Even 6 years after release, Monster Hunter World is pulling in players and becoming a sort of refugee camp for players finishing Rise and coming Back to World. Let me give you some reasons why I think so many players are returning to World, one of the best games out there.

I would like to say, everytime the steam charts point is being brought up I always point to the fact that very many people play Rise on console rather than on PC, which contributes to it. Also, a lot of players like myself played Rise, and then went "oh wait, there's another game in the series?" and then started up World. It happened with my entire friendgroup.

I totally agree, we can't gather data on the consoles. The Switch is the only data we'd really need though as World is on all the other consoles except for the Switch. If there's a huge community of people playing on the Switch, then it may be an even split. But regardless, there's a big influx of players returning to World on PC at least. The Steam charts show the growing numbers :)@@Bones_MaIone

Another small but neat detail that world added and rise removed was that cutting rathians tail would remove its poison making it a logical priority to make the fight easier while in rise she just has a slightly smaller hit box and still poisons you despite removing her poisonous spikes
@iggytheincubus
@iggytheincubus 7 ай бұрын
The fact this was reversed always baffled me. Especially when we consider Barioth. If we look at previous MH titles, Barioth stood alone in that breaking his parts actively changed the fight in a dynamic manner. Rathian losing her ability to poison you after a tail cut feels like a natural extension for this design philosophy.

World is actually, or at least one of, the only games to do that because ecologically the poison sack is apparently not within the actual tail and there's still barbs and such closer to the base of the tail. Now to me, most flying wyverns do double tail swipes ESPECIALLY the Raths, like that's the most iconic part of their moveset to me... So when I see that World and Iceborne kinda only gave them 1 tail swipe instead of the classic 2? That hurts me... I guess that's the difference in perspective, World is hardly the first game in the series, just the first one to be THIS big, so it's a lot of people's first experience with the series and that's still pretty cool considering how good the game is alongside the other titles in the franchise.

See. All of these are the best reasons of why people are coming back or still enjoying rise. I just got it again for my PC and enjoying the hell out of it again. Sure I gotta get back up to where I was but should be easy. BUT! I wanna also say that the weapons feel amazing still. I wanna say I do enjoy the fact that it's such a vastly large world as the name states and that it just all around is more to explore, more to do, more to enjoy. This is something to make known and understand. When you give people the opportunity to catch things like the little endemic life life the lil rare white birds it makes it all the more satisfying when you get to also put them in the room, decorate it and sure. The lil transactions to decorate the room wasn't as costly. BUT! At least it's not an entire pay to win. This is something else that Capcom has really cornered the market on. The fact that you don't have to pay to unlock something other then for it to be cosmetic. It's amazing.

I'd argue MHR feels better because, as you said, it feels like "old MH". Though, ironically, MHW plays like old MH with it being so slow. I love both MHW and MHR and go to both frequently but as a GS main I absolutely lose my mind with how slow MHW is when I'm so used to the high octane speed of MHR. Iceborne was NOT fun at all because of how painfully slow the combat is in conjunction with how fast they made literally every monster. My biggest pet peeve in games is making us slow as molasses yet every enemy is twice as fast as us with 5 times the health.
@GASA1997

My main reason for going back and playing world is simply the layout of the online system, let me explain. For me what make up the bulk of the longevity of a MH game is when I take my sets that I have made and go and help other hunters with their quests. In MHW and Iceborne the online quest system is so much better then in MHR and Sunbreak. In sunbreak you have to select a quest to search for and then you will be automatically added to that quest. Fundamentally they sound the same but let me phrase it this way. If I wanted to hunt a Tigerex in world I would just look at the current online quests and then choose one that is hunting a tigerex, but in sunbreak if I want to hunt a Tigerex then I'll have to search for a specific quest (out of many) that is hunting tigerex and just hope that someone out there is currently doing that quest.

For me, MHW felt more like a World (no pun intended) where the community and the base you played in felt alive. You can walk around the base, see the results of things you did. The SOS system also made it so easy to go out and help other hunters if you wanted too. Without that it felt so much harder to help other players in Rise.

What the World nailed is that it really makes you feel good through the story and interactions. Like, everybody assure you that you are a part of the expedition and everybody work together, but during gameplay everybody start acknowledging the fact that you're a good hunter. You become kind of a hero, but not overnight or because of a prophecy but through the progress and the npc's are there to let you know that. You could play with the same party or trade hands. You could also posts quests for others to join you. Hell, in Iceborne you could invite people into your rooms or see others getting armor in the workshop. The whole experience in the lobby was very intimate and care-free. For these reasons, I think the matchmaking is vastly superior to Rise. The only complaint I have is forcing new players to the watch the cutscenes by themselves in the hunts.

Weirdly enought it reminded me a bit of old school lobbies in older MH. Where you gather in the Hub waiting for a fourth player to take on the big boss for the 100th time and make friends. I’d say it’s because World is the most polished and fleshed out game in the series, it’s streamlined enough in design to where newbies can play it easily but it’s also beautiful and detailed in ways that the other titles aren’t. It’s the Monster Hunter that finally delivered on what the intro cinematics and ecology videos of so many other Monster Hunters have been trying to get across for so long which is the feeling that you aren’t a player controlling a hunter but the Hunter themself in a living breathing world full of life that’s actually living and growing. It's interesting to see different perspectives. As a casual player (started with MH3U then went to MH4, played the spin off MH Stories (absolutely loved it) then World, MHS2 (same as the first one, LOVED it) and now Rise), I feel like World wasn't that fun (for me), it made me feel heavy and it was so much more difficult but not in a good way. It might also be a dumb detail, but since I played it on Xbox, the setting is very different from a 3DS, like I don't know how to explain it clearly but I like it feels better to have it in hands, mobile (doesn't help that it hurts my back because I have to sit at the end of my bed... So I guess it played a huge part on why I didn't enjoy it as much, in fact I bought Iceborn and never even got to continue the game to really start it). Plus I don't have the multiplayer so nobody can help me. After trying MH Rise, I found again the joy of playing a MH game. Of course everything I just said is my opinion and it seems like I'm in the minority anyway x)

Me and my bro played the heck outta MHFU until my PSP broke. We got up to the late game where we had beaten kantor and was heading to ukanlos. Ahhh what a time to lie on the bed or sit on the floor yelling to set traps or paintballs or drink potions. World and iceborne are the only other games I've played since then but it was a great re-introduction and I always try to at least get 1 hunt in every day. Whether that be a rajang, a pukei pukei, or dying to alatreon. Iceborne just made the game feel... Complete.

I think both games are amazing. What people have to take into consideration, especially when it comes to Rise, is that Rise was built from the ground up to run on the Switch. Meaning it wasn't going to look as good graphically or have many detailed environments/ecology like with World. If it did, the console would become a pipebomb. Both games would focus on different aspects in their names with World being an immersive experience and Rise being more action focused with freedom of mobility. World was made for longer playtimes while Rise was more of an "on the go" type of hunting experience. To address why users are playing World:IB is for 2 reasons. 1. After a game is completed, players usually go back to older titles and wait until the next game comes out so they don't get burnt out over the recent title. 2. Because the portable game designed with shorter playtimes was ported to systems that encourage longer play sessions. There's also the case of Rise not being crossplay/Crossave. Most who started on switch and wanted to shift to PC couldn't without leaving their progress behind. There's also the fact that the game is region locked on PC so finding players to play with must be abysmal compared to that of the Switch lobbies. It's like night and day. Finally, players need to understand that Rise was never supposed to be an upgrade/sequel to World. Rise, just like its predecessors, was its own thing and decided to experiment with fast mobility and implementation of the hunter arts from GU. Regardless on if one game is better or not is irrelevant. They should take the best aspects of both titles and implement them forward. Thank you for listening to my Ted talk.

I think the right word to say was “ scale”. MHW has a feeling of scale that MHR does not. You feel small in comparison to the monsters you face. And that insignificance in comparison to the beasts gives you a massive amount of immersion and replay ability
@kohlrak

i think that might be it. I think rise's combat was weaker than world, but world otherwise had the weakest combat in the series. On the flip side, the open-world change was huge and made world worth playing over others. But we kinda lost our massive things starting with gen, kinda came back in world, and left again in rise.

@@kohlrak To me Rise felt way better in combat, I definitely liked flying around with a CHARGE BLADE, that's something you would expect from DB, and it was just funny. (I played the older titles afterwards cuz Rise is my first MH) Although immersion-wise, Older titles and World take the cake. And I think that the problem with Rise is that it gets frustrating and gets boring seeing all the same patterns and most of the monsters not being able to keep up with you, and not getting rewarded properly with the anomalies (Mainly the reason i installed mods that would increase rewards). Hell even Magnamalo, which is one of the fastest monsters, was slow most of the times. But when the monsters DID keep up, boy I had fun, I remember once hunting a Chaotic GM, he dodged A LOT of my attacks and I was getting punished severely when i missed, loved that hunt. World was slow in comparison which is why monsters were tougher and it felt better, i could not handle the weight of the CB when i first played World and was fainting a lot. Until I got used to weapons being and feeling heavy, then i started having fun. Slow monsters who could never dodge my attacks in rise where evading a lot of them in world, and it felt new and believable. Tho i still missed the fast paced slaughter.

@@Aquaplayer-yb1sz That's what i mean about the combat being better. Overall better balance in the speed between the two sides.But compared to older titles, world just feels off. I've gotten used to it now, but i remember when i first picked up world (i started back on tri for the wii and played freedom unite and moved up from there playing every generation other than the first), it just felt so off, from the rolling to other mechanics. It felt like something other than monster hunter, but i could never put my finger on precisely what it was. Now i just think it's the earlier monsters you fight, now that i hear from your experience. @kohlrak
@kohlrak 6 ай бұрын
@@Aquaplayer-yb1sz We should be careful what we wish for, though. You want a balance of speed,, but soulsbourne games (MH clearly developed the genre by accident, since they were all trying to copy MH's popularity in Japan) seem to benefit from a slower speed (which i think more fighting games could get their hands on since there's alot of crossover in skillset). It's not immediately apparent, but these games largely already teeter on the edge of peek human reaction speed on some things, and after a while of playing people stop from raging from their natural slowdown. There's a scientific phenomenon here that is not being explored that could vastly affect the playability of these games. Right now most of world is on the right side of it being so slow.

I feel like World is more popular because it's almost like an MMO, it feels more mutliplayer-focused. Especially when looking at Sieges, they are not intended to be beaten alone but with a group of people like a raid in an MMO. That and the amount of content - and the way you interact with that content - makes the game last longer. Rise not having sieges isn't a bad thing, it has it's own endgame, it's just that the design philosophy is different. When I replayed Rise a second time with friends one of them said that the game feels more "arcade-y" which is a fitting way to describe it. It's a lot more streamlined in many ways, more "convenient" with a bunch of QoL changes which in turn hurts the longevity I believe.

I started with world and one of the things that i absolutely love about it is the intractability with things around you as you fight. depending in where you are in a given region and your game knowledge you can deal tons of damage to a monster in bursts. it rewards the player for thinking about their environment and observing the tools at their disposal. you could fight Rathalos on top of the ancient forest tree for like 10 minutes then it moves you chase it down and repeat, or you could use various different methods of causing the waterfall giving you a huge opportunity for damage and moving the monster to a different place which can be advantageous. Rise just felt like there wasnt anything to do except hit the monster. Hitting the monster is still the core gameplay in world but i had options i had the ability to take a risk on a trap or something to give me the upper hand against a truly intimidating monster. and once i learned a monsters attacks and behaviors like an actual researcher i didnt need those traps because i could now dance with the monster and hunt it faster and faster each time. You are given the stepping stones to becoming a better hunter and left to your own devices to see if you can walk along them. this was super long winded but that is one of the biggest things i noticed between the 2 games :3

You can still interact with the environment but they shifted it to more of animals and other monsters you come across hunter helper that can take a killing blow for you explode deal guaranteed blight and power up items if collected and the ability to control and lure monsters make it so you can kill almost all monsters after mounting about 5 times or well every monsters once atleast including new ones that show it is definitely not the same but something i did when i was under geared and fighting when getting hit ment getting one shot with or without full hp or deal that much damage myself it was simpler when you could just make a rock fall on it and or shoot it into place that would act as natural traps when destroyed ect and that was waterfall was a godsend to me when i first learned about it

Wyvern Riding was the mechanic that really made me dread playing Rise. Having every monster become a lobotomite the second another one enters the area and being given a free Wyvern Ride and unearned damage really didnt sit well with me. Also i personally think it inspired some really obnoxious playstyles from other people where they'll either not engage the target and instead run off to grab another monster or they'll hop on the one you're fighting and start running to a different area entirely. Also spiribirds are a terribly thought-out mechanic that makes some of your items useless unless you've taken time to go and gather the max number of birds, i really don't know what the thought process with them was.

My guess on why, is the mounting system. In Rise there's no real mounting and you technically have to fight the monster, (or secondary monster) to ride it, unless the hunters want to bypass all the tedious work and find the endemic life which kind of stops the flow of combat, much like in 4U. Meanwhile in World, there's this sense of superiority when we mount the monsters and many "saved your life bro" moments. 😋

I played Rise as well and can say that you nailed a lot of why I missed World, but there's one other thing for me: the style of the armor/weapons. This comes down to preference, but basically NONE of the armor or weapon aesthetics excited me in Rise. Sure, I would do the work to get upgrade and build sets, but at the end of the day there was like... One? Maybe two outfits I enjoyed looking at? Compare that to World, which had gear that always impressed me and inspired me to grind for it! I have dozens of layered armor sets saved in that game. I think a lot of hunters will agree that the true end game is style.

The endgame is just trying to get better quest clearing time just for personal satisfaction. And the lack of siege monsters really sucks. Every one of my fondest MH memories involve siege monsters. Lao shan lung in freedom unite, Dire Miralis in 3 ultimate, Gogmazios and Dalamadur ni 4U. And World have the best siege monsters ever. Both games suit different play styles. If anything, I feel like Rise's pick up and go style of play works wonderfully in tandem with World's more long session orientated play. If you want to have some games that'll keep you plenty busy, there you go.

When I played Rise one thing that I really didn’t like was how much of a separation between playing with friends and by yourself was. To this day me and my friends had a lot of issues with the this, because how easy it was to get into a match with friends.

I feel like one big thing missed in the video is SoS flares In Rise it feels like a chore to go out of your way to find sessions or groups to play with, while in World you just hit the SoS flare menu, pick a hunt and get straight into it Today I saw 2 pages of Appointed quests in the master rank SoS flare menu at different hours of the day, that really shows how active the game is right now

It sucks because I really enjoy Rise and the variety of the monsters they have added compared to World ( Where are my GIANT SPIDERS AND CRABS, CAPCOM???? ), but World has an infinitely more immersive feel to it. It's fun to go in and "search" for monsters, it's fun to capture little creatures and decorate my room with it. It also feels more... I don't know how to explain it. Rise tried to make it feel 'immersive' by adding in those little birds that boost your stats, but let's be rael, after a certain point, it becomes more of a chore and a waste of time to run around an area for those birds instead of just going to the monster immediately. I will say, one of my misgivings about going back to World from Rise is that I can't stand the tenderize mechanic ( because I'm a filthy rotten bow main AND I tend to play strictly solo 90% of the time so tenderizing is even MORE of a chore ). Rise doesn't have that, so it just feels much better to me and infinitely less tedious. All in all, I hope the next game takes the immersion and alive feeling of its world from MHW ( please god the level design of the maps were top tier and felt so big ) and the quality of life changes and monster roster from Rise. I have my fingers crossed... And don't fucking bring back tenderizing, Capcom.

For me it burned me out how weak the base charge blade felt in rise, having played world at release as the first Monster Hunter. Even returning to world to rush through the base game on pc to get to iceborne, the weapon just felt better, the small stops when doing big hits to emphasise the impact of a discharge attack. I do miss the weapon styles a bit, which were a nice return to the series (hearsay, and I genuinely liked them).

I think there's a lot of World/IB players who doesn't really realise how deep the attention to details is crazy in this game. After a THOUSAND hours playing with my beloved character, i discovered that if you get your friendship to max level with the cat buddies that you can find in every maps, you can go to there camps and trade with them so they give you access to secrets treasures hidden in every map except guiding lands. The treasures are not really important, nothing that can help you in your gameplay but the fact that it is a thing made me think that the developpers really put a ton of attention in this game to really feel like it's alive, that everything was living long before you arrived. PS: the endgame in rise is long for nothing and a little pain to farm the materials to upgrade your stuff. But it would be less boring if you could just go hunt with a full bar of health and stamina.... this idea is trash as hell and it make me waste a ton of time when i want to fight against monster that can one shot my half bar of health.... plus the fact that, learning the patterns of the monsters i already fought ten times to upgrade the quest, i just obliterate them in the end... I beg you Capcom, stop this

I have 1,000 hours in Rise on the Switch, so I love the game to bits and still play it often, but even I find myself going back to World often or recommending it to new players more than I do with Rise. Playing Rise is SO fun, and there’s a lot of really good additions and QoL added to the series with Rise. But it’s all the fun without the same satisfaction and adrenaline of World, not to mention how much more immersive World is.

I think you nailed it when talking about the "feeling" of it. I really liked Rise, but I don't love it like I love Worlds because the feeling just isn't there. Rise is a lot of fun, but lacks the immersion and satisfaction of World, not from any one major flaw but just from a lot of small things. For me at least, it was mainly the feel of the monsters and the environment. While I think many of Rise's new monsters are cool/fun none of them did it for me in the same way my favorites from World did in a way that is difficult to really put my finger on. The fact it is so difficult to put my finger on why lends credence to the idea that it's just a lot of little things that add up. I'm glad you mentioned the hardware issue, though, since I get the feeling that designing for the Switch first and foremost limited what they could do. Given that, I think making Rise fast paced and light, more focused on action than immersion, might have been the best way to handle it, even if it lacks the impact that World had. After all, World still exists, and I had a lot of fun with Rise just taking it to a friend's house for a hang out and some hunts, which is something the handheld excels at

Your point on the difference of the weight of the weapons is really the biggest thing for me. I started playing world with light weapons, but after 700 hours, I've fallen in love with the heavy weapons as well. Every weapon has a different weight and feel to it, and it feels great to master each one. This isn't an attempt to bash mhr. It's a great game, and I see that clearly. It just doesn't feel as good in my personal opinion I've tried rise on multiple occasions, but the lack of "oomph" really ruins it for me. I'm heavily considering giving rise another try and just playing dual blades to see if a light weapon fits the movement better.

I'm not a rise player moving back to world. but I will say one reason I would use if I were to start up monster hunter and why I would choose to play World. my first monster hunter of all was monster hunter World. the first one that hit on steam /pc. moving away from that first full experience, I just compare everything back to that experience and it's tough to beat the slow immersive tense game that playing world as a first game gave me that rise didn't manage for me. also it took so long for me to get through rise content that I wasn't enjoying myself, especially knowing that something entirely game changing, the jet gun lance thing, is content I get later and don't have now and I just wanted to play that thing and I'm not allowed.. turned the journey towards it into a slog and grind and unfun. I don't think I even made it to the jet thing before quitting..

As a Hunting Horn main, I enjoyed the novelty of rise's horn, but man did I start missing the playstyle of world's horn. They're both fun but they are not the same at all. World's horn is so much slower and meatier, and its song system is three times as deep and versatile.

Rise isn’t a bad game, but I really didn’t like how nimble you are, especially for the Great Sword. The added mobility and recovery options made the Great Sword FEEL like a different weapon and much easier to handle. In World, the sound and more tanky controls really give each swing more weight to them and FEELS more impactful. Side note: In Rise, I really hated the added voiceover for the Hunter and quickly disabled it for that classic silent protagonist FEELING. It sounds like you didn’t know this was a thing.

I've only played World and Rise, so if older games do this, I have no idea. One of the big things I didn't enjoy in Rise, is the running around to collect all the little stat bugs to have sizeable health/Stam, SEPARATE from crafting Ancient potions and the like. When I want to farm mats for crafting items, I'll do that, but when I'm in fight mode, I dont want to run around like a chicken with it's head cut off, wasting 5-8min I could be using to fight the thing I'm going for.

I like World's SOS system a lot more. It makes it much easier to just queue up and play with other people. On Rise PC, there's also this weird 6-7 second delay when you exit a menu and try to enter another one (i.e. exiting your chest menu and trying to talk to an NPC). In contrast, World doesn't have this issue, you can enter and exit any menu freely and instantly.

I have a secret reason I'd prefer World to Rise, and that is my horrible sense of direction. I get lost a bit too easily in Rise but in World, the Scoutflies help me go around as well as our living taxis known as the Tailraiders. Also, the FLOOFS (Boaboas actually)!!! I love the floofs so much I would go looking for them first if one can be found in the map. Not being able to find the floofs in Rise upset me a bit. As I had played and enjoyed God Eater, I get the sense that Rise is somehow based on them.

Monster Hunter World made me feel like a hunter. It did that perfectly. I remember it taking me 10 minutes just to find the monster at times, and that never bothered me. In Rise I always knew exactly where I was heading to fight the monster. It felt like every mission was the arena mission from World, and that got boring really quick. MHW is a genuine experience. I hope they can recapture that in another.
