🌟 About this video:
This video was prompted by some research that I did when I happened to be lucky enough to buy a vintage bottle of Alien EDP. I got fascinated by the idea of reformulation and why it happens.
Have you ever watched a KZfaq video on a perfume, been ready to go buy it and then heard the stomach churning, heart sinking words, “of course, it’s been reformulated now.”. So, so many times I’ve heard this, and I’ve even said it myself! One fragrance I’ve always wanted to try is Lolita Lempicka’s Mon Premier Parfum, but that has so many different formulations and versions and names that it just makes my head spin. It’s too much to negotiate! I’ve given up…
Here I’ve tried to explain the reasons why perfumes are reformulated. I’ve also tried to discuss whether you should be concerned about reformulations, but what do you think? Did you ever try a perfume that you’ve known and loved for years and found it was just DIFFERENT? How did you feel? What did you do? Did you regret buying or not buying backups?
From what I’ve learnt whilst researching this, I think reformulation is happening more and more these days and probably much more than we all realise…
I’ve tried to verify what I am saying in the video as much as possible and not to be sensationalist. I've cross referenced research into IFRA regulations, the actual ingredients of perfumes and the dates of acquisitions and takeovers. BUT honestly, reformulations and discontinuations happen without a fanfare, so they are sometimes difficult to date. Also the reasons for reformulations are often shrouded in secrecy (again, there’s no fanfare usually, unless you are Dior…) so please bear in mind that this video may contain some unintended inaccuracies, but none as far as I know. Also, cost breakdowns for perfume production and marketing will differ depending upon the type of fragrance being marketed, i.e. designer, niche or indie. For clarity, I refer to designer perfumes in the video. Sheesh what a disclaimer!

True, I also suspected that reformulations happen within a year of the initial release. Performance is very important to a good first impression, otherwise sales will be low and the product will be a failure. Companies can probably get away with violations for a year or so, then they have to get in compliance.

I think there have been a lot of regulatory changes recently so that might be why so many fragrances feel like they have changed quickly after release. 🥰

The big industry-wide reformulation came between 2020 and 2023, due to the 2022 ban of butylphenyl methylpropional. The companies knew that this ban would come so they started reformulations early. My YSL Y EDP is strong, but manufactured in 2021. From what I hear, the 2022-present version of Y EDP has trash performance. The entire L'Homme line of YSL has been decimated.

You mean lilial? I haven't seen this video for a few years but I think I remember talking about lilial in it 😊 I didn't try the reformulated Alien EDT but I did notice it disappear for a while and then come back, I assume that was the reformulation! Thanks for watching 🥰

The worst thing is that they hide it and deny it. That’s wrong. And consumers pay the same or more for a inferior quality fragrance. If they want to reformulate, they should put a notice on the box so consumers will know what’s going on
@dr.claire.perfume
@dr.claire.perfume Жыл бұрын
Yes the denial is the problem. Miss Dior has shown that blatant reformulation causes initial backlash but it calms down as more people discover the new fragrance. Brands that do it secretly and deny it become untrustworthy, e.g. Kilian.

Reformulating for changing tastes is fine, if they're up front about the fact that it's been changed, ditto if some ingredient is banned by regulations. However, watering down the juice to increase profit margins is disgusting, and the online perfume community (youtube, fragrantica and so on) should call it out every time, that's one of the benefits of having an online community, protecting each other. Also, when these companies see the astronomical prices people regularly pay for 'vintage' bottles of these reformulated perfumes on ebay etc., you would think they might clue in not to change it, and get that money for themselves.
@dr.claire.perfume

I actually doubt most people notice reformulations. Unless you are a fraghead obsessive or a dedicated lover of one particular fragrance which you buy over and over, bottle after bottle, you will be oblivious. I spoke to one person and she said she asked her friend about Miss Dior and I said, oh which version has been your favourite and she was unaware they had been different versions despite her buying multiple bottles over many years 🤷‍♀️ 🤣 I agree, there is so much money in discontinued fragrances and reformulated fragrances. People really do search for them! I would love to see a brand revive something that is loved but discontinued, e.g. Si Fiori or Midnight Poison. Thanks for watching 🥰

Thanks for a very interesting and in-depth video! I think the overlap is extremely small, maybe non-existent, between people with fragrance allergies and people who actively buy perfume and notice reformulations -- so when companies use "allergies" as the reasoning behind a reformulation I think it is just an excuse to increase their profit margins. Reformulations aren't inherently bad but I wish brands would make note of them more clearly, even if they don't explain why the reformulation occurred. The secrecy makes it feel negative from the outset even if the reformulation is good. They could normalize it by simply writing the year on the bottle or box; I know it's possible to check serial numbers, but just communicating it very clearly with the consumer would go a long way. Then the person could be more informed when buying and not take it home and be disappointed. It's sad to lose something familiar, but being deceived is worse and makes people a bit angry. If a company is going to reformulate, they could at least take away the deceptive bait and switch aspect.
@dr.claire.perfume

I agree that reformulation could be better and more openly communicated. I've noticed that Dior has formulation numbers on their boxes which mean it is easier to tell what you are getting but you have to know what you are looking for because it's separate to the lot number. You're spot on that the secrecy is the biggest issue because being disappointed with a purchase is not a good feeling. I've also noticed that some companies give out old formulation samples but only have new formulation bottles which should not be allowed! Thank you so much for your thought provoking comment! ❤️

Hypnotic Poison EDT by Dior had amaaazing performance and longevity years ago, now it is but a shadow of its former self (or maybe its just lives up to a regular EDT version now) Still smells aboslutely wonderful, though 😊 I wish Dior would bring back a "safe" version of Midnight Poison. It is drop dead gorgeous and unique, and even with some reformulation, I would definately buy it if they stay true to its essence.

Claire, another outstanding video chock full of helpful information. I do wish companies would at least date their reformulations in the title or something - Angel 2014, etc. so consumers would know. That would help people make informed decisions. I totally get all the possible reasons for reformulation - it's all part of doing business in our modern world.

Yes me too. I've noticed that Dior do have formulation numbers on the bottoms of their perfume boxes. LOL I've been feeling 😂 but yes those are not clear to the average consumer what they are and people confuse them with batch codes. Clear labelling so people know what they are getting would be a massive step forward! 👍 Thank you so much for watching Veronica 🥰

Really thought provoking video subject Claire, I must say I find it quite frustrating when they reformulate without telling us, it's not so bad if they are transparent about it. I really admire people like Aaron Terence Hughes who refuses to re-formulate his perfumes, he would rather discontinue them than re-formulate. 🙌🙌🙌 I do get that some of the larger houses may have valid reasons.

Thank you! Yes transparency promotes trust and builds the brand, but I guess some brands think or hope no one will notice. ATH is a very passionate and principled person, who cares greatly about his brand so I can totally see that would be his ethos. What a great way to be! I do think sometimes most people would rather have a reformulation than a discontinuation. 👍

Hi Claire I had the First Miss Dior and I was working abroad for a year when I came back I re bought what I thought was the Original Miss Dior but I couldn't compare bottles because I'd left the bottle as a hint to a ex student who loved the smell of the perfume. Angel...Alien...Agent Provocateur....and Euphoria by Calvin Klein use to be all my signature scents.. The only one that hasn't changed is the Euphoria by Calvin Klein so I keep repurchasing that one over and over again. I have bought the Miss Dior but only because it was being reformulated yet again and kept it for special occasions only!. Great video 📹 Claire looking forward for more content from you 👍.

Hi Shahina! I totally get that signature scents changing is massively disappointing. I can see why you would gravitate towards euphoria if that is the only one that seems like a constant. Great topic! I could list hundreds of beautiful perfumes that are now ruined beyond repair. Red Door, Fahrenheit, Ombre Rose, Sung and so many more. These are not little tweaks. They are completely different perfumes and no longer wearable (at least not by me). Also people have allergic reactions all the time. I've seen it a lot both working in the perfume industry and working as an esthetician, though it is probably less likely with newer chemicals that are made to be less sensitizing. Thanks again for a wonderful and informative video!

Oh wow, I never realised! Did you see anything really bad? My mum has had serious reactions to makeup back in the 70s (her face was red and very swollen for weeks) but nothing more recently. I do agree that modern synthetics are certainly less allergenic in the main. It's such a shame that so many perfumes have altered for the worse. I tried to look on the bright side in this video, but having tried to find an example of a perfume reformulation that was preferred over the original, I couldn't find even one example and that is telling! Thank you for watching again ❤️

Hello again! Thank you so much! I think IFRA seems to really be very cautious with what it regulates against. Any hint of anything and it becomes a limited ingredient. On the plus side, sometimes they realise that something is actually safer than they thought and they increase the amounts that are allowed! That shocked me! 😂 Must be annoying if you are a company making fragrances. 😂

Hi Claire, thank you for the effort you put in providing such great content. Reformulation does not necessarily mean negative, I for example could not do Alien until 2020, and then suddenly a full size bottle is standing tall on my vanity. On the other hand, life is about revolving, and I personally find reformulation part of this process. Enjoy the process.

I think people get very cross about reformulations. It can be a good thing for sure and yes life does move on, change is part of that... Things don't last forever or stay the same. Perfume is about trends. Imagine if we had all the fragrances from the 1940s on the market now and no others, how many people would still be interested in fragrance?

I think that's a big part of it for sure, but I also think there's a drive for cheaper fragrance in some instances. I think reformulation for the sake of relaunch is a very rare event. Most fragrances are simply discontinued. I guess miss Dior is such an iconic line that it survives and is reformulated.

Interesting seeing a video about this. I actually did always think it had to do with popular perfumes trying to stay relevant , modern, keeping up with their time. I think to most ppl (outside fragrance com ofc) they have no idea. I had a colleague who wears miss dior always, and I was talking to her, oh well what you think of the reformulation. She was like what? I said oh you havent repurchases recently? She did purchase not too long ago and didn't even notice till I mentioned lol 😅 even tho the changes for miss dior were pretty big, she thought it was just repackaging

i hear a lot about reformulations, but good thing I haven't really been into perfumes that long to have any of my faves being possible reformulated. but, with fragrances that Mom used to wear, like Dune.. i have a feeling that one was reformulated. because I remembered it to be richer... could be though that my mom owned the edp or my nose just forgot the scent... same with Obsession (Calvin Klein).. but other fragrances like Estee Lauder Knowing, it still smells the same, so i think it's still the OG formulation even though it has for example oak moss and a million other notes. or it could be that they just successfully swapped some notes without affecting the scent as much.. when it comes though to fragrances that I hope i can try with the OG formulations, it would be Casmir Chopard (heard it is sweeter and more gourmand-leaning) and Shalimar. I don't like the new Shalimar edp (YET), but I still want to smell the OG...😁 You mentioned something about the color of the fragrance. what came to my mind was Notee Vanille from Micallef. i remember seeing bottles of that on YT years ago and the juice color was brown-ish, like Wicked Good.. but the more recent ones are clear in color.. and that is one of their most popular fragrances, and there were even rumors that it was discontinued. maybe they reformulated it to maybe catch up with demand and maybe save some costs too. I dunno. or maybe it the oils just need to mature and macerate. Angel has that same issue too right? i keep hearing about the "greenish" liquid being from the early 2000s and the darker one being older or something... p.s.those figures for perfume sale though. WOW. WOW. just WOW.

Yes I was totally shocked by the amount! Astounding! One I've noticed is rive gauche, it's been my mum's signature for 30+ years so I've been smelling it all my life and the most recent can smells very different to me. Another one is my vintage bottle of Romance. The old one has much more oakmoss. I agree with Angel, the older bottles have more honey and are deep earthy patchouli. The colour is green for my 2011 bottle, but brown for my earlier bottle. Dune is an old one that would not surprise me in the slightest was reformulated. I think reformulation for cost saving is definitely a thing unfortunately. Thanks for watching Paola ❤️

I think the praline is not there (which I’m happy about because I don’t like patchouli/praline in my perfumes anymore). The patchouli is toned down and it smelt like the Blanche. The Si appeared to be more sweeter and less ‘cat piss’.

Loving how concise and informative this is. I thought reformulations were solely down to ingredient sourcing or ingredient alterations (natural to synthetic). If the original fragrance won't survive a change of ownership, why not just discontinue it and launch a new, "more relevant" one to fit the new direction? Are brands really banking on consumer loyalty and/or apathy about getting their money back? As for allergens, I know of at least 3 people who can't wear certain perfumes lest they suffer an instant rash or even hives. Ever since I learned that lavender triggers my asthma, I avoid the "note", whether natural or synthetic. Such a shame because I find the scent to be heavenly.
@dr.claire.perfume
@dr.claire.perfume 2 жыл бұрын
I think money is a big part of why they reformulate after ownership changes. They rely on the established product names unfortunately. I guess launching something new is a risk and costs a lot so they stick to changing what is there to make it cheaper. Interesting that you know so many people with fragrance allergies, I never realised that it was such a common problem until I made this video 🙂 it must be very annoying and must stop people wanting to try anything new. 😟

The Miss Dior reformulations are the most frustrating ones. They aren't a tweak because of a lack or change in an ingredient. They are completely different scents. Just rename the damn scent. Give the new scent it's own name and far less people will be angry. If the old Miss Dior is no longer profitable, just retire it. I wouldn't even be mad if they were flankers with slightly different names like they did with Absolutely Blooming and Roses and Roses. Their current practice is dishosnest and is turning me off the brand.

Resistant to change? 😜 Not me 😉 and do I get annoyed? Well let's start with the positive my beloved Joop has of course been reformulated its 30yrs old and you know what back in the day it was too much, way too much. So I like my modern version, there's a little naughtiness that was under the original, very subtle but it's gone now. However, its more wearable, who needs to smell me 4 miles away for 3 weeks... The point is I still get them memories. Then of course Love Don't be Lies... Everyone, even the Native peoples of the artic know Estee Lauder exist to extract money, art, beauty and passion are not a thing and good luck to them. But the pretending something hasn't been changed? Yes it gets our goat. The galbanum thing is great knowledge I know the Madagascan drought changed so many things with vanilla didn't they. The allergies... Yea you know what that is? List the ingredients transparently, not the formulation and people can make up their own mind... My snickers and peanut butter after all "may contain nuts" and they aren't banned or reformulated so I don't get it... Mugler... I'm saying nuffin guv But indeed a great video and thank you for the graphs.

4 miles away for 3 weeks... Mmm that sounds like my experience with angel nova this week. I changed all my clothes and washed each day but I could still get whiffs of it on Thursday despite not spraying it since Sunday 😂 I think a lot of that "naughtiness" by which I think you mean something a little dirty, is not there any longer in designer fragrances. Vintage or niche or indie for that. Oh I have galbanum pronunciation anxiety. I never say it how everyone else says it, but I'm living with it and giving up 😂 I didn't know specifically about drought affecting vanilla for fragrance but I remember the fuss about it for food and I suppose I wasn't thinking about perfume 24/7 then so that might explain me not making the connection. Oh Estée Lauder, L'Oréal, whatever, they are taking over everything. I was going to ask you about EL. I read that part of the deal with Kilian was that they wanted to make a more affordable line to make it slightly more mass market, was that the liquors collection or was there something else? I guess they can't bank on the public not to sue them with regard to ingredient lists. Someone generally knows they have a nut allergy but do they know they have a hydroxycitronellal allergy? 🙃 I only did the graph for you, note I chose a pie cos I know you like variety. If you play your cards right, you might get a violin plot on one day 😂 It may not seem like it from my questions the other night but I actually did quite a bit of reading to make this. @@dr.claire.perfume your research shows thought, it wowed me. Now... The liqueurs line is the second attempt. There was the "my kind of love" line that got discontinued. To be honest the fragrances weren't bad at all, maybe a little pricey for what they were aiming for, but were miles away from what you'd expect from Kilian and go against the whole "luxury" ethos. And and most importantly they were the ones with the utterly ridiculous names. I guess you're right but then again u don't know ur allergic to anything generally unless u have a reaction to it. @@scentedsnowdrops Thank you but yes just a bit of reading and googling. Oh the funny ball ones with the silly names? Ok, I better understand that whole thing now... It makes more sense if they were trying to appeal to trendy younger audiences. I would not have put the only one I've tried, kissing, as mass market though, there's a lot of LOTV there and that seems incredibly off trend these days. I suppose the point I was trying to not very successfully make was that perfumes are a cocktail of unknowns, perhaps more than food is. If you knew you were allergic to one perfume, you wouldn't know which chemical it was. That wouldn't help you to know which perfumes to avoid because many ingredients are in a lot of perfumes. Black box mixtures can be a thing in food too though, nuts especially can be hidden or in trace amounts and when you first have allergy, you don't know what's causing problems. I would never have dreamt I would be intolerant to raw spinach without exclusion diets. So yes you are also right. You won't know until you test. I am glad I don't have a perfume allergy. Must be like roulette... but a bad kind. It's can be quite serious for a very select few I think. The clothes did whiff when I washed them, but honestly I don't know where it was coming from when I was no longer wearing them, maybe it was somehow rubbed on my coat? No idea. LOL I'm not burning anything!!! However, I didn't try OFG yet... 😉 If we ever meet, I might wear angel nova 🤣🤣🤣

@@dr.claire.perfume haha 😂 thanks Claire it would be great smelling that. Yea sometimes it's a mystery what goes on in marketing isn't it. Kissing and Princess were very nice but yea they're gone. And it seems the price of the main line is creeping up 🙄 And yea you're right any allergic reaction is kind of horrific and awful. So they're protecting them people.

@@scentedsnowdrops wow ok, reverse psychology. I might have to rethink. 😂 I don't understand why princess and kissing went either, they were incredibly popular! I can understand that the bottles were a bit of a misstep with the rest of Kilian because the idea is that the bottles are works of art isn't it, and those well, they are interesting, but not necessarily beautiful or practical, but that shouldn't mean that the fragrance is discontinued, unless it was a hydroxycitronellal thing with LOTV again?

About a week ago I smelled Alien for the first time... well... I didn't like it. Smell like a fleshy flower (Jasmine) and Incense. And a bit loud. I can't compare it to what it used to but I don't like it🤷‍♀️

Alien took me some time to love. The older version has a menthol / camphor beginning to it that the new version doesn't have. The new version is also sweeter and feels more screechy and less smooth and resinous. I can understand why it's not something everyone likes for sure. Do you generally enjoy jasmine or not in other perfumes? 🥰
@silverliningfragrance1434
@silverliningfragrance1434 2 жыл бұрын
@@dr.claire.perfume I guess it depends with what the Jasmine is paired with. On Alien it smelled like a fleshy flower - a bit like Orchid which always reminds me like a bathroom spray. But some perfumes also took time to grow on me. I like the incense note actually.

@@dr.claire.perfume unfortunately, except for La nuit tresor I don't know any. I looked up the notes of Alien and turns out that it's actually Amber and not Incense, although to me it smelled like incense (not burnt - there is specific Indian one - Nag Champa)

Excellent 👏👏 youve said it all... This might be the best video i watched on ur channel so far, yes miss Dior smells much more modern now but not as sophisticated as it used to be, i had no idea Because its You got reformulated?? 😢 i love that perfume, i might end up keeping the bottle i have.. Ive heard that IRFA (or ifra) is more about the money now than about caring about ppls health but cant know if its true, it might be.. some ingredients got banned for solid reasons i understand that n some went up in price like crazy but i still believe that perfume brands want as much profit as they can get more than anytime before, thenumerous flankers releases r one of the biggest proofs of that, flankers r just getting out of control to a point its hard to keep up, i like the variety n creativity in that but not when its too much.. The reformulation of YSL Lhomme, La Nuit de Lhomme, Joop Homme, Davidoff Cool Water r the most cruel they ever done imo, especially Davidoff cool water, its just not the same anymore, i deeply regrett selling an old batch i had... love the content n being here, keep it up 🌹🌸

Apparently it has, I bought a bigger bottle of because it's you secondhand a while back so I'm ok 😂 I did film another bit where I said reasons ifra might not be independent since they represent makers of synthetic perfume notes but I cut that out in the end. I do think their regulations might not only be based on allergy. I know a lot of people were very upset about Dior homme, that one is loved. Thank you so much for watching and your lovely comment 🥰
