The first stage of The Mimic Method is learning how to move your articulators the same way natives do.
Each of these movements/sounds must be referred to in some way to make communicating about them easier. Problem is, if you communicate using the normal spelling system, there is massive opportunity to confuse your listening.
As I explain in this video from our course, the only way around this is to stop using normal letters and instead learn to use IPA. People are intimidated at first, but in our program you learn it quite naturally.

I love your passion for language and culture,, I nerd out on learning languages too... That said, this video is super meticulously nerdy to try and learn sounds from symbols doesn’t seem practical. Memorizing symbols to represent sounds seems unnecessary and much less important than simply using ones listening skills and repeating them. Symbols convey meanings but dont do much to help one replicate the sound they hear with the muscles and lips and tongue in my mouth. It’s simple acute listening and repeating over and over - jus my 2 cents! This is the kind of complex explanation that only seems practical to repeat, recycle, and re-teach as an academic qualified practice which is overall not that practical. Anyway, i like the music and rhythm of language videos so much!

Indeed, what matters most is your ability to mimic the physical movements. But for the movements you can't do intuitively, you need to have some way of thinking and talking about the movement. Symbols are simply referents to the movement, so you can externalize them from your mind and discuss them with other people without getting mixed up. People are inevitably going to discuss the movements. Question is, what terms/symbols will they use to refer to them? If not IPA, the discussion will default to native spelling conventions, which are inconsistent, incomplete, and not universal. This creates even more confusion, pulling us ever further away from the true physical nature we're trying to mimic. IPA seems intimidating to people at the beginning, but with my process anyone can learn, and everyone who does learn is always very grateful that they did learn, because it makes everything much more clear.
