@@asparadog do they? Considering how popular blackcurrant is here in the UK, I’m surprised. Saying that, they’re a definitely a waryness of trying wild berries that you’re not 100% sure of. At the end of summer I like to take my sons to pick blackberries (they grow all over the place where I live, you could live on them there’s that much), and when I grew up I used to go on walks with my step dad who would teach me about elderberries and things like that, so maybe I’m just one of the lucky few who know a tiny bit more.

Explains a lot about why my couple of bushes often loose the whole crop in a day if we have a heavy rainstorm or high wind when they are ripe. I really need to check them more often and pick when they are ripe. With a real cold winter, some snow and lots of frosts, I guess I might have a good crop this year :)

In the U. S. A. , one can barely get blackcurrant drinks or flavourings. The plants are illegal to grow in much of North America because they’re thought a host for a disease of some pines, Pinus strobus. (They probably aren’t as important a host as various native relatives.) The big drink flavor in the U. S. A. is Concord grape - not sold as a table grape usually.

Blackcurrants are really easy to grow in your garden in North England - I would personally say the reason you don't find blackcurrants in the supermarket is they taste awful without a lot of sugar. They taste exactly like Ribena if you add the exact weight of the berries in sugar to them and boil it in a pan.

It used to be illegal across the entire US, but now it's per state, so commercial growers do exist in some places. But because the American palate isn't used to blackcurrant, there isn't much of a market.

Not sure about the commercial product, but if you actually juice (note: did it with a heat-based juicer) them they're very close, just not as refreshing as the berries. You'd just usually dilute them so they end up less intense than the berry, though the berries aren't so intense that you couldn't eat them on their own. The citric acid, sugar and grape skins may be changing it a bit, but other than making it a bit more sour and less intense it probably won't mess with it too much and since it only has the amount of concentrate (how concentrated? Who knows) it may be more or less strong, but if you try it on it's own and adjust until it's intense but pleasant it'd probably as close as you can get without finding yourself some fresh ones. Which, well, they're actually fairly easy to grow in the right climates.

Sorry, so people are growing a crop that has a bad shelf life, but they're growing a lot of it, so a big corporation turns it into a sugary concentrate that people then drink for little-to-no nutritional value? Sure. I guess that's not as bad as other things.
