The maximum rate of mammal evolution
www.pnas.org/content/109/11/41...
“How fast can a mammal evolve from the size of a mouse to the size of an elephant? Achieving such a large transformation calls for major biological reorganization. Thus, the speed at which this occurs has important implications for extensive faunal changes, including adaptive radiations and recovery from mass extinctions. “
The Costs of Carnivory
journals.plos.org/plosbiology/...
“Our model provides insights into dietary changes and the evolution of body size in mammalian carnivores. Using a simple energetic model, we predicted that hunting costs and resulting energy requirements would increase with an increase in prey size.”
On the Rareness of Big, Fierce Animals: Speculations About the Body Sizes, Population Densities, and Geographic Ranges of Predatory Mammals and Large Carnivorous Dinosaurs
earth.geology.yale.edu/~ajs/19...
“Although some workers have suggested that tyrannosaurs and other large theropods were able to achieve huge size only by becoming sluggish carrion-eaters, an alternative explanation is presented here.”

At 0:53 please stop misinterpreting what energy transfer efficiency between trophic levels means, this has nothing to do with the second law of thermodynamics! Also, at 3:02 it is not an evolutionary advantage but a direct result of the aforementioned energy transfer efficiency; that's why the prey to predator ratio in a natural habitat resembles the energy usage to storage ratio!

A the closest herbivore wouldthat could be able to do the same would be a camel as far as I'm aware and shockingly there is quite a bit to eat in the world's largest deserts.

@ 1:09 I think you mean there's a 10% /retention/ of energy each tier you go up on the food web. for example, if some amount of grass has 10,000 kcal (the measure of energy in biology), then a rat eating a grasshopper - who feeds only on that amount of grass - will only receive about 1,000 kcal. then if an owl eats the rat, it's getting 100 kcal (this example is all proportional to what it would actually be btw)

@ArrayGamer
@ArrayGamer 8 жыл бұрын
+Andrew B (IrishRebel92) "There's a 10 percent loss of energy at each stage removed from plants" This statement would mean that at each stage it goes up from plants you lose only 10% of the total energy. so Plant (100%) to herbivore (90%) to carnivore (81%). In reality you lose 90% of energy so it goes from plant (100%) to herbivore (10%) to carnivore (1%) and if a carnivore eats another carnivore it only gets .1% of the energy in the plants

Reptiles have a completely different metabolic system than mammals. Reptiles can go much longer without food because they digest and use calories a lot slower than mammals because they're cold blooded unlike mammals. Most of mammals calories go toward maintaining the right body temperature. Since reptiles don't regulate their own body temp, their calories go farther and so they can grow to be much bigger while still not needing to eat as often as a mammal. Mammals need food every few hours or once a day to be healthy, reptiles can go days or weeks without food and be perfectly comfortable. Hope this helped

holy cow people... "vegetarian" and "herbivore" are NOT synonymous!! deer are herbivores, while a human that chooses to eat only fruits and veggies (by choice even though he or she can physically consume meat) is a vegetarian (or vegan if no animal products of any kind (like milk etc.) aren't consumed). Deer etc do on occasion eat meat, but they are not able to survive off of only meat, and do not have the proper stomach to process it, hence they are herbivores.

It's probably a matter of food availability. a giant carnivore would need a lot of meat, which means eating and hunting a lot of animals. Or, hunting equally large animals. There were plenty of huge carnivorous dinosaurs, afterall, but there were plenty of even bigger herbivores living at that time. Whales get fuckhuge, and they eat krill, which there's a near endless supply of in the ocean.

Btw what you said in the video explains my veganism as an envrionmental argument perfectly. It takes 1000kcal of plants to produce 100kcal of meat. That is hella expensive. Having to grow so much plants and use all that water just so you can have a burger. And vegetarians also don't get off the hook it takes 1000 gallons of water to produce 1 gallon of milk. Most rational is to be vegan.

fatsamcastle You are taking my argument out of context, i am talking about humans. Natural predator carnivores don't breed animals and don't over populate the planet. Expecting all carnivores to be herbivores is not only impossible, but incredibly useless. We humans don't need meat or animal products to survive, we can thrive better on plants and it uses less resources. Unlike other carnivores we breed livestock for an increasing population. Since meat is already hard to produce land and resources wise it will only exponentially get worse if we continue this trend.

I suppose Elephant Seals don't count for this article. They approach an elephant in weight (over 4 tons) and do move on land, not well, but they do move. Sure they don't hunt on land either, but if a fish washed up on the shore next to them I can't imagine them turning down the meal.

2:12 ....uhhhh.....I'm pretty sure there were plenty of carnivorous dinosaurs that weighed more than a ton. The next statement makes sense but how did they come up with the 1 ton number? I have to assume that's just for now. Also, they completely ignored marine animals...
@GordonSeal
@GordonSeal Жыл бұрын
Dinosaurs grew so big mostly due to a different environment and atmosphere composition, they wouldn't grow as big today. Marine animals grow so big because the water carries most of their weight, a whale could not sustain it's own weight on land.

How would you use this concept to explain the food hierarchy that existed for dinosaurs?
@Joosterandom
@Joosterandom 8 жыл бұрын
I have to agree with the energy expenditure idea over the physical limitation one when it comes to carnivore size. Looking at big cats, we can see that they have a very active method of hunting, so they're going to be burning energy to do it. Anything larger is going to rely on ambush tactics, like crocodiles or anacondas, or simply evolved to be hyper-efficient, like sharks. Both of which save energy compared to an intense chase followed by wrestling prey.
@latenighter1965

+Joosterandom Then where does the T-Rex fit in? It was HUGE, and fast, and ate alot. Of course so were the vegetarians dinos also, but its the same planet, the same air, the same gravity (give or take), but yet they grew to enormous sizes.

Joosterandom actually the air was the same, temps not, and having more food doesnt make your bones grow bigger, only over time and generations does the bones adapt to overcome animals being so huge. Even with humans the people that are "larger boned" only have bones that are maybe a few ounces, to a half pound or so bigger then other peoples bones. I saw the video on here about how people think big boned is a real thing when its not. Eating more only make you fatter, and maybe over thousands of years or more our animals today might adapt to become bigger once again, but more food does not make you larger.
@Joosterandom
@Joosterandom 8 жыл бұрын
Brian M The air wasn't the same at all. Why do you think prehistoric insects were so massive, when nowadays their repository systems can't sustain them anywhere near those sizes?
@AllPurposeBaked

Haven't watched the video yet. Let me guess: meat eaters are small because they need to be fast to catch prey and plant eaters are big because foliage can sometimes be hard to reach (giraffe).

short answer: because they can and need to be. longer answer: they need the size to house their large digestive tracts, the size also help fend off predators and since the don't have to chase down their food its always easy to get and they *allways* have a steady supply.

Male polar bears average around 800-900lbs and are primarily carnivores. Granted not nearly the size of an elephant, but still something to consider, and as jsideproject mentioned whales and nearly all large sea creatures are carnivorous. Not that this theory holds to weight at all, but it should be seen as more of a guideline than a rule.

I got tired (i'm over 50 now) and I do not find any fun into exercising at all .. my quiet sedentary life all of the sudden turned a person that for 48 years never got up the 130lb limit to in 4 years get into a 225lb .. when the escalade started as I said , I was 115 pounds ... 48 years... i'm 5.9" tall ... @@allisondoak9425 Myself as an Alkarian, I feel the same way. Since the body heals much faster with chlorophyll and less metabolic acids have to be neutralized, I need less sleep. When I used to eat acidic meat and acidic sugar, I remember how tired I would feel a few hours afterward. Plants are energy and humans are biologically herbivores, that is why I feel sustained energy throughout the day. Those that behave more like omnivores and carnivores, will age much faster and have a shorter lifespan with medical problems.

Herbivores aren't vegetarians or vegans. Herbivores can only survive on a plant based diet. Vegetarians and Vegans are cabable for the most part of living off of pretty much anything edible by humans. They just chose not to. A reason for herbivores wasn't covered in this video that I think is pretty important. Survival. If you are built like a freakin tank and can take out a lion then it is clear that a lone elephant has a clear advantage over something smaller and less well built for defense. Size, whether large or small, has a clear defensive advantage.
