Soccer/Football is definitely growing in the United States, but as of now it's still not as popular in America as a few other major sports. But with Lionel Messi in MLS, the 2024 Copa America taking place, and the 2026 Fifa World Cup not far away, could the United States one day become a soccer-loving country?

I like and play both, but mainly baseball. A soccer game is easier to watch and usually more exciting, but there are exceptions. Sometimes they're equal lol. Sometimes baseball is better, but usually the soccer game is more fun to watch, and to play. but they're hard to compare since soccer is a faster paced game with less breaks and in baseball you get to smash a baseball someone is trying to throw past you. Have you ever hit a baseball with your full power, at the perfect launch angle, right on the sweet spot of the bat? It's something else man. Like scoring the perfect freekick.

I hear people here say Soccer doesn't have enough scoring too. For me, the lack of constant scoring just makes it that much sweeter when it does happen. It (usually) takes a whole lot of build-up and tactical prowess to get a goal and hearing the crowd blow the roof off the stadium when it finally does happen is something special.

@@leefox5596 as a baseball player I also think that watching baseball is generally boring. But I also think that about all sports. However, major league baseball has 162 regular season games and they only recently got sped up to take less time. Ain't nobody got time for all that. I like watching the San Francisco Giants in the playoffs, otherwise I usually don't watch their games. I also like watching team USA in the WBC and I like watching some of the games in the men's league I play in (if it's before or after one of my own games). @@leefox5596 soccer is different than baseball, it takes half the time, has only one break which is half replays and analysis, and has less games, so of course it's going to be more exciting in general to watch than baseball. But if you like a team you'll like to watch their big games.
@nofurtherwest3474
@nofurtherwest3474 28 күн бұрын
To enjoy it properly you have to understand pitching and hitting. There is always pitching and hitting going on so if you understand it then you're always into it. It gets pretty deep with different pitches and pitch counts and stuff that influence the pitching and hitting. The more you understand the more exciting it is, because there is always that question on every pitch of "what's going to happen". Its like a PK shootout, you are wondering what is going to happen for each kicker. In baseball the hitters are like PK kickers because each player gets a turn to bat and hit/score. Ie each player gets a turn to play offense.

7:02 missed an opportunity here - Soccer in the US is older than all sports. Maybe baseball has it beat. If you live in the Northeast and are the descendant of immigrants your ancestors probably followed Oneida Football club, Fall River Marksmen, Pawtucket, Newark, Peterson, or Philidelphia football clubs. Soccer predates American football. Soccer is not uniquely American but it is indeed American. Big sports media have done a good job lying to American sports fans over the years. Golf is Scottish.Baseball is rounders, football is rugby, hockey is a Canadian version of Scottish field hockey...What is the American sport? Basketball? Invinted by a Canadian? Everything we do is borrowed.

Can't dispute what you're saying! Soccer definitely has a long history in the United States, but perhaps an inconsistent one when compared to the other major sports, no? It took a long time for there to be an established domestic league. And when even looking abroad, having Champions League, Premier League, etc readily available to view on US Television is fairly recent too.

@@MrMM1007 I think you are referring to pre code football? Rules had not been set during this time in England or the US. I was going on about early established soccer teams in the US that predate all organized sports with the exception of baseball. Soccer is as American as apple pie unless you don't want it to be. The networks would have us believe that there are levels of Americanism to our sports and that some are more patriotic than others. Baseball - level one American - the best kind. 5 jets fly over each game. A traditional sing a long style anthem and so on.
@MrMM1007
@MrMM1007 9 күн бұрын
@@tripperdelaluna1 I have no problem with soccer being popular in the U.S. or any sport for that matter. People should play and watch the sport that brings them joy. But too often people misrepresent a sport, and ignore it's history, in order to claim superiority for their favorite sport. Usually that misrepresentation is about soccer and how it is the original football (it isn't, none of the codes are the pure original). The Oneida Club played the Boston Game, which was not soccer. It was more the pre-code type football that mixed rugby and association. I have heard that a more pure form of soccer was in the U.S. before 1869, but I don't think it was the Oneida team. Not that it matters because Americans do NOT hate soccer. It is quite sad how many sports fans seem to NEED that to be true. Like everywhere else in the world, Americans fall in love with the sport that their family, friends, and neighbors love . It is really that simple. I agree that there are people who use sports, like the networks, to claim fake information. In my opinion, international soccer fans are much more likely than our networks to use sports fandom as a tool to divide. There is a deep seated anti-Americanism streak in some fan bases, and it is based mostly on false presumptions

I’ve played soccer 10+ years and it’s kind of similar to baseball here. They are sports that are beautiful and fun if you truly understand the game or have experience playing. I know baseball is popular in America but I still find a lot of “casual fans” who only follow basketball/football. I think the main reason has to do with culture and tv broadcasting. On tv you see just pass, pass, pass and it can feel like forever before someone actually scores. Compared to football which is a slower paced sport as well and not too high scoring but on tv they hide the “non action” very well. After each play you get a full replay and breakdown, they’ll show the fans,coaches or put on some highlights from earlier in the game and then before you know it the next play is about to begin. Then you got the cultural element, basketball and football both have similar atmospheres. Cheerleaders, halftime shows, theatrics. I definitely think if soccer and baseball had adopted these elements sooner they could be the two biggest sports in America. Btw just think if you’ve ever watched a basketball or football game with no crowd or no atmosphere it can get boring fast. This is the fate that soccer and to an extent baseball have gone through.

@@GravaJ that’s true but generally speaking the amount of scores in baseball is around 5-6 per team, per game, so a total of 8-12 scores for the whole game. So you more likely to see a batter change the outcome of a game with one swing. While soccer is a lot lower scoring, So those counter attacks in soccer almost always never amount to a goal. It’s like how in soccer the team that scores first usually wins the game due to the lower scoring environment but that’s not really the case in baseball.

When you watch soccer there a total of 15 - 20 minute break/ads for halftime (with the halftime show included in that) which is the perfect amount because you might need to use the bathroom, but nba has an extreme amount of ads and breaks same with nfl, but not as bad.

Think it's just a matter of attention span and the natural human reluctance to change. Many Americans need all the action to happen at a planned, quick moment, that's why there's so much down time in baseball and American football. The action in those sports comes quick and fast and then you can sit comfortably until it's time for the suspense to rise again. They also prefer sports like basketball and hockey because the action is much more frequent. A brain wired to these sports will find it difficult to stay invested in Soccer. Change is hard for many, I've even seen many people complain about there not being any ads in Soccer lol.
@supersubsoccer

Change can definitely be hard especially if you're already happy with the status quo. Rather than trying to get today's adults to change, perhaps focusing on the young generation and getting them interested now, could result in soccer being more of a norm in 20-30 years? Thoughts?
@EvieWillNotDie
@EvieWillNotDie 29 күн бұрын
@@supersubsoccer well that's the thing, we barely even have to focus such efforts. Soccer wasn't around when these older generations were growing up like it is today. Now that the sport has cemented a guaranteed place amongst other major sports in America, we really just have to let the growth naturally happen. Because it will grow, it can only grow, and I personally see it as inevitable that it'll take over. The young generation is naturally getting more and more interest in soccer at a high rate as the years pass. Fast demographic changes in the US are also heavily fueling the rise in popularity of the sport too, as well as having a knock-on affect of decreasing interest in the status-quo sports. Time will do it's thing, no need to force it more than it needs.

@@EvieWillNotDie Some great thoughts! I hope you're right. The traditional top dog sports won't go easy though. They're trying to capture the next generation just as much as soccer is. Will be interesting to see which sports the future fans gravitate towards. You think one of the traditional sports (NBA/NFL/MLB) would have to drop off for soccer to join in or could they all co-exist as a "top 4"?
@EvieWillNotDie
@EvieWillNotDie 29 күн бұрын
@@supersubsoccer soccer's growth will far outpace any major decline in those sports. They can and will coexist for many, many years, with soccer slowly overtaking them. American sports fans don't like players faking injury. It's seen as one of the most dishonorable acts possible outside of a cheap shot. Soccer rewards inferior players stalling the game out by pretending to cramp, or trying to trick the ref into giving out red cards or penalties. It also rewards weakness in flopping on the ground from the slightest touch, and penalizes fighting through tackling to stay up and keep the play going. We're at the point where players would rather fall down in the penalty area than take a high percentage shot on goal.

Americans are costumers and consumers. Football organically developed out of local culture. American sports are nothing more than a vehicle for ads. 1st down, time outs, 427th inning... Sadly money also destroys football currently. If you really want to compare football with US sports, compare it with college basketball. Every other comparison is deeply flawed. And even in basketball, there's not enough tension due to all the ad breaks (quarters, fouls, free throws, time outs).

Soccer's problem is that it's too easy for an inferior team to stop the attack of a superior team. The action in a match can slow down below an entertaining level even if a great team has all of its best players healthy. But the problem with it in America is nothing more than ignorance. Other sports, especially football and basketball now, provide the school games and adult entertainment that soccer provides in much of the rest of the world, for reasons that have nothing to do with more exciting rules or athletics. I mean, ice hockey is much faster paced than any other team sport, and how many Americans can tell you the last two Stanley Cup winners?

I recently got into baseball. (I love playing soccer). My kid started playing baseball and following his games made me understand it and how to enjoy it. You have to tune into the battle between pitcher and hitter. Follow the pitch count and how that can affect the game and how the matchups of pitcher / hitter are. So you kind of have to play attention to those little things, but even when I was a kid playing baseball I didn't understand that stuff. Soccer you can just sit back and watch and don't have to really think too much. Just hope a goal is scored and your team plays great defense. Baseball is more like watching PK shootout. Imaging 2 hours of PK shootouts. It might seem boring but the cool thing is each player gets a chance to score for their team. And you would start to really pay attention to the approach of each shooter and goalie and the matchup.
