On todays episode our hero journeys into the depths of professional esports while trying to answer one of life's most difficult questions, just why are there SO many gay people in the fighting game community? Through extensive research, personal experience, and one too many white monsters, our hero finally completes this exhausting task, bringing only the most important information back with them. From CSGO, to Guilty Gear, the Overwatch League, to Super Smash Bros. Melee, they left no stone unturned, and no person left behind in this quest benefitting all of mankind.
Breaking character for a moment, I've been working on this video since roughly late February. Initially starting as a project for my FMS 303 course, it then turned into a passion project spanning multiple months. The original, 7-minute, version of this video (viewable in my previous video) managed to get nominated for "best documentary" at the University of Kansas' award ceremony, and I knew I was onto something. Between school, work, and of course grinding ranked, this sure took a long time to get to a state in which I was proud to publish it, but alas here we are. Thanks.

hey gang, i just wanted to say how truly appreciative i am for everyone taking time out of their day to watch my silly little gay video. when i was first making this video my goal was to “hit 100 views within this month”, and i think it’s safe to say that goal was achieved. i can’t promise when my next video will be out, nor what that video will be about, but i can absolutely guarantee you that it’ll have the same level of care, time, and resources put into it. i would greatly appreciate if you stuck around to see what else i have cooking, and if you’re interested in any updates i highly recommend checking out my twitter. once again thanks to everyone for watching and i hope to see you soon !

I heavily disagree with you and I think you should hear out my take on it. I have been to plenty of fighting game tournaments/ fighting game events and have only seen anything LGBTQ+ in the last 5-6 years. My take is the opposite, because the community is more volatile than most, the games being very stressful because of the win or lose by yourself style of gameplay, being competitive to the point of being unfriendly for a very large portion of the time you play it, and extremely aggressive in general, it then in turn attracts and retains 99.99999 out of a 100 males and very close to 0 females, so it essentially becomes a "pretty much" all male space, and all male spaces will as an eventually exhibit some form of gay and/or trans members to some degree based on what is considered socially acceptable in general at the time, just like all other mostly male spaces such as the army, navy, boy scouts, all male schools, religious groupings, prison, etc do as well. Add this to what is trending socially in the past 5-6 years and how the groups I have just mentioned have changed as well in the last 5-6 years, and there you go......... I would really like to have a friendly discourse with you further on this if you would like.........

@@j0hncon5tantine I noticed that trend of more transwomen and gay men (as opposed to the other way around) in several male spaces, like DnD, speedrunning, etc. If people outside the hobby view it as a "male hobby" then it would likely attract more gay men and MtF than women of any kind. Except for, possibly, transwomen who prefer women/FtM. I think its more about the implication of your possible friend group than stress, but I can see what you are coming from. Great point about prison, military, scouts, and such. Women's spaces wouldn't attract transmen, imo, because women's spaces are more overtly women-only. Typically more akin to support groups rather than entertainment. Of course, the high ratio of transgender men to women leads to some heavy bias. Interesting how in unsegregated hobbies like gaming and streaming, the audiences are heavily skewed men. Either women are making "male accounts" in the same way everyone online is "18 years of age"... or women have their own internet that men don't know about.

@@ArchSchizo Yeah, I mean, I have been playing for many years and I have played in tournaments and in arcades and special capcom events, etc... and have had people yell at me and get very upset, at this small tournament that I won, this guy shoved me very hard.... this video seems kind of like a fantasy compared to my experiences.... or the creator of the video talking about his experiences in a very small sub group in the fighting game community that happens to be very friendly and supportive, before covid, I did visit a street fighter 5 local where it was kind of more upper class people that were super friendly and bought free food for everybody and stuff, but there was no LGBTQ+ people there that I could tell.... fighting games do not just attract mostly males, but also introverted people as well, and that is a factor.......

I got recommended this vid by a socal local group. When I started at my local last year I immediately noticed way more diversity than other videogame events I've been to in the past (I was only familiar with online shooters at the time). I really appreciate you sharing your experience and other icons in the FGC. The welcoming aspect of the community benefits everybody and I experienced that first-hand when moving to a completely new state and fighting through some social anxiety. Makes a lot of sense that the social and self-improvement aspect of these games invites some of the most awesome people to play!

Your conclusion at the end of the video really spoke to me, I have so much appreciation for the fgc because of the space and community provides. fighting games (for me atleast) are about accepting yourself and improving upon the aspects you feel can be improved upon, and then always being open to helping others get better at their craft no matter their walks of life. I'm not particularly good about putting how I feel about fighting games into words but they're very important to me and many others. This was an awesome video that really reinforced the goodwill I feel for the fgc. :)

one on one combat prolly plays a role on that as well, in traditional sports is very easy for people to get in a us vs them mentality. Would be interesting to see if that also happens to chess, considering that i only ever heard of guity gear in trans contexts i feel safe to assume it does not happen, which probably has to do with the fact that is way harder to relate to a tower than it is to a hot person draw by a potencially underpaid japanese artist (guilty gear is japanese right? i just assumed it because of the convulated lore)

There are honestly so many factors. Fighting games have always been more diverse, also having a disproportionately large black audience compared to other genres. Played internationally, with large rosters of characters designed to have broad appeal. Meritocracy, one on one, with a focus on mutual improvement. And just bonding over shared interest.

Really neat video! It’s always so cool to me to see the experiences the FGC let people have, and this was really well put together on top of that. I’m part of a much smaller scene (the asian Rivals of Aether scene) and it’s led me to meet so many cool people with so many diverse backgrounds that I never would have imagined meeting otherwise. The game itself has these little profile avatars you can use, and naturally had the options for pride flags. I only got into the scene pretty recently after finding out I was bi, and I wasn’t really ready to be so open about it (nor am i now honestly haha). But seeing so many openly fall under the LGBTQ+ umbrella and see the community- MY community, so accepting of that, it inspired me enough to use it when I played. It’s a really small thing, yeah, but it meant so much to me that I could even get the chance to express myself like that. It meant even more to see my fellow players so supportive and chill with it, especially when interacting with other people wearing the same icon I happened to come across on matchmaking or in bracket. Still so happy to be part of this community just for something so small as me deciding to click the cool looking purple flag on my monitor, and I’m even happier to see other people have similar experiences :)

This has been an interesting video, thank you for this. Honestly I didn't think it mattered too much when it came to sex or gender, because personally once you enter the arena you leave everything behind, you're no longer man or woman, elder or child, one sexual orientation over another. When it's a competition that's all it is, one v one...unless it's team based. That aside I was aware about some of this stuff and it's important for everyone to have some representation, but it should be good, and you did that with this vid. Thanks again.

I remember being young and having a friend that loved Shun from Saint Seiya anime and loving the boy with the white hair (dont remember the name) from Sakura Card Captors... At that time, I didn't know that he was homosexual and he loved those characters bc it represented him. Many years have passed, we are still old friends and I remember never thinking less of him bc he was "weird" like to others kids called him... And I think that representation in those animes mattered so much for me to understand that there are people like him in this world. Anyway, today we are in a very weird place related to representation in videogames, moves, series etc... Many times the representations seems soo off to me... and IDK why it seems soo artificial and not the same that I've experienced with this friend. But I fear that the this kind of "miss representation" is somehow upsetting people so much more.... and I feel that many times is incentivizing more racism and more prejudice. There is any balance to this approach of representation? Why I feel that a new Star Wars character super dull and generic while I love each cast of anime Dungeon Meshi (where almost every single body type, color and minority is represented in there) ? It's really werdy... maybe I don't know what I'm talking about and shouldn't talk about this. Idk if I expressed well this feeling... But yeah... sorry if I offended someone... I loved ur video! i think figthing games is preferred to be played the way it is side by side is due to its roots way back playing it on arcade where both respect and hype is achived whenever a new challenger bravely lines up or puts their token on the arcade cabinet to challenge the current playing champion ... online esports in the other hand hides in their avatar character that most of the time anonimity can change the way people behave than face to face

Maybe RTS is dead because no grassroots rts. I think that could change, you can make a fighting-rts hybrid genre, I already thought of a couple ways to do so. No keyboard needed.

Bridget as a character is sick though and I'm glad she's in the game (not gameplay) and makes people happy.

For me a big part of what got me into fighting games beyond seeing that I could have Megaman and Spiderman on the same team in Marvel was the fact that there were so many girls I could play as. Because oh wow they're girls just like me. They also happen to be very pretty girls who are dressed "interestingly". And while we can and should say things about how women are depicted in these games, as a tiny butch who did not yet realize she was into girls there was just something very magical about characters like Cammy or Ivy.

Thank you so much for making this (and the gender bender video). Im a trans girl almost a year on E, and ive been blown away by the importance of finding a communities that support me. Like you said, its incredibly inspiring to see other trans people succeed (and in my case, trans women succeed).

to me, a fight is as emotionally intimate as sex, and for a long time men have only ever felt they could express the way they feel about another man through fighting and competition. the very concept of rivalry is very romantic to begin with, and truth be told many fighting game players love their rival. love is an energy which helps you to grow, and growing thru competition is what fighting games are all about

It's true that in sports like jiujitsu people say they really get to know their opponent through the matches... also it's a fighting style where men grab each other on the ground, so you might really be onto something
