There were several automatic 40mm grenade launcher designs in the 1960's, many were mounted on helicopters. The XM174E3 was the direct predecessor of the Mk 19. The Mk 18 grenade launcher was a hand cranked automatic launcher. The Soviet AGS-17 and AGS-30 were copied from the American concept.

@@MrDDiRusso Soviet already had an automatic grenade launcher system (Taubin) in trial in early 1940s, but for many reasons, it was not adopted. The success of USA's grenade launchers systems revived the concept for the Soviet and resulted in ags-17 and its successors.
