Hey guys,
Thanks for watching the 4th video in my new series, "Dropping Drum Knowledge." The use of Straight Floor Tom Legs is often unknown to many drummers.
I wanted to share my POV from years of experience playing all types of floor tom mounts, and get a conversation started. Looking forward to you comments below!

This helps immensely. I’ve been playing for 35 yrs and never knew about straight legs. Just thought to tape the head to kill sustain. Glad to know this now.

Great comparison. Really helpful to see how floor tom legs affect the sound of the floor tom. I also greatly appreciate the qualit yof the audio and the multiple camera angles. Keep it up!

Agree with your findings with one caveat. For some reason, DW aluminum legs with the right angle and rubber feet removed resonate the absolute longest and I've tested them on multiple drums on multiple surfaces. Sustain longer than the Pearl isolation or booty shakers. Not sure why. Maybe the lightweight of the aluminum

REALLY cool sound comparison!! I'm gonna have to grab some different legs and see what results I get! I currently have one set of DW legs and another set of 0.5" Gretsch legs (with a single 45 bend). I've got the Gibraltar air pocket feet on both... I'll have to swap out those for the hard rubber as well and see what I can hear. Great work man! 👊🏼

If you play DW drums, I highly recommend special ordering 1 or 2 of their "Fine-Tune" aftermarket floor toms legs. They are both bent and straight, and you can adjust between the two. Prob the best floor tom leg product of it's kind on the market today.

I think its less about straight or bent and more about using or not using the rubber feet. I like the results of either straight or bent without any rubber feet. Thanks for the education!

the bent legs can be folded and rotated inwards toward shell and it narrows the footprint of the drum, acting much like straight legs !

I've been searching for straight legs to use with Yamaha, Gretsch, and Ludwig floor toms and haven't had much luck. I do have an old Ludwig floor tom that was made with straight legs, but they're very short AND they do make the drum resonance just right - not too long, not too short. Another idea: I'm guessing the bent lets are vibrating in such a way that isolates it from the ground, but if something was attached to the legs to "dampen" them so they don't vibrate, I wonder if that would also be a way to control the sustain. It's almost as if the legs being bent allow them to vibrate which allows the drum and drumhead to vibrate - perhaps they are causing somewhat of a feedback loop. I'm going to experiment with this some more to see what I can find. Any physics people out there who have an idea?

You may want to check the measurements and then ask A&F Drum Co if they can make you custom straight legs, which they did for me.

Or just turn the leg upside down so that the straight part is on the bottom
