Native American is a term they used only for a short time to refer to those of who are Indiginous to this land. used after & into some of today to refer to Euro-Peons, The Native American Party was a Polictical part of dark skinned europeans who sought to replace our peoples. & some instances they did. & others they didn't. I grew up in the 70s and the brief bit in school where we were taught about the Natives, we were told it was wrong to call them Indians. But then the school textbooks and teachers went right back to calling them Indians. I've been trying to break my programming on this. But I stumble ALOT! My sincerest apologies!

Columbus was not lost, he was sent to investigate/spread christianity by the king and queen of Spain. He wrote about it and the dark skin copper colored aboriginal people he called INDIAN'S. Europeans wanted a sea route to India for trading because the only route known was closed. Christopher Columbus started the journey to find the sea route to India but landed in America thinking it was India. LOL! People should learn to educate themselves! Later the sea route was found by Vasco da Gama. Before that, the trade used to be by land route from North West but it was closed by the Turkish empire because of a political crisis.

Interesting that he had a world renowned map maker AND navigator who understood/spoke Hebrew onboard that voyage, why choose a translator who understands Hebrew if he was headed to Hindustan? Doesn't sound like he was lost, especially when Columbus writes to the queen saying he arrived at the mainland 33days AFTER leaving the Canary Islands. He doesn't mention being lost or unaware of his location. U.S. history is nothing but propaganda used to indoctrinate those without critical thinking skills, but you are not alone, there are MANY people (like you) who believe everything put in their "history" books as absolute truth.

Check out the difference between "las India's occidentales" and "las India's orientales" back in that time . It was called for about 300 years officially "Las India's ". The Inuit side of my family call ourselves Eskimo. I had and Inuit friend give me shit for referring to her as Inuit instead of Eskimo. It's the Alaskan Inuit that are all butthurt about the term and are trying to turn Eskimo into "their N-word." Silly in my opinion. If you feel like saying Eskimo, say Eskimo, or just ask if someone has a preference. Then again, my family actually has a sense of humour and sometimes refer to ourselves as "snow-japs," which is significantly more offensive. 😂

To add to the comments, each tribe has their own designation of who they are. For example, I am, as the Spaniards called us, a Navajo. However, we call ourselves Dine - meaning the People of the Earth. Within the tribal affiliation, we identify ourselves according to our clans - we have four ; our mother's, father's, and each of our grandfather's clans.

The respectful term that they prefer is Indian. I have worked and spent much time in every single Indian nation in Oklahoma, from the Kiowa-Comanche-Fort Sill Apache Nation to the Choctaw Nation to the Otoe-Missouria Nation to the Peoria Nation, and I have never heard tribal members refer to themselves as native american, only Indian. It doesn't matter if the term was given because of mistaken identity, because nowadays it is embraced and used by the tribal nations and members. "Indigenous Peoples" is something I have never heard from them, even if it is technically accurate. It is still not the term they choose to use. So ironically, if you call them that, then it is actually you who is being insensitive and trying to force them to identify as something they don't want to be called. This is incorrect. India was called Hindustan back in 1492 and the name India had not yet been established. While he was searching for a passage to the West Indies (the general area) he called them "Indios" as that literally meant "people of the land" at that time. More facts! Native Americans did not like being called Indians instead they called them white Indians for respect. Native Americans women had a rule of such about children it’s quite sad (search for more info for this fact) Native Americans traded with Indians for cloth to make clothing pots and items for survival. That's a pseudo-scientific theory. There are many language families in North America, and the peopling of the land happened over the course of several migrations over millennia. Na-Dené, Aleuto-Inuit and Algonquian languages, for example, almost certainly all arrived in North America in separate waves. We're all very diverse and different.

There are problems with trying to use terminology that a people prefer out of respect: • Not everyone agrees on any one term • Over time some people tend to change their minds as to what's acceptible • Some folk prefer not to be put under any umbrella term whatsoever & only prefer very specific tribal names - & even clan names - to be used, with proper pronunciation (else they're insulted)* Aesop once wrote a fable the moral of which was essentially: You can't please everyone. God's ambassador, Paul wrote about trying to be all things to all people - & yet even so he was sometimes beaten, sometimes on the run to escape being killed, & he was eventually executed (which helps to prove a point: that one cannot possibly please everyone everywhere at all times). * = Yet you may notice that such folk don't necessarily bother to do likewise for all others (especially for others outside of their umbrella group / race). Some folk just want to be difficult to get along with. Frankly, by embracing the mis-nomer, "Indian" it always serves as a comical reminder that Amerindians discovered Columbus was lost. 🤣
