Keeping the beast tamed is an ongoing struggle. Being a family man I often don't have the option to paint at my hobby table, so I use my mobile paint tray. I got it from an online retailer and it has slots for paints, brushes, tools etc. It's handy when the family gripes about Dad not being around in the common areas.

Your videos are consistently excellent. I am very glad to have found your channel. I think I find your perspective so refreshing because you pose in public many questions I thought were to myself only. I came to peace with my paint demon after I realized I was getting a bottle of liquid fun/imagination and not being some sort of low-end hoarder.

Got here from Geek Gaming Scenic's "recommendations" video, and rather enjoyed this video. Some good food for thought, and definitely some inspiration on hobby setup and organization.

Wow 172 comments, now that's growing! Feels good to know someone else, specially you Alex, feel that way about colors. For the past 15 years I've only painted stuff I sculpted myself and the reason behind this is that when I feel the painting urge it's the paints calling me so, usually my hobby time involves being "seduced" by a color or scheme, then sculpt something that could meet that painting urges. No rules set nor game related, just an excuse to slap the colors I wanted. Still I said that before in your painting sets video: that is a good star's but a decade doing so taught me you can end having redundancy in hues, many blues and not so many yellow or whatever. That's why I ended up getting the scale 75 fantasy and games sets, in hopes to get a 'balanced' whole range. Watching the video for the second time now. I really can relate to the "going to the store and being attracted to paints" part. Keep the good stuff coming and stay safe!

That paint rack is fantastic and makes me want to organise my painting area even more than the set of drawers we currently have. One day! Seeing the sticker for Appleby in your workshop made me smile too - I'm from just up the road from and drive past Appleby-in-Westmorland every time we go to visit my family.

lol... see, this is why I stay with 2 brands. When I first got back into mini-painting (I used to paint back in my teenage years back in the 70's and 80's) a couple of years back, I was used to having primary colors (Red Blue and Yellow), black and white and a brown... and used just those for a year. I got pretty good at mixing paints. I'm semi-retired now and have a bit of funds that I put towards a retirement-hobby. So I got more paint... but I know how that demon grows. Take care!

Another awesome video. I totally agree that philosophy fits right in with any creative outlet. Making the time, and space, for our hobby and keeping things organized; at least for me, keeps the hobby enjoyable and less stressful.

Always appreciate your thoughts! I had similar issues with my initial paint set up. I ended up with nail polish racks that are wall mountable, side by side. Good all my paint and I have room to add more. I can see them all at a glance and everything is much more organized and easy to find.

That's a great little solution. Looks very utilitarian. My paints all live on two selves of an IKEA bookcase, sporadically organised.

First paints to buy: Buy a basic set that contains at least one of the following: black, white, bone colour, a grassy green, a neutral yellow, a neutral red, a neutral blue, silver. You'll probably want a basic brown (although you can make this by mixing blue, red and yellow), a skin tone suitable for whatever you are painting (because you're going to use loads of it and you don't want to mix it - probably an armour colour for the same reason) and a black wash and brown wash because every basic paint scheme calls for it. Yes you can start without the bone (mix a little yellow with a lot of white) and the green (mix your blue and yellow), but chances are you'll use them both loads, so why waste time mixing them up. If you want to expand from that the recommended starter selection for any paintings is called the 6 primary pallet, basically two primary colours: - An orangey red - Cadmium Red - A violet red - Crimson Red or Quinacridone Red - A purpley blue - Ultramarine Blue - A greeny blue - Cerulean Blue - An orangey yellow - Cadmium Yellow - An greeny yellow - Arylide Yellow. Having these six, plus a silver, black, white and a wash mixing medium will give you the ability to make 70%-90% of paint colours on the market (minus neons and very pure looking colours). Certainly a good starting place. Thankfully most painting companies have done the hard work for you and you'll find they already supply starter sets with all or most of these paints (or similar paints) in them, plus a few more. You might have to buy one or two extras in some cases. Vallejo 70101 is a pretty good starter set IMHO - goes for under 25 GBP on Amazon. The only issue is it lacks a greeny yellow and a greeny blue. Plus you'll need to get that brown and black wash or a wash medium - Army Painter do good ones. Although their brown washes can be a little inconsistent between pots. If I was going to get a GW starter set, I would get the the 40k one as it at least comes with some of the basic primary colours listed above - but tbh, they all look pretty poor and expensive for what you get. I hope this helps someone.

Nice paint rack and great video - as always. I build myself a wooden carrying case, that sits under the table. Whenever I need it, I can put it on the table. It has two symmetrical sides. Each containing 40 dropper bottles. It was half empty when I build it half a year ago - now it is full :)

I like your style, there aren’t many minipainting channels that look like yours. I would love to be proven wrong. Though you were British for a short moment but then I heard the Swedish and realised yes this man has a lot of style. I can relate more. Also the cinematography or photo I don’t know what is what, it very much works. Also how you give the viewer the why and your purposes. Not just the how. Very important. I like the string hula conversion very much, would you mind showing me the ropes I want my own!

I'm glad I'm not the only one, I have a lot of paint. A lot. I don't like mixing paint, I like being able to pick up a pot and it's the exact same colour every single time, without the need for me to work some alchemical feat. I'd be like Blackadder, looking for the "purest green!". Great work on the paint shelving btw, it looks great!

I have literally just started with painting minis, I have cut a cardboard box and turned it into a painting station, but I'm already looking at upgrading and I've only got as far as putting primer on my ork boyz. 😊

I comment rarley but watch all of your videos and have to tell you that they are lovley. I take helpful stuff away or see things that make me smile because I have been there and would have wished for somone to point me in the right direction in a polite non judgeing way instead of figureing stuff out myself. For the first time I want to suggest a future topic. Filters over true metallic metall. On social media it's a trending topic but nobody gives any good advice instead there is always .. "buy an airbrush and clear paints" or "use contrast paints over silver". I didn't test much myself so far but with Contrast Paints, Clear Paints f.e. Tamia, Inks from GSW and Scale 75 there are a lot of ways to produce colored metallics via a filter. In addition there would be the possiblity of direct colored metallics. But I rambled enough :) Maybe you want to do it, maybe not. I will keep watching anyway ;)

Its called 'layout influenced design' meaning a good layout of tools and materials will make your work better because everything that should be easy is easy. A good shop set up is worth 2 assistants.

I recently cut down massively on all my paints as it was actually making it very difficult to pick out colour schemes and I found myself often mixing my own colours on my wet palette anyway - it’s all too easy to fall into the trap of needlessly buying paints all because you’ve gone off what they recommend on the W back of miniature boxes or because you’ve followed along to a KZfaq tutorial. My hobby space thanked me massively for selling 65 of my 100 odd citadels lol

Where did you buy it and is it something you can recommend? I have a fairly small space, so having a solution that is easy to pack away would be good.

I understand this big time, I have alot of paints and will have some more on the way as well (my first oil paints) But tbh my work area is very small, it has my keyboard on it and my huge screen for gaming but its enough for now, I have a pretty good system for storing stuff boxes in boxes I can easily store away and take out as I need, it works well for myself and how things are atm, but one day I would love to make my own shelf or draw system for easy access at workstation meant just for hobby stuff. If I had to recommend one paint set for starting, it would definitely be Vallejo 70.140 Model Color Basic Colors USA set; such an universal collection of paints, you can't really go wrong here.

Currently I'm painting under a 2700K lamp and, while it is comfortable to the eye, I do feel like it sometimes slightly messes with the way I see the colours I'm actually painting
