The guy you're talking about going across the Gap? His name is Yellow Wolf. 100% legit story. Here's an addendum to that story; One time he didn't ride his own GoldWing to the Gap and instead flew in and rented one from a local rental shop. While he was picking up the bike he told the guy to just go ahead and buy another set of footrests. The guy asked him why and he YW just told him to do it and of course he'd pay for them. After YW had his fun and was leaving to go back home he brought that GoldWing back to the shop and lo and behold the footrests were worn down basically nubs. YW rides those bikes better than 99% of any sportbike rider up there at the Gap. The man is an absolute beast on a Goldwing. Anyways, I thought I'd share this story with you and whomever else decides they want to read it.

I am 72 years old and have been riding goldwing for many years. All my riding buddies ride HD and at first gave me guff for riding a rice burner. We have rode 30 k miles together, we have not made a trip without needing to go to a HD dealership because of a mechanical problem, not one trip. One had a front wheel bearing go bad and it Never had any grease in it from the factory. The stator which charges the battery went bad on one, 1100,00 dollars later we were on our way. Shifting linkage went bad on new bike , dealer replaced parts, 250 miles later it did it again. Defective parts from the factory. One bike took 7 quarts of oil to go 250 miles leaking and throwing all over the riders and the back of the bike. Dealer replaced rings ,seals and gaskets. It did somewhat better but still blew oil out of it. Long story short, a new engine from the factory solved the problem. I could go on and on with many more examples but won't. In that 30 k mile trips I had 0 problems with my wing. I know there will be na sayers about this post, that's ok everyone has an opinion. What is just stated is fact not opinion.

Little known fact: You cannot watch a motorcycle video on you tube about ANY bike other than a Harley, WITHOUT people mentioning HARLEY. It's as if people feel the need to validate the name on their tank. Strange phenomenon indeed. I think those new Gold Wings are awesome. Maybe Maurice should ride with me. 2005 Heritage Classic with 82,000 miles. Just put my third set of tires on it this summer (fourth set counting the ones that came on the bike). Outside of the pain in the ass oil/primary/transmission fluid changes (which I do myself and hate doing), I blew a fork seal on bad section of road in my town. A guy I know who's grandpa used to own a Kawasaki shop fixed it for me. Charged me 20 bucks. It always cracks me up when people state how unreliable Harleys are as my experience is just the opposite. Owned several Honda dirt bikes and crotch rockets before I got old and wanted a cruiser. Not one of those Hondas gave me a single problem. And I mean not one problem, they were all great bikes with great memories.

Maurice, I rode a Honda for years. Most of my friends had HD. I caught a lot of jokes my way. But I was always the one who had to go back to town to get something to fix their HD. And it was funny how many of the guys borrowed my bike.

I had probably owned my first R1 for about a year. I followed a Goldwing through a canyon road in Central Cal going to PCH from I-5. That Goldwing rider took me for one hell of a ride. I had no idea a bike that big could perform like that. He never got away from me, but he was fast. I was fighting hard to stay with him. He obviously knew the road well.

I have a Kawasaki Vaquero. It is the Voyager without a trunk. I currently have 20k on the bike. I live in Virginia and one trip took me to California and another trip took meto Yellowstone and Glacier National Parks. I am going back to California in June. The bike has never had an issue. It is much cheaper than the Goldwing. It has great power, 6 gears, cruise control, speakers, liquid cooled, a fixed fork mounted fairing, 1700cc v twin engine, floor boards, heel shift, hard bags and an engine guard. It is nimble and sporty while having many classic features. It is great but few people have them. If the price of a Goldwing gives you pause then get a Kawasaki Voyager or Vaquero. They are true cross country highway killers. I have done 1000 miles in a day on this bike and it never disappoints.

They don’t reply or answer questions but beg for subs. If you have never ridden before your MSF course, I would start with a smaller bike for a year then move up when you build confidence. If you have ridden before, try to test ride one to see how confident you are. The Wing is actually well balanced and easy to ride but can be intimidating at slow speed maneuvering if you don’t practice

Well - always worth a comment. I have owned 3 Gold Wings - 2 1500’s and 1 1800 - They were all excellent bikes for touring and reliability. Only criticisms were the foot position and putting highway pegs on made the leg spread too wide to be comfortable for long - removal process for rear wheel on the 1500 and access to Air filters etc on all. I have owned 4 Harley’s - a 2000 FLHT a Low Rider and a Superglide and currently own an ‘09 Ultra Classic. I have enjoyed them all and also being a Honda ST1300 owner would like be to try the new Gold Wing as I see it as more of an upgraded ST than what the previous ‘Wings were. What does for me in the end is the ‘feel’ of the Ultra - the more comfortable riding position - the rumble of the big V Twin etc I acknowledge that my Ultra is far more likely to have problems (47000 K’s so far without a problem) but I am willing to cop that for the ride experience.......I’m now 68 years old and find the relaxing ride on the Ultra at moderate speeds a real stress reliever........If I want to push harder on the twisty roads for a day or extended trip the ST is quite capable and also comfortable, not that I don’t ride the Ultra in the mountains - I do - but I just take in the scenery more......nothing against Gold Wings though - they well deserve all the credit they get. 😎🇳🇿

He was first then me then corvette. He was dragging every corner having a ball. He'd wave at every camera, one hand on the bars, with sparks flying off lol. I still have a few of the pictures somewhere. I had to push it pretty hard to keep up in corners and actually dragged my exhaust a few times haha. The friend in the vette had a hell of a time keeping up he said. Had it try to jump sideways once and scared him a bit haha. I wasn't able to put them on my Triumph Scrambler because I was putting barkbusters on, went with a large diameter cushy rubber grip. I need the larger diameter due to carpal tunnel issues, my hands go numb quickly dealing with the stock small diameter grips(especially on the throttle side). I also install a throttle lock so I don't need to keep constant pressure on the throttle hand.

I bought the one Sean had with the car tire on it but he had removed the car tire before I bought it. When I learned that mine was THE ONE I bought the tire and wheel from him. Tried it, didn’t like it, now it belongs to a hard core Darksider in Maine. It’s not for everyone! Love the wing though! It’s my 4th.

as for the handle grip its made to give you comfort and a little break on your hand that is if you ride long riding or long distance its much more comfy on your palms and fingers you just not used to it thinking you wont be able to handle the bar properly but look at you after few minutes u not talking about it anymore

Excellent bike for the price. I’m 40 and I would definitely buy a GW if I have the money. For the meantime, I will stick to an SUV until I’ll raise enough funds for that bike. I would like to have a CB500x and a PCX150 for city driving too.

I have a 2002 that looks exactly like this one in the video. When riding single, you'd think you were on a small crotch rocket, except that it's not top-heavy. The weight really disappears underneath you. I don't know how they made such a big bike feel so small (and I am 5'11" and weigh only 160 lbs.)! I always, always, always wanted a Harley FHS (??) 1200, until I rode one. The shaking, top heaviness, and the fact there was no shaft available for any amount of money sent me running ! I ended up buying nothing until 5 yrs later, I rode a friends GL 1000 (the early 4-cyl Goldwing) and I was hooked. Then came 1200, then 6-cylinder 1500, then came the 1800...... and THAT's when I "pulled the trigger" and got one! I didn't think they could get any better than that, without just overdoing it and screwing something up..... handling, fuel mileage ( I get 45-50 mpg), or whatever goes wrong when manufacturers should stop! My wife was even pushing for me to get one, always mentioning wherever we may have travelled, "Boy, it sure would have been GREAT to have had a Wing under us on these roads, this mountain pass, this forested drive!" Etc, etc, etc. I plan on keeping mine until 300,000 miles or so & then get a new one if they add a double- overdrive to the transmission. Even then, I'm keeping the first one!

1800 Goldwing is smooth and fast with two people on it you never run out of power, running first, 3rd and fifth gears it hauls ass, The wing foot pegs are too high- a set of floor boards help. another good motorcycle was the 1992 Kawasaki Voyager 1200.XXI, no issues with it, easy to maintain. inexpensive way to get into a touring cycle, it had plenty of power and it runs forever.

Goldwings are awesome! It's just that simple. I really want a 2014 or 15 valkyrie as my 3rd bike or try to wait for the new one to become lightly used without the topbox the new F6B. That's my dream bike right now because I don't like to finance anything.

36 years young. Ride an old 1982 GL1100. Stripped off all the extra weight. 80+hp 65 lb-ft of torque. Stops harder, handles better pulls, away stronger than you'd ever expect. Smoothest bike I've ever ridden. The only thing a Gold Wing isn't good at is off road. Everything else, it's GREAT at.

After 26 bikes I got a newer Goldwing. My wife didn’t want a “seniors bike”, even though we’re in our early sixties. We had just recently put 150,000 kms on a BMW 1150 RT and loved it but it was a bit cramped for two up and all our gear. The Wing has been a revelation and she loves the Lazy Boy chair in the back. Not too fond of the brand new Wing though. It has lost some of its practicality. I like the new steering system and six speed tranny but that’s about it.

I grew up being spoonfed the dislike of plastic dressed bikes, and especially cruisers/tourers. Parents are all about the classics. I rode old BMW, Yamaha, a 75yo NSU, but then I bought a dirt-cheap Honda Pan European, the goldwings younger cousin. 1100cc 100hp V4, all comfort, but less fuss and bling than a GL. I absolutely love it. I hate that I love it, but goddamn, do I love this bike. It's bloody fast, super comfy, quiet, tons of storage, and very agile. You should try one!

The wing needs few accessories since everything is sooo good. Awesome seat, mirror placement, lighting, etc except 2 things to know. 1st, lean angle is not up there with sport tourers but still good. The 2nd thing is when you put you legs down , the seat being so wide, you ass shifts forward as you lower your legs. otherwise perfect as far as i am concerned. I owned a 2002 wing and now a 2014 wing and a 2021 r1250rt. I've had k1600 gtl, 2 fjrs, 2 vfrs , a cbr1100xx and a cbr 1000, zx9r, 2 zl 1000s, a v max, a zl600 and started out on a 81 kz440. nothing is as comfortable or designed to go cross country like a wing. Then they invented the 2018 and improved handling at the expense of the things the wing used to rule at. too bad.

I’m 27 and on my second Goldwing out of 4 bikes I’ve owned. First was an ‘81 1100 Interstate, I was sold. I’m a tall big frame guy and the Goldwing is just the perfect fit and very comfortable. Now I’m riding an ‘86 1200 Aspencade and I love it! Surprisingly nimble for such a huge bike, the old Goldwing’s are soooooo cheap to buy and maintain. Trust me I’d love to buy a HD Road King but I’m not paying that hefty price tag. For granted the old Wings are not the most stylish bikes by most peoples standards, but ever since I was a kid I always thought they looked like space ships all dressed up and thus I thought they looked sweet! When I ride with my friends they are always getting fatigued on their crotch rockets and I just think to myself, “we really need to stop again?”
@ronfriedman8740

Do what you want, but I ain't gonna cheap out by putting a damn car tire on my motorcycle. Maybe it doesn't matter quite so much if you're just pounding out Interstate miles, but I take my 'Wing through the twisties of the Southeast Appalachian Mountains and sliding down a ravine or slamming into a mountain wall will surely ruin your day. I typically get about 15,000 - 18,000 on a set of Bridgestone tires and they go for just over $300 on Wingstuff.com with another $100 for mounting and balancing. For me, that comes to a little less than $200 per year for tires ...anyone riding a sport bike goes through way more than that in one riding season.
