Nearly 80% of Turkish people say Syrians should be deported, as economic woes and political campaigning fuel anger online and riots in the streets.
We spoke to residents in Istanbul about why their attitudes are changing, and Syrians about whether they still feel safe in Turkey.

Wasn't it Turkey alongside the US and Israel who were bombing Syria? So why should anyone else help. The US and Israelis just left that as your problem. Fix up!

The main problem in Syria is the Assad regime and its allies (Russia, Hezbollah, Iran, and foreign militias sponsored by Iran) bombing Syrian cities not controlled by the regime. There are other countries involved in more minor ways (it’s like there’s been some kind of decision to “bring your enemy and fight in Syria”), but the main problem is that world leaders are too afraid to stand up to Russia (which is the reason Assad is still around) to actually provide enough leverage to end the Assad regime’s reign of terror in Syria and try all those involved for war crimes. Basically Assad and Russia are doing (and has done since 2011) to Syrian cities what Russia is doing to Ukraine.

This is an occupation, not an immigration. 100 billion dollars have been spent on Syrians so far from Turkey's own budget. There were 750,000 births in 10 years. Education, health, public, social assistance.. Everything is spent from Turkey's own budget. Not to mention EU aid, the 3-5 billion euros given in a few years is not enough for anything. Unemployment, rising rents, crime rates, density in public service. Do I have to pay taxes for refugees? It's been 10 years. TEN YEARS! Yes, this is an occupation, not an immigration.

If those people spoke Turkish and looked Turkish, you would be fine with all the government expenditure. You'd just treat it like the population of your country went up by 4 percent. But since those human beings look different and speak differently, you are concerned. Aren't there Turk criminals in your country? Yes. But they don't make headlines. Because they don't look different. So pathetic that humans have still not dumped this thinking even in the 21st century.

The peoples that Turks lived with were generally Balkan Muslims and Caucasian Muslims. (Bosniaks Pomaks Circassian) That's why Turks feel close to these peoples. The Turks interacted with the Arabs because of religion, but the Turkish people did not live together with them, except in a small part of southeastern Anatolia. Arabs consist of polygamous and multi-child families. Turks are monogamous. On the other hand, the reforms made by Great Atatürk modernized Turkey, but there was no such reform in the Arabs. In the 1st World War, the Arabs rebelled against the Turks.

It's really simple to understand this issue. Turkish people known as their hospitality, they serve you half of their food, water, Hause. They give you free hospital and medicines, free education. You are always welcome and it doesn't matter where you from. But if you wanna shit on the carpet in the middle of the living room, you are done mate. We are neither racists nor haters. We are nationalists. If you wanna stay, stay. No pressure and you are always welcome. But you have to always remember. This is our country that we fought to earn.

Naaah not quite. They’re known for scamming you in a taxi as soon as you land in the airport. They’re known for insulting you in their own language because they’re too cowardly to say anything in a language a tourist understands. They’re known for insecurity, jealousy, and throwing fits of rage because of some undeveloped brain tissue of some sort. They’re known for an empire that has COMPLETELY appropriated Arabic language, culture, and most importantly religion. They’re known for stealing Greek lands and Syrian Arabic lands (hatay is a good example). Last but not least, they’re known for being the current Mongolian occupiers of Anatolia

In our country, we have temporary protection status, not refugee / immigrant status. It is therefore not legislated through universal legislation that applies to a refugee or an immigrant. All of them came here on the condition that they return to their country after the end of the civil war. The war is long gone, but these people still live with us in our country. In addition, Mr. Assad has declared an amnesty every year, with the exception of 2017, since 2011 when the conflict began in their country. In short, the war is now over and there is no reason why they should not return. It's been 11 years and that's really enough. We've spent more than $100 billion in total from our own treasury in 11 years, which makes the current recession even worse. As usual the EU is behaving hypocritically, so how much did they give them, 7-8 billion euros? )) Imagine taking care of nearly 8 million Syrians for years, don't you think 7-8 billion euros is a ridiculous amount? In addition, they do not transfer these funds directly to the Central Bank of the Republic of Turkey, but to their own associations and so-called "integration" projects. At the same time, they are propaganda for the Europeans and the Syrians here by saying, "We cater to all the needs of the Syrians." That's why we hear silly and funny arguments like "Europe gives you money for us, we don't owe you anything" or "If we're not here, you'll go bankrupt economically, we don't need you, you need us" when we talk to Syrians here. We, the Turkish youth, are tired of the hypocritical EU policies. We are tired of the EU trying to lecture us on humanity while people trying to enter Europe are drowning in the Mediterranean. We are tired of EU/US funded newspapers, journalists and left libertarians calling us fascists. We are not fascists. We do not see these people as inferior to us. We are just realistic. We act rationally. While you weren't able to integrate about 100,000 well-selected people (Stockholm, April 28), you would expect us to integrate millions who were not well-selected. This is unrealistic and unsustainable. These people must return to where they belong in peace as our friends. For them and for all of us. I don't even want to talk about Afghans and Pakistanis because there is no war in their country and they are illegal. I will come to this subject later, but I will not do justice if I do not make the following criticism: the government, which is incapable of protecting our borders, is causing it. They cross our borders literally "on foot". Most of them are not registered. So we don't know if they are terrorists, criminals, deviants or not. In short, we can no longer comfortably walk our streets. Many of these people suffer from PTSD because they went through a civil war. Our view of the world is completely different from these people. Our culture is very different from these people. Likewise, some of those, unfortunately, do not respect our culture. Keep in mind that Syrians are an Arab nation. They have their own community, their own news feed, their own standards. In general, we cannot incorporate these people. And most of them don't want to. Let's look at this issue from a different perspective: Our demographics are intentionally altered. We know that if we do not overcome this conflict, Turkey will also experience what happened to Syria. Salafism is on the rise in Turkey. Salafi movements are also very common among Syrians. Similarly, we see similar Salafi movements among Afghans and Bakees. Please go and watch their videos titled “Caliphate Established in Turkey in 2023” which has garnered millions of views on social media.

A Turk here. Let me explain the situation for you guys. The hatred is caused because of Erdogan. We Turks helped our muslim brothers syrians for years a lot. Me and my family personally sent many clothes to syrians. However, in recent years Erdogan exceeded the limit and he made many things easy for syrians to get more votes for instance; 1-he gave citizenship to syrians easily. All syrians who go to Turkish universities can take Turkish citizenship 2- He let syrians make business without taxes 3- He gave houses to syrians for free 4- Fleeing the war is a big disgrace for Turkish people so whoever flees war can not be loved by the Turks as tradition. And We Turks think that we are citizenship of this country , we do everything for Turkey but why we can't take advantages of these opportunities. That is why racism and hatred increased a lot and syrians did horrible things. But The main reason of this hatred is erdogan not syrian themselves. Erdogan thinks he helps syrians but what all he did is to make angry the Turks and get more votes

Regardless, we have to learn from the Muslim Brotherhood-Morsi & Erdogan about this issue because the unification of the ummah is very important. But, because of the Zionist & Western puppets, they are deliberately provoking us & Islam. And now, Muslims vs Muslims could be an issue of Supremacy through (via) Critical Race Theory. As a non Muslim Turkish, I really feel for Syrians who had to leave their homes because of the civil war and IS. I hope each and every one of them can have better life standards and experience no racism anywhere they go. Also, I believe that hosting them here in Türkiye's totally natural as a border country whose citizens take pride in being most hospitable. HOWEVER, I believe Türkiye's hosting them in much more numbers than it should given the economic and social circumstances here. I believe Türkiye, other related countries and EU have to cooperate more in order to ensure peace in Syria and host the refugees in a balanced and just way. I'm deeply concerned that individual acts of violence are starting to take place between Syrian/Syrian and Syrian/Turkish individuals as a result of wrong politics. Crime can't be attributed to any ethnic group, it has much more relations with economic and social status obviously. However, expecting the Turkish society with already low economic status and extremely high patriotism to behave like angels after experiencing firsthand or hear some condemned behaviours by ''guests'' would be unrealistic.

Turkish here. I have a problem with France’s double standard against Turkiye. I remember very clearly, at the start of 2000’s, Turkiye had laws forbidding burqa or hijab or whatever the fuck it is ( the completely closed type of dress for islamic women) At those years, France was the leading country in E.U, telling Turkiye that “people are free to wear whatever they like, there should be freedom of religion, clothes” bla bla bla. You guys were in full support of Erdogan. Especially France by far. Fast forward to 20 years later, you French forbid hijabi islamic dresses in your streets, even added a fine. Three or five years ago, no one thought much about immigrants. The breaking point was Erdoğan's immigration policy. Erdogan cannot lead Turkey to the Islamic regime he dreams of. The Turkish nation will not allow this. In response, Erdogan began to change Turkey's demographic structure. It quickly began to make millions of Syrians Turkish citizens. When this was realized, the names and surnames of the Arabs who received citizenship began to be hastily changed. In this way, he aimed to reach the sharia-supporting Islamist public opinion he dreamed of and to reach millions of votes instead of the votes he lost. The worst part is; Syrians are doing the stupidest thing they can do. They began to take sides in Turkey's political issues. As if this wasn't enough, they even started giving lectures to Turks about Erdogan and religion. All this was enough to drive the Turks crazy.

@Pacem321

Classic example of one group (in this case the % of Turks who are xenophobic) scapegoating another, less powerful group (Syrian refugees). Despite popular false claims that the war in Syria is “over”, it is first of all: 1) not over, as Assad and his allies Russia, Hezbollah, and various militias are still bombing and destroying non-regime controlled areas. 2) even if it were over, the dictatorial Assad regime is still in power, so making Syrians return would be dangerous because this regime is known to target Syrians who were/have been associated with the opposition through torture, kidnapping, or death via aerial bombardment of civilian targets with the help of the Russian army, just like it does in Ukraine. That said, Turkey has accepted a large number of Syrian refugees and the rest of the world should absolutely follow their example, especially other Arab countries, but I’m not surprised that other Arab countries haven’t done more to help because they are dictatorships themselves and that’s probably why they’re not keen on accepting democratically-minded people who fled their country oui of fear of being targeted by their own dictatorship. The ideal is to END the Assad regime, try him and his collaborators for war crimes, and have UN-monitored democratic elections and peacekeepers in Syria so that the people can live without the constant threat of a horrific death by Assad’s torture machine. In order for that to happen, governments people around the world need to pressure the UN to charge Assad with war crimes and ensure free elections just like the ones you’re lucky to have in Turkey. Syrians WANT to go back home, but nobody wants to live in dread and constant terror. And for those trying to say that Syrians are somehow subhuman or “less than”: consider that the Ottoman Empire violently occupied Syria for hundreds of years. Welcoming Syrians is the least Turkey can do given this history. Also, for those in the comments saying things like “stay strong Turks (against what? Refugees trying to live a normal life? Lol) from XYZ random country” : consider that people from your nationality are viewed with the same kind of disdain in the West as you view Syrians, and consider that countless citizens of your country, which is not at war, have fled to the West. Add to that the fact that EVERY population has bad apples, criminals, or people with mental illnesses, but this is especially common in those who have experienced trauma like war for example. Turkey has a ton of Turkish criminals, but they don’t make headlines because that wouldn’t serve the right-wing scapegoating agenda against refugees. Do you like it if people in the West tell you to go back to your country? Do you like it when they judge your whole group as being criminals stealing the jobs of the locals? No? Then learn to treat others the way you want to be treated.

To be honest, the country should implement harsh laws, with the threat of deportation. It should control the job market to prevent exploitation, and the turkish workforce suffering. There should be a mandatory registration into language courses, and an incentive to integrate. Of course there are always bad representatives of people, and the syrians have their bad representatives whom should be held accountable and made an example out of. But this is not the only place where anti-Syrian sentiment exists, places like Canada, Germany etc. have all had something to say already, where there is smoke, there is fire.

“Made an example out of”? So should Turks who are criminals also be made an example of? Anyone who commits a crime should be punished period. However there doesn’t need to be examples as if u need to threaten them or warn, as if they’re all this way. Secondly learning a new language isn’t easy, they should be taught but that shouldn’t be what determines them having citizenship. They come in, they work, and pay their taxes as citizens to the Turkish govt. what other kind of integration do they need to do? And finally the idea that “where there’s smoke there’s fire” let’s be very clear, the western countries started, and supported this war since day 1. They were determined to overthrow the Syrian govt without any care of what could happen to the people. The Syrians left because they have no other choice the Europeans welcomed them and they came in willing to integrate and become legal citizens. The idea that there was fire mainly came from their own racist views about the East, that existed long before the war began. Yes when there’s a large number of refugees there’s an issue in the economy but that’s what happens when u cause the refugee crisis in the first place.

@@mohammadelder1897 First of all your response is full of assumptions. Made an example out of in the way that would only affect a refugee in turkey, such as deportation, that was mentioned because you can't really deport a turk out of turkey for example. I never said learning the language should determine citizenship, I say it because it is ultimately to the benefit of the refugees themselves rather than the state or its natives. "They come in, work, and pay their taxes" I'm sure a lot are, but I also live in the real world, and if you want to be an idealist, then theres no point having the conversation. I speak from experience living in country where a large chunk of the syrian refugee population chooses to have 7, 8 or 9 kids just because they get financial support for each. Another large chunk decides to illegally run businesses from home or off the books, to avoid taxation, inspections, etc. If you work in a country like that, where you have spent years of your life trying to open up a business, which now is barely surviving because taxes are eating into your margins for making a living, and you see people who have in couple of months started to compete selling the same product you do, with no licensing, no taxation, and no inspections then there is something wrong there. I always state this point when right wing westerners talk about refugees, that the west's involvment in syria, lybia, and iraq has destoyed the country, and ruined a society and a culture, and that they will pay the price for it one way or another. However to be consistent you must admit that the large number of refugess must be acting in a way to hurt the country if you are going to take the position of "They deserve it for supporting the war since day 1" - Where there is smoke there is fire statement was born out of a first hand experience not a theorized opinion.

@vildan erdoğan I agree, especially since the option of going back is open. There has been times from the past were refugees just couldnt go back due to occupation. Palestinians being an example, their villages, cities and towns were taken, destroyed, and converted to jewish settelments. The equation with the syrian tragedy is a little different, there was no external occupying force, their lands are still there, their towns need to be rebuilt, it is ultimately their responsibility. To be frank though, that wouldn't be an easy life like it is in europe or turkey, and that is the truth. They are just like all other people, theyre looking for a better, easier life, even though in principle it is wrong. I also want to say one more thing, because it is repeated a lot, "Turks dont like arabs" i think that is such a pitiful excuse because you can easily say "Arabs dont like turks" i mean afterall we were the ones who held hands with the west to get rid of the ottomans.. i think even if a bit of that exists for turks or arabs it never gets in the way of being good and respectful and helpful.. it is only an excuse.

What people don't get is that there are criminals in every ethnicity. Turk, Syrian, Pakistani, French etc. Just because people are refugees doesn't mean they will all be innocent and not everyone who isn't a refugee is innocent either. It is how you deal with the criminal elements that makes a difference. Problem is people start blaming a whole race or religion for the sins of a few.

Problem is why the world even most richest arabic countries such Saudi and uae doesnt help their arab brothers but why we always have help them to keep them out of EU. First we were really hospitable. But we dont have any respect for the people who dont integrate themselves. If they dont learn culture and rules or our language they should withstand the consequences. Turks are not the people you can play with. You should show 100 percent respect to survive in this country. You should commit yourself to learn language culture ethics and turkish norms. Turks really has unwritten rules in the society beside judicial system. If you dont comply with you get hunted and lynched by society.

As A Turkish Person I dont hate Arabs but I hate hundred and thousands refugees in my hometown. I mean it doesn't matter they are arab or Scandinavian . Problem is starting with huge numbers of refugees. The population of my city was 1 million. There are 350 thousand syrian refugees. The city is very crowded. Every park is full. All malls are full. Roads always full with cars. You cant find any home for living. You cant taste cultural events because of over crowded areas. Walking in night hours is scary because of thiefs. In summary, I can no longer breathe in the city I live in. And the war started 10 years ago. Esad has been recalling refugees for 2 years. I dont blame them for leaving their country. But I think they should restore their country. That's enough.

As a Palestinian Arab I understand. It’s very hard and more Arab countries should’ve helped but please don’t think all Arabs want to cause problems. I’m not a refugee I’m not from a country like Syria. But now I’m scared to be a tourist in turkey because I’m Arab. I understand that it’s hard. I’m sorry refugees have misbehaved. I don’t deny that some refugees have done these things so I understand that it’s hard.

@@tarekj5951 As I said I don't hate arabs. If there were millions of Norwegian refugees in the country instead of Syrians, everyone would hate Norwegians. Turkey is already a crowded country on its own. It is frustrating that people who have destroyed their own country come to Turkey. Because they don't want to be integrated into the culture here. They want to continue the same behavior in Turkey that has destroyed their own country. And this is make me angry because I don't want to lose my country.
