Still a lot but not bad since it might be in a prime area and income was spot on spankin’ for the time. In the Philippines (now) housing is rising but a not as bad. Php 3 million for a reasonably sized 3 bedroom + guess house (60k USD) and Php 12 million for upper middle class mansion (220k USD). And those prices are already challenging for the average working Filipino, since salary rates here are much lower.

That’s $10k per year..$833 per month. If college students choose a quality major and got a job making AT LEAST $60k out of school (which isn’t difficult at all for a college graduate in SoCal) there’s no reason they couldn’t save $833 per month. The issue is now that they’ve graduated they feel like they “deserve” a new car or a car they absolutely can’t afford. So now they have a $400-$500/month car payment, which is naturally going to require more insurance coverage than a cheap vehicle that’s owned outright plus they’re in their early 20s, so slap on a $300/month insurance payment. Coupled with constantly eating out and just spending money on stupid shit. Most college graduates could DEFINITELY do it. They just handle money poorly or start families way before they should smh. I’m on my 7th year out of undergrad and literally begged so many people not to do what I just described and fiscally wreck themselves but was just called a hater 🤷🏾‍♂️ I watch the cycle repeat with fresh grads every single year then listen to them complain that they’re broke...while driving a Tesla .. 🤦🏾‍♂️

California also has the most freeways, most suburban sprawl, biggest police budgets, most wildfires, highest population, etc. You get exactly what you pay for with your tax dollars. More lanes, a relatively low crime rate (lower than texas my man), more suburbs, more cops, and a grid that doesn’t explode when it gets cold. Most of the shitty government Californians deal with is local level, not state. You can 100% blame your high rent on your local morons on the zoning board.

Anonymously Anonymous no it’s not, it’s sadly that people aren’t very smart and if they go back 50 years prices for cars to food to gas have increased. People have different beliefs and some don’t want to hustle to live here, it’s not for the faint of heart. The people leaving are usually trying to get ahead while keeping their lifestyle or they are retiring and aren’t able to afford the lifestyle they want in CA. It’s hyperbolic to say it’s bad when for every 1 person that leaves there are 20 people who come in that want to work really hard and honestly that helps the CA economy because those people make CA stronger because they hustle and work hard.

@@Ap_twsh I see your perspective. I work very hard, maybe 80-90 hours a week. This week I’ll hit 87 hours, here in Texas. So I didn’t leave CA to not work hard. I left to make and keep money. So I can fund my retirement, not to pay for the blunders of a mismanaged state. For my industry (healthcare) we get paid the same no matter where we practice. But I understand if you are in select industries, maybe living in CA is an advantage. But all being equal, I have found a much more comfortable life, and wealth, here in Texas. I would have to work twice as long in CA as I will here in Texas. Hopefully CA will improve, because I like the state, I know it well, and sometimes miss it. Fed policy supported this by low interest rate below inflation since before 2008. Now it is too late too little to correct. Real inflation rate of needs including housing, fuel, foods, energy, medicare are much higher than the average inflation. Instead of using average inflation rate of needs upon the percentage of consumption over income. Only good part that Fed needs to sell bonds with discount rate. So, the better solution for CA is to increase the supply over the demand in housing, and offer decentralization of tax and permit to lower cost; etc in rural areas. But no way hose for this.

Personally, I did something similar to people leaving California for Texas. If I'm being honest it's the best decision I've ever made. In Vancouver (my previous city) I was working endlessly just to maintain living standards and despite having a great salary, it was hard keeping up with year to year price increases and watching 2 thirds of my income go to paying someone else's mortgage on a shitty apartment that I could be kicked out of at any time. During the pandemic, my Dads business started struggling, and since I could work remote I moved in with him and helped him pay the bills. Within a year of paying off his mortgage, The reduced stress of not having to work my ass off, thanks to my reduced bills allowed me to focus on myself. By the end of that year, I found my fiancée and saved up enough money for a down payment on a house 2 minutes away from my dads. My mortgage, property taxes, utilities and food for me and my fiancée are less then what I was paying for myself in my old apartment, but here I get a beautiful front and back yard and 2 additional bedrooms. The lower bills allowed me to take on more risk, and to start a business further increasing my income and happiness, the increased space has also allowed me to get 2 puppies, take up new hobbies that would have violated my old rental agreement. Me and my fiancée are even talking about having a kid. This is just conjecture, and based on my own personal experience, but I feel like people are happier, and more productive when they can own a stake in their communities. I have friends that sacrifice so much... They have to do unfulfilling jobs, for assholes just to make enough money to spend time in a city they don't have enough time off to enjoy, that lack of time also leads to them losing opportunities to find people and build families to enjoy their cities with. Even if they're able to save up enough to buy a place, its because they've worked so hard, and gone without for so many years, they'll be lucky to pay that house off by the time they retire. There's an old Greek proverb that says "Great societies are build when old men plant trees who's shade they will never sit in" unfortunately its unlikely that in some cities people (if they can even afford to buy a home) will ever be able to buy a place where they can plant a tree and watch it grow tall enough to provide their children with shade.

As someone born and raised in Texas, it’s always been so hard for me to understand why people leave these beautiful states for mediocre Texas. And I guess it always just comes down to money and space for their family. We had a 4 bedroom house with a few living rooms, backyard, front yard… none of that mattered to me as a kid since the weather and scenery were usually not very inviting to be outdoors. So I grew up on the internet and video games. Whatever one can do inside. I lived in California for a few years and it was so different. I worked a lot to pay for my small bedroom in San Francisco and the cost of living in such a desirable city. When I wasn’t working, I was exploring the sights, enjoying the weather, trying new restaurants, meeting friends at Dolores Park... It always felt like there was something to do. Texas never felt like that to me. It’s just a place to stay inside and save money if you can, even though the wages are much less in Texas on average.

Most Austin natives hate the influx of new residents who are pushing up house prices and making Austin expensive. It's just a cycle, and Austin will follow like San Francisco. I have a cousin that lives in LA. She works for Google. She makes over $100k a year (not exactly what) she enjoys CA but says its very expensive. The issue that I've noticed with Californian's leaving and moving to other states and Cities. Is that they are driving up the prices in other areas. Not saying that is always true, but alot of times its the case. And people from NYC as well. To some places $1400 a month from is considered Luxury Apartments status. Well if you coming from LA or NYC where rent was $2800 a month in a dump, that is considered cheap to them😄.

I visited California for the first time in the 2000's, and I couldn't fathom why anyone would want to live there, aside from the nice weather. Not that it matters because you spend all your free time in your car. I was on a business trip visiting clients along the I-5 corridor, but I did visit the tourist places in my free time. Those places were even worse with crowds, traffic, high prices on literally everything. To the man who said it's easy to save $100k in 10 years...Uh...No. In 10 years you'll need $500k as a down payment at the rate we're going. Get comfortable with renting or plan on moving way, way, way out of town.

I also wish they would bring firearms/safety training back to schools so everyone grows up with them and understanding the responsibility and know how Hollywood's depiction of firearms is a inaccurate. I've lived in a few European countries and for the last 6 years, Australia, specifically Queensland. I recently visited CA for the first time. I have to say it was one of the most underwhelming and even sometimes shocking trips I have ever taken in my life, and I have worked in the Middle East, sub saran Africa and South Asia. Of course, it is richer than those places, but the amount of homelessness, dereliction and atmosphere of decay was absolutely unbelievable for the a state with 6th largest economy in the world, famed for the most prestigious industry, tech. I found myself asking why the hell would a tech billionaire want anything to do with that place, it's outright decrepit in comparison to many Australian and European cities. The weather? I'm sorry but the weather is not even close to as enjoyable as, say, Queensland, and the beaches are incredibly crummy in comparison. Overall I had a good time there but something felt seriously seriously wrong with California in a way I had never seen in a developed country before. The fact that every glistening mega bank building was adjourned with a rainbow flag whilst a small shantytown of homeless tents gathered around it definitely gave me the impression that it is end stage neoliberalism, decorating itself with social justice so the middle/upper class can feel good about themselves whilst actual inequality is through the roof.

Property groups, investors, and real estate owners are making tons of money because of low supply and high demand. It's easier to accumulate wealth by manipulating housing supply and not building new homes for other people because it pumps up investment appreciation. I really like the vibe of Cali and I think it is beautiful with great weather and beaches. With all that said, Texas has plenty of sunshine and you can definitely be in a t-shirt in January and February. I’m in the Dallas area and although June, July and August is really hot, no one talks about the rest of the year which is great! In the winter, you get just enough cold days to appreciate the the warmer days. Most days in the winter you think it’s spring. That super ice storm(I know someone will bring it up) is a once in a lifetime storm. Nobody had ever seen anything like it, so don’t act like that’s a yearly thing. Over all, this is a much better place to live. With housing, it’s more about what you get for the price. In Cali, a million dollar home $350k here. Yes property taxes are higher, but there is no state income tax. All in all I’ll say Cali is cool if an youngster want to move there for a few years and rent. If you ever want to buy a house, you will have to hope to earn at least 200k to be somewhat comfortable in a house that’s 1500 sf. Maybe 2000sf if your lucky. With that said, I rather be in Texas and take the 2.5 hour flight to Cali when I want to experience there!

Those images of San Francisco full of cops and private security agents reminded me to how uptown neighborhoods are in Latin America, like in Brazil, Mexico and other countries, where rich people seclude themselves in areas full of private security, high walls, security cameras and electrified barbwires in order to keep crime (and poor/homeless/drunk/drug addict people) from the slums away... but it doesn't work since you just cannot live in a bubble pretending the problems from the society won't affect you. And there are 2 problems here; 1st, I don't see anyone presenting a solution that people could agree to solve the economic, social crisis, and 2nd, as the saying used to go: "As California goes, so does the US". It makes me wonder if in a few decades the rest of the US will be like California. I mean, Texas is great but is not an island and sooner than later it will start to have problems keeping up with the people coming from California and other states, eg housing prices will start raising and employment won't be able to keep up with the new labor force coming from other states.

Stop moving to Fresno. I bought my house for $260k in 2019 (overpaid $20k). Now my house is worth $380k. I wouldn’t pay that much for my house. It doesn’t look like a $380k house. Damn LA and SF yuppies moving here bringing their progressive policies. Don’t want you here, they say Austin, Portland, and Seattle are nice though.
