It’s black barbers too. I recently stopped going to my barber of 5 years because his attitude and customer service started to get terrible! I’m now learning and cutting my own hair. It’s been an interesting process, but I refuse to continue to support black people who can’t even provide basic customer service. So happy I found your channel! 😊

Unprofessionalism will continue as long as we continue to support them, and these poor service providers are not called out by name (otherwise known as "no consequences").

Same thing at black barbershops too. A bunch of foul language, barbers discussing the details of their sex life, smelling like weed and liquor, sketchy looking people loitering in front of the store. And most black hair salons are right next to barbershops, so many of you ladies probably know what I’m talking about.

The movie barber shop and beauty shop depict this everywhere in the world these stylist are known mostly for gossiping , talking about clients looking out of their window and glass doors talking about people who pass it not asking you how you like your hair it's everywhere

I have never been down with being at the salon all day listening to gossip and just wasting time because the hairstylists overbook. I go to white salons and get a white lady that knows how to do black folks hair and be in and out in an hour and a half tops, two hours if I need a relaxer. I don't play games.

Sadly the experience in San Diego California is horrible. I tried 3 different stylists. 1. Told me she does not take new clients even though she advertises her services online 2. Tried to contact several times. She finally called me and stated that she had relocated from the advertised address. I state that is fine. However, she followed up with I will only work 3 days a week from 10:00-4:00 and no weekends 3. The last one I contacted stated that she could not see me for about a month down the road. It really seemed that I was a bother to all 3 different natural black hair care stylists. Very Sad 😔I'm done.

Southern Cal in general is hard for black hair care. I lived in LA and it was the same thing. Hard to find consistent stylists that did quality work.

I was told 9am was my appointment and waited over an hour with no call letting me know they’d be late. The results were good but my time is valuable, I used to feel high maintenance when I get annoyed waiting so long. Now I try to do my own hair if I can manage.

My standards are high no matter where I go. I am more sympathetic with black businesses because I am a black woman with a black business. Timeliness is essential and yes we need that safe space. I've been in white, Asian and Hispanic businesses that were unprofessional. Did I go back... no! I work hard for my money and I choose where I spend it. I don't believe all black hair salons are unprofessional. But I will say as a 52 year old woman, I expect a certain level of professionalism instead of loud music, gossip and other shennanigans. But!! This is not just black business.

Yaaaaasss! I am so happy that you made THIS video! I have so many nightmare stories but the most recent one I tried to treat my 12-year-old by getting our hair done together at a Mexican based hair salon. I called ahead of time to make sure they know how to work with our hair type, and she was so sure and confident that she is a pro at our hair type. Well let's just say the fact that she didn't even want to really touch my 12-year-old daughter's hair after realizing it was thick. I don't know why I continued but let her touch my head and it looked like all she did was run a blow dryer through our hair. No bone straightness or bounce 😭 I made a video on my Channel about it. I didn't want to just post it here without your approval. But yeahhhh..the struggle is real 💯

I honestly don’t know what’s some stylist problem but I’ve never treated any of my clients with anything less then respect. I recently stopped going to this good Braider her work was awesome but attitude was so nasty and so rude. Who answers the phone while blow drying🤦🏽‍♀️, that’s crazy

Wow, these are the thoughts we allll have lol. It’s crazy that we have to go through this when trying to support businesses but it’s so good that you’re expressing these concerns publicly!! It needs to be said. It’s time to change these low standards. I’m glad you got your hair done though! 🙃😂 sn: we’re friends in my head because you had me cracking up!

I am SO thankful that most of my hairdresser experiences have been positive and with lifelong connections. My longest stylist was a good friend of mine and my mother's: he was competent, professional and a true gentleman. Sadly, he passed away four years ago and I went several months without a stylist until my coworker recommended her cousin, who has been mine ever since. The one time I went to a "professional" (local) chain salon, they were rude, sloppy and had me in there until 10:30 that night after I came in at 3. And when my stylist realized that I had been waiting for her to finish her lunch and her pathetic side conversations and *acknowledge* me, her only response was a half-assed, sarcastic "sor-ry!" Bitches. I'm glad they're out of business.

I would’ve never thought of this before but I never go to a salon in general. I wouldn’t like to have to wait for my stylist to show up later than me and unprepared and not ready to go.

I’m so sick of y’all saying “we” as if this represents all black people in total. it’s such a broad variety and black people stereotyping and grouping all black people under one umbrella is mind boggling.

The problem: the rise of ig unlicensed stylists instead of licensed professionals. In beauty school you are taught customer service, the problem is we have too many kitchen stylists.

I’m in my 30’s and I’ve never had a positive experience at a hair salon. Never. I have coarse 4c hair so I’ve always endured some kind of discrimination against my hair texture. I’ve been natural for the past 14 years and have learned how to do my own hair. Trims, hair cuts, braids, weaves - I do it all myself. I’d love to go to a salon and get my hair professionally done and just have a break from all the maintenance but I’ve been traumatized enough. Not gonna bother. The last time I went to a salon was for a haircut in 2021. I hadn’t been to a salon in at least 6 years by then. I was going for a tapered afro. Not only did she cut my hair wet, causing it to be extremely uneven, she didn’t even refer to the pictures I gave her for reference and she used dirty clippers that resulted in me getting a scalp infection.

Wow, I never experienced that level of unprofessionalism at a hair salon before! I’ve only ever had two long term stylist my whole life because my mom didn’t trust people with my hair. It really sucks though, because you want to support them since they are black owned businesses, but what you went through was so unnecessary of age would’ve just been prepared!

I think another problem is, we grew up with this service and therefore haven’t had any different, and end up accepting it/giving up. I remember waiting hours as a kid/teen in the salon and then the stylist would stop my hair to do someone else’s hair then come back to mine etc etc…. I grew up just accepting that’s what black hair salons are like. Now in my 30s I’m like no- I’m paying I want a decent service and polite stylist. It’s a STRUGGLE still (I’m from London it’s exactly the same here) my white mates have a great experience why can’t I 😂

I'm looking desperately for help cause my hair is a mess. The last hairdresser I went to had roaches. Ugh. And now when l read Google reviews l read about the rudeness, unprofessionalism, no one answering the phone and even hostility if you complain. I need a hairdresser!

Whaaaaattt to go get tags for her car ?!! That is beyond ridiculous! I only try to book places that are StyleSeat or vargo. I need to find a black owned beauty bar is. I have found a decent salon so far since I moved. I stopped going to the Dominicans.

As a an African Americans licensed cosmetologist I can attest that it is not all black owned salons. This is who is operating the salon and who is allowing this unprofessionalism. I have worked in several salons in my career where it was very diverse. I have worked in a very upscale white salon where the receptionists where tacky and rude and the stylists allowed it. On the reverse side I have worked in upscale black salons where the customer service was superior by all staff. On the unruly end, yes I have seen black stylist and white be unprofessional. And I do know that I see more black stylist with unprofessionalism. BUT IT IS NOT ALL, AND NOT MOST. A VERY SMALL PERCENTAGE. And this does need to be addressed and does stylists need to be blackballed because it is stressful as a client they are mocking you and all. It's just like a Chinese person talking about you when you are getting your nails done. Africans talk alot of smack when you get your hair braided too it's ridiculous.

Outside observer here - not being American, black, or a woman, while being really interested in haircare of all types. Those clips of particularly rude service that I've seen *sometimes* appear to come from being defensive, while also wanting to he sassy and strong. It can be a very difficult line between sassy and bitchy and between strong and brooking no criticism. Maybe it's being English and lower middle class, but hairdressers of any race or ethnicity that I've had have always been at least polite (with one exception when I was 24 who seemed to have picked the wrong career), irrespective of anything else.
