In this video:
Many hotels offer guests a free breakfast consisting of muffin, coffee, cereal and milk, toast, juice, bagel, and, at some, even scrambled eggs and make-your-own waffles. Born in the Gilded Age, today’s continental breakfasts reflect the West’s transition from a mostly agrarian culture to an industrial (and today, service) society. Luckily, however, some of us have not forgotten our culinary past.

Continental breakfasts vary in hotels across America. Cheap places get away with coffee, one fruit juice and a bread item (e.g. toast or pastry). They typically have condiments too. The nicer ones can have fresh fruit, bagels, cereal, milk, cheese, cream cheese, muffins and several juice options.

When I was seven I stayed at the Essex House in New York for a few days and their food was very nice. But when you're a little kid they can hand you a Pop Tart and you'd be happy. Despite being poor I don't think I've ever been in a cheap hotel because I was lucky enough to have people take me places when I was a kid.

Just for the record, I was born in 1947 and I grew up eating the breakfast you describe as late 19th, early 20th century. Of course, I was a farm boy, and we ate three solid meals a day except on Sunday, when my Hampshire born Mum made a classic joint and three veg Sunday dinner followed by a late, light supper.

Where I worked, an average continental was coffee, pastries, fruit, juice. A "deluxe continental" added bagel/bread with toaster and then yogurt. If you wanted meat, eggs...etc...then we really didn't call it continental...it was more of a "full breakfast". If you wanted to pay more, then u got a cook to cook you an omelette or waffle onsite. At least this is what one could order in a banquet setting, but many hotels are going with free breakfasts with various degrees in quality....mainly to stay competitive.

The hotel I stay in every November when I'm on vacation (Best Western Merry Manor Inn in Portland, Maine) includes a free breakfast buffet with the room. Bacon, sausage, homefries, pancakes, "make your own waffles", scrambled eggs, toast, muffins, bagels, cereal, pretty much everything you'd expect and all you want of it. It's open to the public and always busy.

It's really nice that this is a consistent thing found in hotels around the world, so breakfast can be a meal that's easy to handle. And then people can experiment with their lunches/dinners (from local cuisine) and look for something that interests them. Also a good way to not completely balloon in weight when on vacation.

It's funny how the term continental breakfast can vary so widely in line with the quality of the hotel. Continental breakfast at a two-star hotel means stale pastries (danish and muffins typically) and cheap coffee. But in high-end (five-star) places it is fresh croissants, bagels, waffles, gourmet coffee, hot eggs, bacon ad sausage, fresh fruits all sorts of other items.

When I lived and worked in San Francisco for two Summers while in college, I was at a residence club, basically a hotel with breakfast and dinner on weekdays only. They also changed the sheets and towels weekly. Toilet and sink in the room, shower down the hall. I gathered that it was intended for working men and women, who would be at their job at lunch time and could fend for themselves on the weekend. But a few elderly retirees subsisted there as well. Sadly, I no longer recall what the meals were like, but I returned for the second Summer, so there is that.

ian, i CAN correct you! i like correcting people. i associate rocky mountain oysters with colorado, which the rockies pass through. although i fully admit any so called "rocky mountain oysters" i get here in Michigan would likely have come from east of the Mississippi. busi, another part of the problem is, at least in my tiny world, lots of these organs have developed reputations. liver for instance i have grown to associate with 2 things; gout and old people. eating hearts has become associated with devil warship and other "black magic" type lunacy. even with the decline of religion, the US is still among the most religious nations on the planet. and kidneys... there aint much to say here, they just dont sound appetizing. no marketing short of completely renaming them will bring them into favor anytime soon, unless mcliver'n'onions turns out to be a hit anywhere outside of southern florida.

before 1500 (so before tomatoes were introduced in europe) people rarely had breakfast. they had dinner (lunch) at 11 AM anyway so they just got up and went to work without eating anything. eating in the morning was for travellers and sick people. if they did have some kind of breakfast, it wasn't documented at the time. they most likely ate leftovers from the last meal, or just bread.

As a lad on a Midwestern farm in the 1950s my breakfast was much as you described for the early 1800s, minus the fish. After I left home, when I visited, my Mum still expected me to eat that sort of breakfast. I would gently remind her that I hadn't already put in an hours work doing chores, and I wouldn't be working in the fields all day. Of course, Mum was English, so there were also echoes of the full English reverberating!

glad to know my choice in 'toast' is not just some weird thing I only created out of frustration. I often fry my bread when I make eggs just because everyone kept putting the butter back in the fridge even though I bought a covered butter dish so they can leave it out with out it getting nasty. but they persisted on this matter, even going as far as to take the butter out of the dish and put it in the fridge. Thus when ever I went to have buttered toast the stick of butter was always too hard to properly put on my toast and I would wind up with a sad not buttery enough mauled piece of crunchy bread. So one day I just said 'fuck it' and just fried my bread, it was just if not more buttery then I wanted and had a nice texture, My family give me weird looks for it (even though I am pretty sure Texas toast it made in a similar fashion and that is not weird) but now I can just be all fancy and go 'this is how toast is done in England.' even though I have never been outside of the U.S. my entire life, and I found this out via a random TIFO video that I would not have watched if it wasn't for the auto play feature. but they don't have to know that.

The first two "Continental Breakfast"s I ever had were only coffee and glazed donuts. So, I thought that's all it was for a long time. I've been so impressed by anything beyond this that I actually used to compliment most hotels for having more on the menu no matter how poor in quality it was. I've finally got a good idea of what this means and have stopped wasting ink praising a fair deal that I've paid for.

In Europe there is a more regimented time for meals. Before about eleven all that is available is pastries, bread, maybe cold cuts along with butter and jam. A fresh Parisian croissant is beyond amazing but it makes for a poor breakfast. Between noon and seven or so you only have a snack or petit dejeuner or small meal which is breakfast again. There are fast food and sometimes on the road you can find a truck stop or equivalent serving meals at other times. The English breakfast is great, at least by my bourgeois American standards.

I've hated the Continental Breakfast since I was a child waking up and being massively disappointed at the cheap-arse slice of toast, jam, and OJ provided by the hotels/motels where we were staying, even in Singapore. Eventually I ended up in England, my mind blown by the "Full English" I was provided with the cost of my room. Best... Breakfast... EVER.

Nowadays, "continental breakfast" tends to mean coffee, juice, donuts, and maybe milk and cold cereal. Especially at the cheaper hotels. Of course, considering the number of people that tend to skip breakfast altogether, I suppose that's a pretty big meal!

since the full English breakfast is so hearty, are the rest of their meals during the day lighter?
