Hello, I noticed that fig 1 shows mkt price $/cwt and fig 2 shows price $/lb ... could the numbers in fig 1 be off ...$/100 lbs = $/cwt right?

Yes, $/cst = $/100lbs. His prices seem about right to me. I paid between $35-$45 each for kids that weighed about 15 lbs at a sale barn. That's about $2.33 to $3 per pound. I've haven't sold any yet, so I don't know what the sale price will be.

I have meat goats and dairy goats but limited land resources. Is there a place for me in the profitability spectrum? Thanks

there are ways. Let us see. You keep goats on your land. You grow their fodder on leased land and make silage. You of course keep your goats under the stall-fed system. You could even buy silage and feed and check if you can still make a profit. If yes then you could start there and go backward integrating into growing your own fodder etc. on leased lands. Or you could see if you could get to harvest somebody else's maize stall at a price and make your own silage from it. Just a few suggestions.

@@jimbuford4147 kzfaq.info/get/bejne/jaybh7Grt7KudZc.html checkout this video. i have spoken to this man as well. He is in India though. He has 400-600 animal capacity farm and he grows fodder himself. been doing it for 12 yrs. You can even call him if you want. Coming back to your land. i have discovered that corn can be grown in a lot of soils. I have seen others grow it on the hillside. some grow it in orchards. So it can be done for sure. water would be a necessity if rains are a problem. Do you mind telling us where exactly is this parcel of land? So we can figure out the soil and climate. besides, there are a lot of trees which can be grown as well. Goats unlike bulls and sheep prefer 35 % browse. leaves and stems. Give details of climate and rains, water facility etc. But overall what i understand is that you sure can keep a successful goat farm on 30-acre pasture land with a bit of tweaking for forage.

@@MrGYPSYSPADE Of my 30 acres about 1/2 is taken up in buildings , roads, and woods. We are in Western TN and have a moderate climate. Hot and humid in long Summers and Winters are apt to be mild or cold-teens. We normally get an abundance of rain except in July and August, sometimes running into end of Oct. I prefer to let them browse and graze but have adequate source for hay. I don't really like close confinement . Will quality hay, protein blocks and free choice minerals, along with some supplemental browsing be adequate to grow out the meat goats? Thanks

@@jimbuford4147 so if we consider land available for farming is say, 14 acres + 1acre for shed and storage etc. if good pasture you could tackle 10 - 25 goats. But way before this , let me give you a heads up. To do commercially profitable goat farming one needs to learn a lot about it BEFORE getting in to it or investing time or money. All over the internet they keep saying it is an easy business. BUt it isn't. Simply because you need to have the knowledge about the goats and its details. The costs involved and to know what animals to buy for what reason. BUT being in TN you shouldn't have much trouble. There are agricultural unis and other facilities who can guide you more accurately in costs in your area. There are various ways to use the land. So you could increase the number of animals depending on the type of system you apply for managing the pasture land. Your budget and time you are willing to give. you could go for semi stall fed system. In this you keep them under spacious sheds and let them browse outdoors as well. depending on the season etc. But the confinement need not be a constricting space. And the breed you should choose after evaluating the trade-offs. But i think Kiko goats would fit in. Or maybe Spanish. Anyway here is a link to a pdf with links to goats in your area.. i think >> www.tuskegee.edu/Content/Uploads/Tuskegee/files/CAENS/Caprine/Goat-Information-Websites.pdf
