Being someone who has lived in Chicago and NYC and now living in a suburb of Orlando the differences are extreme. For maybe using my car once a month in Chicago and not having one in NYC I can’t do anything without my car. The quiet of living in a suburb is a double edge sword it’s almost to quiet sometimes so when you hear a firetruck or a police car you are almost hyper focused on it and I really miss the chaos of living in the city and just the weird and unique things that can’t be described

I’ve lived in the suburbs all my life……Nassau County is my home, and honestly…..The suburbs definitely give off that small, hometown feel especially if you go onto Long Island, but you go far out toward the North Shore or the Hamptons. I definitely feel like the city is really good if you’re into the “hustle & bustle” and the frenzy of it all….however, of course there’s still it’s cons such as which part is cheaper or more expensive, which part is safe, and which part os more dangerous, and etc.

I'm moving to NYC or Hudson County when I retire. I'd like to be in Manhattan, of course, but I probably won't be able to afford enough space to be content. In Brooklyn, Queens or Hudson County, there's still lots of density and public transportation, but I think I can be happy there. I hate the suburbs, so they're out.

The biggest adjustment after living in the city for 30 yrs. and moving to Closter in NNJ was how quiet it was, that and the wildlife. We have deer, turkeys, raccoons, foxes etc. here. I'm Brooklyn it was mainly pigeons and mice haha. Great to be able to drive to the city and enjoy the energy and vibe it brings and then drive on the Palisades Parkway back home. I ❤ NYC and NJ

Although I miss the ability to hop on the train and be in the city in 20 minutes, and all the different cultures, food, and everything else the city has to offer, I love where I live now, and am happy I raised my kids out in a safe, quiet neighborhood with great schools. The suburbs may be gorgeous, but I'm always in favor of the city life. But hey, if anyone wants a parallel between the two, I think the outer parts of the outer boroughs are a good bet. Staten Island is essentially like northern NJ with a ton of nature, suburban-esque homes, and Italian shops and restaurants.

I grew up living both in cities and suburbs, but mostly suburbs which I did not like. As an adult, I always lived in an apartment, both in a suburb where I had to have a car and in NYC for 12 years and thankfully no car. Now I live in an apartment in NJ, right next to the train station so it's the best of both worlds: an easy commute with still no car needed and I still can walk to just about anything I need, and best of all: much lower rent! I never desired to own a house. I just cannot imagine having to spend weekends mowing the lawn, raking leaves, etc. Great video as always, by the way!

As someone who has lived in suburban Boston who now lives in the city for college, I can say I don't miss the suburbs at all. Simply too bland. No exciting restaurants or local businesses, little diversity, and of course, you have to take your car everywhere. Here in Boston in the city there are so many cool businesses, clubs, museums, and the best part, I don't have to take my car to any of it. That means no flat tires, no engine check, oil change, anything. In my view, the city is superior. Also worth noting that some parts of NYC to have a lot of the benefits of both worlds. Midtown Manhattan may be noisy and smell bad, but Park Slope, Brooklyn is quiet, charming, has great schools, doesn't smell bad, plus has the benefit of walkability, small businesses, etc. The best of both the city and suburbs. Great vid!

I agree with the bagel sentiment as someone who grew up in Northern NJ, Long Island and now in boroughs. I extend that to pizza as well. The best casual bagel/pizza places are in the New York City metro- area not necessarily NYC proper. I have had significant better bagel, pizza (and American style Chinese take-out for that matter) in Northern NJ, and on Long Island. Within the 5 boroughs of NYC it's usually hit or miss. Goes to show you that a place that becomes exponentially wealthier (i.e: Manhattan) does not always equate to an improvement in its food staples that have much history there.

As always, great video. I grew up and still live in Suffolk County on Long Island. I like it because I’m close enough to the 5 boroughs to go spend the day there if I want. But far enough to get away from it. I’m very close to way better beaches than New York City beaches. I love the city though. As much as I love where I live, and will probably never leave, I feel like I would have loved to live in one of the boroughs for the experience, just to say I did it. I do agree 100% with the chain restaurants and shops taking over. That definitely upsets me when a local mom and pop shop gets taken out by yet another Applebee’s or a Friday’s. There’s less uniqueness and personality in that.

For those with kids who want a quiet and restful life, I'd recommend the suburbs (although you can be as busy as you want to be). In the city, you'd have more of a sense of adventure. You'd probably be younger (older people like me get tired earlier in the evening than younger people) and very social, hence the bars and restaurants within walking distance.

I grew up in a small town on Long Island and my entire childhood/adolescence I was extremely jealous of "city kids" who grew up in NYC. I always envied people who were able to step outside their home and just walk anywhere they want, which wasn't a possibility where I grew up. It made me feel trapped. I don't plan on having kids, but theoretically if I did, there's no way I would subject them to that. (And I'm not particularly advocating for NYC when I say this; just urban/walkable cities in general).
@bill4514

Also grew up in the suburbs (not nyc) and I honestly don't get why we still have this idea that it's the ideal place to raise kids so many kids have nothing besides maybe a gas station within walking distance and are essentially trapped ar completely dependent on the parents to get any where I get why it seemed appealing in the 50s when people were moving from essentially tenement housing but honestly the idea that you should raise kids somewhere you need a car to get anywhere just seems so beyind contradictory

And, yeah, just about everything was a ten minute walk away (and, like where you grew up, it was mostly Jewish and Italian)…Still, I prefer where I am now, still in the far North of the city limits of San Diego, but also kind of suburban, too…it was a nice place to raise my family

The pandemic really harmed my love of the city. I'm in Philly and it didn't weather Covid well; eating out is a chore, crime has exploded, the subway is very unpleasant, people are more agitated, homelessness is at crisis levels, I could go on an on. I don't know if NYC is any better, based on the terrifying experience I had walking through Penn Station back last September, it seems like it's just as bad. But the suburbs are unaffordable and I don't drive, so pretty much I can only hope the post covid recovery comes fast. My god what a miserable time this is.

Now with remote work increasingly becoming popular and with so many having left the big cities for the suburbs during the pandemic, more people will be staying back in their suburban towns to work remotely and those that may have considered coming into the big cities, many will now be reconsidering moving into the big cities and many of those remote workers in the suburbs are in positions where they will become future business and property developers and will start contributing to many of these suburban towns to turn into half urban and half suburban towns like Brooklyn or Queens or Staten Island with more walking convenience to business and shopping and entertainment districts as well as more educational and job opportunities for the local people and that will even further deteriorate the flux of suburban folks wanting to come into big cities.

I have lived in houses & apartments. With an apartment it’s nice not having to worry about maintenance issues for sure!! Amenities are nice as well when they are included. After living in MO, Los Angles and now NY, I have to say I love NY the best! I currently live across the water from Manhattan. You get more space, it’s quite and not as expensive. I absolutely love not having a car (it’s not needed), there is so much to see and do. Already lost weight with all the walking and I feel more alive. Sometimes things are inconvenient and areas are dirty but there are a lot more positives vs negatives. Unfortunately I will be leaving NY this year for family. I’m excited for the new adventure but I’m sad to leave NY. I do have a list of things I still want see before leaving. I will be hard to say goodbye!

Oh Jesus Christ I prefer The CITY! Was born and raised in Queens NY but HAD to move to Essex county NJ (no offense Jon) before I turned 21. COMPLETE difference here. It takes me a 30 minute walk to the nearest NYC bound train (and might I say NJ transit has the WORST public transportation system than NYC's MTA) and another 30 minute walk to decent stores nearby to do minor shopping. Now honestly as I get older the appeal of living in Manhattan waned especially as of late but Queens has that perfect balance of city life and suburban life and I LOVE the diversity and energy there. I could just walk around in Queens and not get bored. The only reason why I haven’t been able to move back for about 2 decades is again COST.

It depends where. My hometown of Ridgewood, NJ has a train within 6 min walk and the bus was up the street. It was very easy to commute to the city. Granted it was much easier when I moved to the city but not terrible in NJ compared to other suburbs. I was probably a 30 min walk to the grocery store but if you lived closer to the downtown area, you could definitely walk to the stores.

Born and raised here. Only those from here would understand what a magical place this is. I live an hour outside the city in the NJ highlands. Having come to summer camp here as a kid and seeing that suburban life, THAT'S what I wanted ! The way normal people lived. I work in the city once a week and that's my sweet spot. I have neighbors with all kinds of livestock, I ride my motorcycle out in the countryside and take my boat out and enjoy the lakes. As awesome as the city is, I wouldn't have it any other way.

Moved to NYC 6 months ago and all the hype surrounding this city is just drowned by the crime that takes over all the streets. You can’t just go out and have a good time minding your own business without the worry of getting stabbed or having human feces smeared on your face. I honestly don’t know why anyone would want to move here unless they had to. My husband and I had to move here because of his job. He is a psychiatrist at a local hospital. Hopefully he can help people get the mental help they need, but I don’t see this city getting any better any time soon. We can’t wait to leave this place and once we leave we will never come back! Hopefully we can make it out of NYC alive and well…

I am from the suburbs (born in Yonkers). One thing I do love about living in the suburbs in Westchester is crossing borders into NYC without even noticing when driving, and finding that you're already in the Bronx. Parts of Yonkers, Mt Vernon, and New Rochelle are actually urban and look a lot more like the Bronx, Queens, BK, and Upper Manhattan. Tbh I am more than happy with living in the suburbs(preferably Westchester) as long as my commute into the city is not entirely MetroNorth or LIRR. I am absolutely cool with living in NYC too but wouldn't live in Midtown. Not bcuz Midtown is the most expensive place, but I feel like it is hard to wanna ever step outta Manhattan to visit the outer boroughs and suburbs.

Living in midtown Manhattan is special because one can virtually walk anywhere and find whatever is needed , in terms of food and clothing shopping, entertainment, health facilities, parks and recreation and the list goes on and on without reliance upon public transport. It's also not much of a struggle reaching the outer boroughs via public transport, anyway, should there be desire. Ditto for leaving the city ( and country)...it all depends upon how motivated you are in doing so.@Arham Ahmad

@@jessedylan6162 Thats true about the convenience so I see why it is mad expensive. But it also exists for sure in the outer boroughs, even in my Yonkers neighborhood I used to live in but to a lesser extent. The fact that most of the iconic things in NYC are in midtown made me feel like the residents there would rarely ever leave the place to visit the surrounding areas but I hope I'm wrong

I agree. I live in Alexandria outside DC, and it is more like those towns. It isn’t exactly a big crazy city, but it still has public transportation and you can walk or take the bus to restaurants, shops and bars. Also has the subway to easily get into DC. It’s not too spread out so you feel stranded.

Perpetual renting can start cause a strain. Especially NYC. Your monthly rent for a shoe box could be a cut in half (sometimes) for a house payment somewhere else. Or even a condo as well. But like you pointed out John, other factors play into ones decision, such as transportation. Subway to work and home vs car, repairs and insurance add to suburban life. Also age and physical abilities too. Food, too cook/bake or to be served, that is the question? Look forward to the top bagel review you have planned!

I grew up in the suburbs of Miami but have lived in NYC for 3 years. It feels like the outer boroughs are that nice mix between a calm vibe, having a family, and even having a car without having to leave to the suburbs (e.g. places like Forest Hills, Bay Ridge, Staten Island). I think the only issue is the high price of buying a house in the city, like you said!

Forest Hills is NOT a suburb. But if you are old, lazy and timid, then living in FH can feel like a suburb. It takes exactly 18 minutes to Penn Station from FH by LIRR. Subway is also plentful. I moved to FH from upper westside. And I work in Manhattan--Perfect balance.

I think owning a car can be very advantageous, especially when travelling outside of the Subway grid and to New York's surrounding areas. For example, I can drive to Princeton New Jersey or Freehold in a little over 30 minutes. It takes me 75 minutes to drive to Philadelphia. Public transit would take a whole lot longer because you have to take multiple trains/busses to get to all the places you want to visit within the tri-state area. And that includes lots of waiting.

Growing up among Italians, plastic on everything lol. So here’s the thing - renting and home ownership are not necessarily opposing choices. It’s where you are in your life. Right now, I’m a 45 minute train ride to Manhattan and 30 to Brooklyn. And I prefer Brooklyn right now more than Manhattan. I used to rent and I can see once retiring renting again to travel more freely.

In New York, properties in both city itself and its respective suburbs would be costly. You want cheaper homes, you got yo go to suburbs way out of New York. Living in the city itself might force you into getting yourself an apartment but suburbs, you have more choices that you are able to choose landed properties like detached houses. Not only for New York city, living in a city well be very convenient if you were to head to work because most offices are located in the city hub. You can just use the subways. But for the suburbs, you probably need a private vehicle to travel further as you have to commute between other suburbs to reach New York city. If you have pets like dogs, living in a suburb is recommended as suburbs are more closed to nature as compared to city. The main city like New York usually is crowded and and your might not be comfortable taking your dogs for example for a stroll as many places in the city prohibit pets.

I moved from Brooklyn to Rutherford, NJ (Bergen County). I been here for 5 years and I absolutely love it. Best descion of my life so far even though I am single. It so much quieter, nicer, more affordable, less traffic, more space and less crime. My town has extremely low crime rate mainly because it mostly all families and older people. Where I live is still very walkable. I can walk to a supermarket, drugs store, plenty of different restaurants just a 10 min walk from my apartment. Another thing I appreciate is the ample amount of parking and barely any noise aside from emergency vehicles passing. The only drawback, since I am single, is that its boring and not much to do in terms of entertainment in Rutherford but NYC is easily accessible by bus (30 mins), train (30 mins) or car (30 mins). I highly highly recommend NJ suburbs if you still want to be close to NYC and have a better quality of life.
