I'm not denying India has clean air and water problem, but there is something known as the environmental kuznets curve. Developing economies will have to sacrifice some of their environment in order to build infrastructure and develop the nation. All developed countries today had gone through that phase during the industrial revolution. So yes, India does not have to follow western regulations but should try to provide basic clean necessities while prioritizing development.

As working with an EV 3 wheeler manufacturer in hinjewadi pune I have points to make on this issue 1) Indian Corporate leaders (especially MSME) have no long term vision 2) They are miser on spending money on branding 3) They are miser on PR building and sales channel building, which also engages social media platforms. 4) I can make these points as working with them for past 4 to 5 months have made me realize these things

It's interesting hearing my country described in such a way. 😅 A few clarifications: 1. All of the crazy products you see at the supermarket are not necessarily because there's demand for it (like blueberry almonds). Often it's someone taking a risk to see if it will stick, aka the "marketplace of ideas" and many of these products don't make it. Major corporations are under constant pressure by shareholders to have growth and one way they do this is to try out new products. Often they get the ideas from market research. 2. Speaking of market research, it may be the case that US simply has a longer more established marketing culture than India, which may explain some discrepancies. 3. California has a lot of space and it "looks nice", but that's actually part of the problem and the state is one of the most unaffordable in the country with a massive housing shortage. Cali actually needs LESS space between stuff to bring down the price of homes right now. Even people in tech can't afford the prices of homes. Only millionaires can live in many parts. There's actually been a huge migration of Americans leaving California to go to other cheaper states like Texas, Florida and Arizona. Those are currently the fastest growing states with I believe Texas leading. It would have been interesting for him to go there. I'm glad he visited though! We like tourists.

Great video. I came back from my life in Marina, Dubai to Bangalore now, i see the developmental stages but it's way too crowded for a swift change for the most parts still as mentioned. The basics that we are used to abroad are viewed very premium in India and everyone in the business world monetize on this, even though the manufacturing, implementation and maintenance of decent quality of life overall would be the same. We really need to widen the perspective here. Something like how Jio disrupted the mobile network monopoly which let to India being focused upon by content creators of the world for the rise in viewership from our country.

Thank you for the great video Varun. Being architects and dealing with urban environments, I can confidently say that widening roads is not the solution. It does more damage than anything. A much better reference for urban development is Barcelona. Having lived there for a while, I can genuinely say that it is a much better blueprint for creating pedestrian and liveable cities instead of creating wider roads. Apart from that, your larger argument about space makes sense, but I do have to say that Indian Building Code does have them but it is largely the negligence of authorities and historical inheritance that the open space laws regarding buildings are not implemented. Complex for sure, but we need to start tackling them.

@eZraZ12
@eZraZ12 22 күн бұрын
Definitely agree with you with respect to the widening of roads and Barcelona being a good model for urban development. As an Indian architect living in the US, wide roads indicate a car dependent society and ignoring the needs of the masses with a deprioritization of mass transit, and honestly you need a car here to survive. Also, the so called "new decent buildings" are pigeon holes designed and built without any the residents in mind. Replicating things from the US in India would be a nightmare in the end.

@@saywhat777 If you look at Barcelona, the city department faced a similar issue of having too many cars on the road in the 1980's. Then to combat the problem they chose to not widen the roads, but to convert about 50% of the roads into pedestrian only and restricted car movement in 1993. This not only reduced the number of cars on the road but also lead to people having a very active lifestyle thus solving for pollution and reducing burden on infrastructure at the same time killing two birds with one stone.

I agree with mostly everything Varun said. American is built around building brands and building excellent products and marketing are two important steps towards it. Where I alightly disagree is on his take on services. While yea access to healthcare in India is easy and there are very good doctors and hospitals, its not that difficult in the US since US does have emergency and urgent care system. Secondly you can make reservations for restaurants, salons, yoga studio or gyms etc easily through apps. In my experience there is a difference in service and its expectations between India and US. In the US service is built around efficiency, you will find staff to be friendly and knowledgable whereas in India you I feel like the staff almost bows down to you but often lacks knowledge of the product they are serving.

Great video! On the difference in infrastructure between the US and India, widening roads should not be an aspiration for indian cities. There is a lot of research on this that has shown that increasing lanes only temporarily fixes congestion and then proceeds to induce more demand and gets back to being congested again. It almost always leads to increased cost, inconvenience, eventually congestion, noise and reduced air quality. European cities also have narrow roads, but differ from the US in density and differ from India in quality of public transportation. TLDR: Wider roads are not necessarily better, India needs better public transport.
