Cashews are a member of the same family as poison ivy, Anacardiaceae. Like poison ivy and many other members of the family, part of the cashew plant contains an oily chemical called urushiol, which is a strong irritant for most people and can even be fatal for some if ingested.

I visited a cashew processing facility in Malawi some years back. I was not allowed to take photos or film. The workers wrapped their hands in plastic bags and used old nails to peel the cashews. Most of the worker's fingers were eaten away by the oils after years of peeling them. They all sat on the floor singing together while they worked.

I have wondered the same thing. Especially when I saw a documentary about a tribe that had no contact with the outside world. They had developed a 4 or 5 step method including burying the plant for an extended time before it was edible. They didn't have enough people in the tribe going back 100 or more years to test every possible combination of steps and possible steps. Nobody in the documentary asked them how they discovered the process.

In Puerto Rico, as a teen, I ate this all the time! My friends and I used to pick this fruit straight out from the tree. In P.R the fruit's called "Pajuil", Pajuiles in plural. We would make a fire and toss the seeds, AKA cashews into the flame, to roast them. Then we'd crack them open and eat the cashew... never caught any dangerous rash. btw, I only found out these were cashews in my adult life after trying to find the fruit here in NY. 😂 The Pajuil is very juicy and sweet, but it prunes and dries up your lips, while you're eating it and it will stain your clothing if you let it drip on it. This video really took me back to my youth. 👍🏻

We have one growing in our backyard. It smells good when it bears fruit. The cashew apple is indeed very delicate. It starts out green then turns mostly bright yellow and slightly reddish when it ripens. The seed grows ahead of the fruit. It's the only thing I know that has a seed growing outside of it's fruit. It's slightly oily to the touch. Bees abound around the fruit bunch. Cashew apple is sweet and slightly tarty. It can be dipped in either salt, or vinegar, or soy sauce to remove the tarty aftertaste When consumed and is not ripe enough you will not appreciate the taste. The fruit is actually more enjoyable than the nut. The tree grows mostly in the tropics.

Nuts are seeds that are rich in lipids but the pure in natura form. Those seeds contain fatty acids that are essential to the body development. And its very good for the so called anti age process. The consumption of those grants the non absortion of free radicals that oxides our bodies, and that is do present in the food industries. What Im sayin is that a large variety of seeds that grows in pods, fruity shells, or hard shells can be considered a nut, and so very good for you. Eat nuts. Brazil sends hello

Macadamia nuts are even more expensive and I read that that's because they need to be harvested from Elephant dung - They can only be eaten after going through an elephant! The same is true of the most expensive coffee beans in the world too but they must have passed through the digestive tract of a Thai Elephant or an Indonesian civet cat to get that expensive. I prefer cashew nuts and normal coffee!
@TruthWillFreeYou
@TruthWillFreeYou 5 жыл бұрын
@@stethacanthus7861 What you said about Macadamia nuts isn't true. They are safe to eat raw or roasted. We grow these where I live. They are harvested from a tree "after they fall to the ground" and then usually dried/baked/dried for best flavor. They are toxic to dogs though so keep them away from your K9 companions. www.wikihow.com/Harvest-Macadamia-Nuts en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Macadamia There may be a species that requires special care to harvest, but the above method is how nearly all of the 160,000 tonnes the world has produced were harvested. That figure was accurate as of 2015 according to Wikipedia.

ok ok.. interesting information.. but it only makes me wonder.. who first decided that it'd be a smart idea to pick the tag-nut of a bum-shaped fruit and eat it? if it were poisonous, and fatal to consume, which manic Jonny figured it out that you must first roast the butt nut before ingesting it? Did the shit-shew miraculously fall from a bum-fruit directly into a scorching hot fire, lightly toasting it, before ricocheting off a piece of firewood, flying directly into the mouth of a hunter-gatherer nestled around the cosey campfire on a cold winters day? Did the fellow hunter-gathers, having witnessed this uncanny occurance first hand first applaud in genuine amazement, (thus, inventing applause) before asking for a thumbs up (thus inventing the thumbs up) to determine what the toasty and moreish flavour of the newly discovered hangle-dangle fruit scored out of 10? To me, this is about as stupid as roasting and eating the haemorrhoid addled kidney stones of a puffer fish because "roasting them brings out a succulent fishy flavour." but ehh.. cashews are fucken dope. especially salted ones. I'm glad weird shit like this became food. I wonder what else we ain't eating or utilising as medicine on this Earth that we could...

You're looking at things from the point of view of modern society in a place where food is plentiful and you can pick and choose, i'd imagine a lot of things are trial and error and cultivation over the last several thousand years, people would have died eating things and had to try different things so that they had a food source. A good example is the banana, bananas were originally full of massive pips/seeds and poisonous, what you eat today was created by man they were grown sterile and now form an actual food source.

So if the juice is made do they extract the component giving the numb feeling, or is it some kind of local delicacy and the feeling is accepted for the sake of the taste?

Be careful though because the juice can stain your clothes. Also the fruit has a thready texture when bitten and a tangy after taste that scratches your throat that's all. Now the seed, you again have to wait till the fruit is ripe. By that time the seed goes from green and softish to brown and hard. All you need to do is twist the seed a couple of times and it pops of the fruit. You then gather them and put them out in the hot sun to dry for a couple of days just to dry them out a bit. After they have dried make a fire, put them into a container with holes that can withstand heat and roast them till there turn black. Take them off the heat let cool and the shells are easy to crack. Just don't hit them too hard. Make sure you time them because you can't over cook or under cook them. If you under cook you can always bake them in the oven till there are done which brings me to another method. Some people just cut open the shells, take out the nuts and pop them in the oven. But there is a sticky substance the nuts secretes when raw that IS POISONOUS so caution should be exercised when handling them.

Ladies in India have a pile of cold wood ash to dip their fingertips into. This prevents the oil touching their skin; if the oil touches the skin, ten days later it will turn black and peel off. The cashews are then roasted to collect the oil and the oil is used to paint onto the exterior of brickwork to make it waterproof. The cashew oil is also used in the manufacture of brake fluid.

Not only is the skin fragile, but apparently it ripens so fast it may be unripe in one end and overripe in the other end of the fruit at the same time. It goes from hard and unripe to overripe and dissolving within hours apparently. I tasted Cashew fruit once in The Gambia, and I think it tasted horrible. It was sickeningly sweet, a flavour somewhat similar to overripe tropical fruit of some kind (it may have been slightly overripe actually) but most disturbingly it gave a dry, irritating sensation in my entire mouth similar to chewing grape seeds or very unripe apples. I actually didn't really feel well some time afterwards.so maybe I don't tolerate it very well anyway...

We had a lot in the garden in Brazil. The reason is very simple. To take the nut from inside that shell, you need to burn it, and we used to do that outside with coal and fire, and it means a lot of work. We used to do that a lot when we were kids, because grandma would prepare delicious "paçoca" with that. 🤗😋 How I miss that! I can smell it burning right now. If they had to sell with shells, you would have the same problem to open it, besides too much work it's also dangerous. Visit Brazil and see how people do that. It's delicious and smells fantastic! 😍💗💖

Another key reason why you don't see the shells is because they are a product in their own right as the source of useful precursor chemicals: "Cashew nutshell liquid (CNSL) or cashew shell oil (CAS registry number 8007-24-7) is a natural resin with a yellowish sheen found in the honeycomb structure of the cashew nutshell, and is a byproduct of processing cashew nuts. It is a raw material of multiple uses in developing drugs, antioxidants, fungicides, and biomaterials.[17] It is used in tropical folk medicine and for antitermite treatment of timber.[29] Its composition varies depending on how it is processed." There's more about it in the Wiki: en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cashew

I have cashew trees in our backyard.There are actually different varieties. The red fruit is much more juicier and sweeter than the yellow types. It has very strong caustic taste and you may feel like your throat is choking unless it is fully ripe. One more thing to look out for is the oil in the nut casing. That stuff will burn your skin, i mean literally. If the oil comes in contact with bare skin blisters will form. So before opening the case you should roast it in fire and use rubber gloves.

I love cashews. Here is a show tip: What percentage of crude oil goes into making fuel, from lowly bunker fuel to high octane motor fuels. verses other products such as LPG/Propane, Plastics asphalt and the like... don't forget the aromatics that come off the top of the stack. Are there any consumable petrochemicals like Petroleum jelly? (yes some places use it to fry foods in) ACK
@UpcycleElectronics
@UpcycleElectronics 7 жыл бұрын
Craig Nehring The Cracking process is interestingly geeky, most crude oil can be converted into the smaller hydrocarbons. A lot of the deciding factors are determined by where the oil is sourced from. For instance, the east coast of the US has a paraffin base where the west coast is more benzine base. They get refined differently. The market demand and value of the end products are also a big factor in how many refinement stages the product will go through. I think the most informative information would be about oil would be just how long it takes for oil to go from wells, to refinery, to end products, and just how much storage and reserve is involved at each step. There is no excuse for gasoline prices to immediately change the moment any little issue in the chain hits the news. The industry has far too much momentum and reserve for these types of costs.

I live in Brazil... And yes you can find cashew fruit in their raw state. I really appreciate the fruit more than the seeds in general... They are sweet and very tasty 😊

Frying is at a higher temperature than boiling. You can boil things in oil, where things don't get crispy.

Frying only has a thin layer of oil in a pan. When something is boiled in oil, it is submerged completely (like French fries).

It's stuff like this that makes me wonder: Who the hell was the first person to decide to eat a cashew (they don't look particularly appetizing prior to shelling), did they have a reaction to the oils, and, if so, how the hell did it *still* catch on as a thing people should grow, harvest and eat??

I grew up in Nicaragua, my mother used to bring fresh marañones from the market, she would roast them up and we would the seed (cashew) it was one of the most delicious things I had ever tried. One time I bit into the raw seed and I remember it felt like my whole face and chest was on fire, it's not something that happens gradually, the burn ( if you can even call it that ) happened immediately, it was like a mixture of burn and sting and itch, I remember trying to scrape my tongue off with my nails lol all it took was me sinking my teeth into the seed to regret my entire existence 😬

I knew cashews were slightly to moderately toxic when raw and that their shell casings also contained this toxin, but I wasn't aware that you could actually eat cashew fruit or that they were called cashew apples. Very interesting. Now I want to taste one.

NobodyNowhereKnowhow I eat a lot of "cashew fruit", then burn the nut without open the shell. The fire produced from the shell is nice (it's like a flare of jet engine). Once the flare is gone, imediately we take the nut from the fire. Timing is very important, if we don't take the nut right after the flare gone, the nut will turn into black carbon😂. The "shell oil" could be used for "Tattoeing", it's a "burning/itching" type of sensation.

I ate cashew fruit growing up. Another one I really enjoyed is almond fruit. Sadly in the western world, we only get cashew nuts and almond nuts!

+jana catudan sweet (note: eat when turn to reddish color, don't eat the yellowish color). It's really juicy yet "fiber" type of fruit. Roughly 75%-80% is water. If you are not used to it, your throat will have some kind of irritation. Overall, it's good to have it at hot day. By the way, we eat the leaf ("offshot leaf").

***** Honestly, it's hard to describe. The meat of Cashew is very soft and juicy with a unique taste, while almond fruit has very little meat. Oh my.. I love almond fruits that are red on the inside. I would just throw the whole thing in my mouth and chew and suck it dry!! Then, I'll spit it out and crack the shell with a stone to reveal the NUT!!!

In Central America, particularly in El Salvador. We eat the fruit quite often. Then we take the shell & roasted over an open fire. Then we eat the cashews. Of course after it's cool down a bit. They're even tastier soon after being roasted. The trees were quite common in most back yards back in the mid to late 70s when I lived in El Salvador.

I guess, a peanut is basically like a bean (legume) and they are (oddly enough) considered as fruits. #WikipediaFTW

Recently while in Phuket, Thailand, where cashews are widely grown and sold, I came across a new byproduct of the preparation of the raw material for sale to consumers: the pulp of the fruit which the nut hangs from on the tree. The raw pulp is processed into a product referred to on the commercial label as "cashew (apple) juice". The product produced by Methee Phuket Co. calls for a dilution with water as the content is a concentrate of the processed pulp. A unique flavor.
