Most of the later cyberpunk works that followed Akira were influenced by it, from cyberpunk anime like Ghost in the Shell and Battle Angel Alita, to Hollywood movies like The Matrix and Dark City, to video games like Final Fantasy VII, Metal Gear Solid and Deus Ex. And many of these Akira-inspired cyberpunk works went on to be very influential in their own rights. Anime, Hollywood and video games have all been greatly influenced by Akira, as a result of its huge impact on the cyberpunk genre.

Man listening to you talk about Anime in the 90s really brought me back...you're not lying that trying to find anything to watch was obscenely difficult. I think there's probably a good argument to be made for the popularity of Dragon Ball Z (maybe even Toonami in general) being in part due to the fact that it was one of the few easily available at the time. Although I still remember the 9am Saturday morning anime movies on the Sci-Fi channel...that's where I was first introduced to anime actually: Casshan: Robot Hunter followed by Vampire Hunter D. Once a friend introduced me to Bio-Booster Armor Guyver I was irrevocably hooked.

I remember the first time I knew of it's existence was when I was a wee lad. A commercial for the VHS came out on KDOC oddly enough. It wasn't until years later when I was at Hollywood Video that I came across it accidentally and right away I remembered the commercial nearly a decade before. I finally got a chance to watch it and after doing so I had to have my own copy.

Great stuff, but why didn't you make a numbered point to talk about the sound design? The music has always stuck with me since i first saw it way back when, even today. I can still hear the drumming intro and then the bike engines... then the choir starts.

To be fair, Akira did have one part with CGI. The part where the scientist was looking at the digital glowing energy data presentation when observing the powers that Tetsuo had.

I watched this movie for the first time when I was 17 I think in my friends house. We were lit and it had just came out. I was amazed back in 95 and I’m still amazed today. Ghost in the Shell, the original not the remake was another one on par with Akita though. Those two are definitely my top two of all time. I would have to say though the most badass of all was MDS Geist. Not the best in animation but the dude was unstoppable. His armor too. That midnight black and gold trimmed set is the shit. Man this brought back a lot of good memories. Very nice video as well. Everything you said was spot on about this movie. The actual meaning behind it though still boggles me a bit. Akita’s organs brought back a super powerful being or was in Tetsuo?

Akira is such an iconic piece of cinema, it was part of the curriculum for the senior seminar took in college called "tokyo in the modern era"

one time, i think it was in 1993 or something, a local channel aired this movie...i was blown away...i went out , for weeks, searching for it on vhs...no luck...years later....i was in a bookstore, there was a shelf called ''kids movies'' , i casually skimmed it...then i froze up, there was a tape, in a white plastic case...it said ''akira'' on it...i picked up, i couldn't believe it, i was holding a vhs tape of akira, these were years before the internet and streaming and online purchases...it was a miracle...i found a vhs copy of akira...and it was for like $10...i ran home, saw my brother in the neighborhood with the guys..i showed him the tape...he was dumbstruck....we rushed home, went to out room, closed the door and watched that movie all weekend non stop....it was brutal, gory, bloody and it has scenes we knew that our parents would kill us if they knew we were watching it.....i laugh now when i know i can just log in to amazon and buy things, but we lived in an era where finding niche things was down to dumb luck...same thing happened years later with SERIAL EXPERIMENTS LAIN on DVD, and GHOST IN THE SHELL on VCD....what a time it was...
