The reason for the abrupt end of the Templars as I see it is that not only did the King of France not want to pay back his debt to them but he also wanted to claim whatever wealth they possessed. One more thing is that I believe because the Templars for the most part came from the upper classes and tended to be higher educated, they had great strength in organization and leadership. As a consequence the organization lasted for over two centuries and probably would have lasted a lot longer.

It did. You can check The Order of Christ in Portugal which was the backbone of the Portuguese naval discoveries and the creation of the first global empire. They probably survived elsewhere, too, but this is what I've gotten my hands on by now.

An organization that's created to ignores the internal squabbles of their own civilization to protect it from enemies that were dedicated to destroying the world. An group of elite, humble and incorruptible men who don't indulge in excessive wealth and frivolity. Always outnumbered by their foes on the battlefield, but always fight hard. I always see elements of this in other stories from the Lord of the Rings to the Halo series. Of course they were very inspirational, too bad not enough people realize this.

The only place where the Templars were anathemized was France. The English and Scottish kings refused to arrest them. The Portugese king changed the order's name. Indeedm in France the French king owed the Templars money and he wanted Templar wealth. The charges were largely manufactured. Much of the conspiracy theory about the Templars may be laid at the feet of the book 'Holy Blood, Holy Grail' and the film 'The DaVinci Code.' Sure there are some Templar mysteries. We know little about rituals and we dont know much about their founding beyond the story of a small group of knights who offered to protect pilgrims and were given the al Aqsa mosque as a residence. I can tell you that the Templars did explore passage ways beneath the Temple Mount. In the mid-1990s, while visiting with IAA colleagues I got a chance to visit the passages and saw evidence of ztemplar diggings and exploration. Did they find anything? That's a question no one has been able to answer. Within 20 years of their founding they had Papal support and quite a lot of influence. I'm not sure there's anything mysterious here given the events of 12th century. Nevertheless, there's much about the order we're likely never going to know.

The french are a bipolar nation. They did VERY good stuff, and they did VERY bad stuff. And they have had a lot of influence (for good or evil) in Europe. I could simplify it extremely by saying that there are two groups of people in France. The loyal to their roots who love the good deeds of France, and the ones who love the French Revolution. Yet a not so small part of France's population was showing sings of corruption long before the French Revolution. I think it all began around Phillip's time.

Not a long time ago I was talking about something related with my friends. A lot of great heroes we love (real or fictional) are celibate. That makes them more compelling and inspiring. It's like Batman. He's celibate, he's sacrificing all of his wishes, all of his life, to a greater purpose. Celibacy in a heroic figure makes that we get more invested in what they pursuit or defend. Luke Skywalker was celibate too. Frodo. Aragorn to a certain degree (He loved Arwen since he was very young but he spent like 70 years celibate and fighting for a greater cause, and then Arwen was his reward, not his goal all the time, so I think it counts as a celibate heroic figure). And of course, the templars. They sacrificed all their life, they left all behind, even their deisres, to fight for God.

When I first started researching the Crusaders, I went into it feeling right out the gate that there would be heroes and villains on both sides, Christian and Muslim alike. But I will admit that, in terms of the Christian side, I was initially convinced (Kingdom Of Heaven can be partially blamed for this) that the Templars were the bad guys of the Crusaders and the Hospitallers were the good guys of the Crusaders. Now, however, I fully accept that this was not the case by any means, and there would have been good guys and bad guys in ALL orders of the Crusaders (as well as on the side of the Muslims). And the Templars were no exception. They had very competent and capable members and/or leaders, and then they had members and/or leaders that were incompetent morons, such as Gerard de Ritterfort, whose stupid decision led to the tragedy that was Hattin.

@RealCrusadesHistory
@RealCrusadesHistory 4 жыл бұрын
That book floats around, and I know a lot of people who've read it and enjoy it. I personally have not read it, and I don't know much about Dan Jones, but I'm not sure he has the expertise of a Malcolm Barber or Helen Nicholson. Barber and Nicholson are very high level medieval scholars with broad linguistic specialization. These are two people who have personally looked through a lot of the manuscript and charter evidence we have for the Templars - scholars comfortable reading and analyzing such source material. Doing a quick search on Dan Jones, it doesn't look like he's that caliber of a scholar, but I could be wrong. At any rate, Barber and Nicholson are absolutely the top of the top, and that's where I like to go on any historical topic. Barber's book especially, the New Knighthood, is widely regarded among medieval historians as the go-to book on the Templars. Of course, it's good to read widely on a subject, but if you really want to get to know the Templars, I think it's at least essential to pick up Barber's The New Knighthood and read it cover to cover.

The issue with the Templars are myths and folklore. While many of these were prevalent in their own time, many are much more modern. One can take exception with both TV and cinematic portrayals of the Templars as being inaccurate as well. For myself, the Templars are heroic and inspiring. They were greatly feared by their enemies. But a greedy French King, a weak and corrupt Pope and the end of the Crusades combined to take down a might order.

The bulk of the men arrested were not even warriors, but serving brothers in France. Most of the actual knights would've been in the east or in Spain/Portugal. Outside of France, virtually none of the Templars were arrested. Most kings ignored the call to have them arrested and tried. Once the order was dissolved, local authorities incorporated the former Templars into other roles.
