Why are Napthenic base oils used infrequently?

Lubrication Explained

3 жыл бұрын

Naphthenic lubricants often get a bad rap for being low quality - but there is no category of lubricant that is “bad” - only wrong for the application. In this video we look at the differences between naphthenic and paraffinic lubricating base oils and assess when you might consider each. Specifically we’ll show why naphthenic are preferred for transformer oils.

Good video thank you!. Naphthenic base oils come in many viscosities and used not only for transformer oil but also as bright stock replacement in various industrial gear oils and other high viscosity ISO VG grades, in metal working fluids (neat and emulsions), greases, refrigeration fluids (eg with ammonia refrigerants) , heat transfer fluid as in heat exchangers (not truly a lube application), even some hydraulics, wire rope, etc.

Great points. Realise that this single video wasn't really enough to cover all of Naphthenic, so got something else coming later this week!

Never used Naphthenic Base Oils although I was aware of their existence. From what I recall, most of them come from VGO derived from Venezuelan crude. I never understood why they didn't just use the 'extract' from a solvent extraction plant. Usually this stuff gets recycled as FCCU feed & I always suspected this was something of a waste...

Liked the revision of "Fundas" :) Yes, would agree, with this application. That said - Transformer oils should also be subjected to periodic, lab sample analysis. Over a time period, depending on load & ambient temp; Black stuff builds up - To a point where their Electrical, Insulative, property is reduced - Electrical, Conductivity, Increases. Eventually, under High Voltage - Flashover Happens = Big Bang = Power Outage. Industry Transformers, are High Capital - Spares don't just lie in the warehouse... Then there's replacement, downtime...

It seems to me that a napthenic oil would make a good base for a detergent flush to be used in older machines and engines with a lot of built up byproducts. Only used during fair weather due to VI and for a shorter time before draining before switching to an appropriate paraffinic lube oil.

Certainly could do. I've never personally seen it used in that application. One thing I have done in the past (although I wouldn't necessarily recommend this) is to use a marine engine oil as a flushing oil. Due to the high sulphur levels in marine fuel the marine engine oils tend to have very high TBNs (as high as 100) so they have very potent detergent packages compared with standard vehicle engine oils.

The oil additive, Marvel Mystery Oil, is about 70% napthenic oil and 30% paint thinner/stoddard solvent. I suspect other similar additive products may also have napthenic oil, perhaps listed as a proprietary ingredient. I wonder if Marvel Mystery oil might be a good penetrating lubricant that would be better than WD-40 as a lubricant.

napthenic oils are used in some 2 stroke oils for dirt bikes as they have an affinity for metal.
@LubricationExplained
@LubricationExplained 3 жыл бұрын
True, and with two-stroke being a once through application you generally don’t need much oil life.

Regarding lubricant groups: Are most group V lubricants a mixture of other groups’ base stock? For instance, in an automotive application, aren’t group V lubricants blended with PAOs to enhance certain properties of each group?

Not always - as an example Polyol Esters are used for aviation turbines, PAGs are used for gas compression and AN can be used in gear oils and the like. But yes, the are frequently used as co-basestocks (e.g. esters in engine oils)

Hello, I’m experiencing oil consumption in my Cummins, about a quart every thousand miles.. do you have a recommendation on what oil or additive I can use to lower that? Thank you
@LubricationExplained
@LubricationExplained 3 жыл бұрын
Hi! Unfortunately it’s not a straightforward answer. High oil consumption could be due to a volatile oil, but a lot of the time it’s something mechanical like a stuck ring or bore polish. In these instances there isn’t really a one size fits all approach.

How long the naphthenic transformers oil will typically serve?
@LubricationExplained
@LubricationExplained Жыл бұрын
Unfortunately Sergey the answer is "it depends". I don't have a lot of experience with transformer oils but the little I've seen suggest years when treated correctly.
