The height restriction is the best thing Washington DC could’ve ever done. Lack of skyscrapers and high-rises makes the city feel more “human” and grounded, if that makes sense. And when combined with DC’s French street layout and classical stately architecture, it makes it feel more European.

@@billhancock8881 That's not a true dichotomy. You can lower rent through other means without sacrificing the identity and soul of your city. Modern apartment complexes with full amenities exist in DC and continue to be built. Destroying the identity and soul of a city just so you can shove more workers inside it sounds more elitist and ignorant than anything I've said. NYC has its own similar rules, which is why all the buildings are tapered. It's some formula about shading the buildings next to it.
@Lv-nq9qz
@Lv-nq9qz Жыл бұрын
@@ke6gwfits called the Floor Area Ratio. It was an ammedment to the previous Setback Law which required buildings to have setbacks based on the street width and the height of the building. The higher it went, the more setbacks a building needed to have. This was a result of over building in Downtown which caused the streets to be dark and unpleasant. By giving a building setbacks, it allowed light and air to get down to street level. Fast forward to the 60's. NYC is trying to grow and remain competetive with other cities in the US (namely Chicago). The city needs more buildings, but land is scarce, so they need to build up instead of out. The Floor Area Ratio concept is created which allows a developer to build higher and with fewer setbacks as long as they provide a certain amount of open space adjacent to the building. This could be in the form of a public plaza, a pocket park, or by buying the air rights of landmarked buildings adjacent to the new building. Probably the most famous example of this was the original WTC, which incorporated a massive plaza into its plan in order to allow the twin towers to be much taller than what was allowed by code for that area of the city. Other examples incluse the Chase bank building in downtown, the Seagrams building, Lever house and the old Pan Am building.

I live in Gdynia and for many years after it was created (1926) there was the similar law in reference to building height , but for a very specific reason. Many if not all Polish cities suffered from sometimes unbearable stench, caused by stagnant air. Because of their height and close distance from each other, air was unable to move around. So in order to stop that very specific issue and allow for air to move freely, Gdynia's building code said the wall facing the street couldn't be taller than the width of the main street it was built by. This led to a very interesting design, since many buildings from that time (many of which stand here till this day) found a loophole to that. In order to increase the height of the building, many of them would have stairs-like look on top. Those floors had their walls not connected to the main street-facing wall and were moved back by around 2 meters, allowing to increase their height and total living space by extra 2-3 floors.

This is a rare example of the government looking out for the general happiness and preferences of its citizens and creating a reasonable law to curtail individual idiots ruining the aesthetic of public spaces. There ought to be a similar law made about how much a city can expand before it has to be content with the size and density it has.
@TessHKM
@TessHKM 4 ай бұрын
How is it "reasonable" for the government to introduce an arbitrary law that restricts infrastructure and livability to satisfy a noisy group of self-important curmudgeons? Aesthetics are a personal preference, not something the government should be legislating. Where did this culture of "Instead of taking ownership of my own life and the decisions I make, I'm going to ask the government to ban anything I don't like looking at" come from?
@johnmccrossan9376
@johnmccrossan9376 4 ай бұрын
@@TessHKM I agree with you on an ideological level but everything has to have a limit. I can't take responsibility for the height of a building like I can take responsibility for my own health. Aesthetics are partly subjective, in that we can disagree on what looks good, but almost everyone can agree on what is ugly. Sometimes aesthetics have to take a backseat to more practical concerns like space and cost and that's fair enough but this case didn't restrict development in any real way, buildings that size were incredibly rare and expensive at the time anyway and it was more of a preventative measure. In some cases the local government needs to say this is a public place and as such the public has a right not to live in a mind numbing, dystopic looking concrete mess. Much like people playing music too loud in public areas it's a nuisance and it affects people's quality of life.

@@johnmccrossan9376 height of a building by not looking at things you don't like and regulating your emotions better. So what if lots of people can agree on what looks ugly? Therefore what? Everybody agrees Arby's sucks ass and, should they be outlawed to protect people from subpar roast beef sandwiches? Besides, if you listened to "people" they'd say Thomas Kincaid is the best artist of all time. When did we suddenly decide that aesthetic claims are inherently given merit by the law of large numbers? People have the right to criticize the government. People have a right to freely practice their desired religion. People have a right to representation when they are accused of a crime. People do not have a "right" to avoid seeing things they think are ugly. If that's the level of emotional reaction you have upon encountering architecture that doesn't appeal to your aesthetic sensibilities, that is something that should be dealt with between you and your therapist, not inflicted upon normal people. I'm sorry for being so inflammatory, but it honestly riles me up when, in the context of a historic housing & livability crisis driven by a generationally privileged group who convinced themselves they had the secret sauce to design every possible imperfection out of society, act like the "benefits" of such policies even remotely deserve consideration next to the obvious harms they have cause and continue to cause.

Washington specifically asked that if any monuments were built to him it should have a flat top as he saw pointed tops as a sign of paganism. The building stopped at some point and restarted with the plan to build a pointed tip, you can see where the bricks change color. This was a middle finger to Washington.

And somehow this is going to solve problems by magic? Washington DC exist so that Congress could meet in a place that was not a state. So your plan is to build 50 capitals. Along with 50 sets of apartments to go with the capitals so that Congress and all of their support staff would have some place to stay. And all of this is going to make Washington work better how? The only one I can see helping is a lot of real estate developers. Then, of course your plan means it’s going to be 50 years before they go back to the original state. Which means I guess all of that infrastructure would have to be rented out? Or pay billions of dollars to keep it in good condition till the next 50 year cycle. Or maybe just build new every time ?
