Competition is necessary, but safeguard is a must, if private player comes and overpowers the system then eventually due to less revenue and losses the mandis would close and price discovery through MSP would stop and again they would be in the situation of mercy of private players

@@dvnr12 protectionism may make us less competitive against the world. Look at the dairy sector of India for example. ITC, a private player competes with Amul and they both compete with local milk vendors as well. Customer is the real king and the industry today generates more revenue than wheat and rice combined. If we don't trust in our own people's strength, then who are we standing for. Our farmers can deliver a lot more, provided they get access to the right resources and opportunities just like our cattle farmers got. The question really is, are we gonna help them. Private sector means anybody who isn't in the government, which includes most of us. It's gonna be upto the smart minds of India to take this further. Government can only provide support, we have to make a better India.

@@abhinavabhi9878 no problem from the private sector investing in agriculture sector but the main reason is to ensure a minimum price for them so that they have an assurance for their crop or else they would again be in a debt trap, creating a co operative is a great idea but their are very less cases of its success like amul, if some co operative society is developed by farmers it would bring a complete revolution but the success of this idea is meagre, if we could ensure a minimum price for crops then their is a better option for crop diversification according to the needs of the society not just only 2 crops in excess, but this all needs a great political and ground working will, which at present is very difficult

Most of the farmers don't know this. The government has to educate farmers on how to sell crops. But they still rely on local traders to sell their crops. These local traders exploit farmers. More mandis should be set up and these mandis should be made known to the farmers.

@@TK-ij1re For this scheme to work as intended, farmers would have to find out prices of their produce in different markets, rules of that market, etc etc. I don't know much about mandi systems but it seems that if there is no dedicated portal for them, they wouldn't be able to take full advantage of the new system as many farmers are not so much into gathering information from the internet.

Okay i am sorry for calling you dumbass first. I like your humility though. See farmers are given loan on various basis for crops for land for equipments electricity etc. But due the uncertainty in this sector most of the times they fail to repay the loan. The produce is procured from them at a much less amount leaving no profit to repay the loan. And this debt keeps them in thus vicious cycle of indebtedness. It's not that they don't want to repay the loan but it's because they are not able to. And the bank still has the collateral so they pretty much are helpless. If you wish to know more details then pls tell me.

However, loan remittance is kind of a knee jerk solution. In that case corporatisation of farmlands may be a boon in disguise. Corporates can handle the exorbitant finances as they easily do for all their assets. I think it's not that bad an idea. I can understand why punjab Haryana will be unhappy as they used to feed on the profits made by the state government on Mandi's. I'd suggest watch the Print's take on the matter. Yes we don't live in an ideal world and corporates can easily exploit the farmers. However, more stricter guidelines can be made to strengthen the ordinances rather than perpetuating the same system. Just a thought.
