Why Are There So Many Iranians In Los Angeles? [Becoming Iranian-American, Pt. 1] | AJ+

Los Angeles is home to the largest community of Iranians outside of Iran. But what are the origins of this slice of Iran in America, aka “Tehrangeles”?
Watch Part 2: • Being Iranian In LA.: ...
When the 1979 Iran Hostage Crisis happened, Iranians in the United States endured a period of immense anti-Iranian sentiment. They were protested, beaten - even their immigration status was threatened.

I was there last February and the people are so kind in Iran I never experienced this kindness in other places, and I travel a lot. The people are nice, the food and their culture. The people are not their government, they are just human like us. If I have the chance again I will go again to Iran!

My daughters father is from Iran. He was in the Iranian military and was trained here in the USA. He went back to Iran and knew he had a daughter here but never contacted me about her. I forgave him because he is the one that missed out on a beautiful woman that she is today and has 4 son's which means he is also missing out on 4 absolutely amazing grandson's. I wish I could tell him about them but I don't know if he is even alive, just that he was from a small village near Shiraz. He would be about 64 now. I hope he is happy.

I can only speak from personal experience. I was a young woman in London & met many Iranian families who'd fled from Iran after the Shah had been deposed. They were gentle, kind, intelligent & well educated people. The professional classes. They were devastated at what they thought was a massive backward step in their country & wept for their beautiful country. They had lost so much, yet they remained optimistic. I know most either stayed in London or moved to the US. Certainly far, far nicer than the violent thugs invading Europe.

My father was a High School teacher in 1979. One girl student whose nickname was nicknamed " Goalie " whose father was an IIAF officer doing training at McDill AFB ended up in the principal's office sobbing because some girls said some unkind things to her. She asked my dad if when he and my mother came from Cuba did people think they were Communists? The answer of course is no. He told her if anyone asks you where you are from tell them Morocco. Her father told mine how only two yrs ago people thought he was a millionaire because he was Iranian , now they think he was a terrorist. ,

Someone who was advising Khomeini must have told him attack American on American soil and they go pigwild. I remember during the hostage crisis the constant moaning of when Carter was going to take military action? and when Saddam finally sent in the Iraqi army people all over America were cheering , even college students formed Saddam Hussein fan clubs, nobody ever bothered to tell them Iraq was a Soviet client state like Cuba. I also remember my grandmother watching it all and sighing it was all like after the attack on Pear Harbor in 1941. 40 yrs have shown President Carter was right to pursue a diplomatic solution.

As a Persian American who has lived in the middle of Persian Square (a few steps from where the video was filmed) my whole life, I call myself "Persian" because I associate "Iranian" with post-revolution Iran. The culture has changed since the revolution. The culture I grew up with and relate to is Persian culture, not the "Iranian culture" of post-revolution Iran. So I'm Persian, not Iranian. But that's just me.

So many immigrate and make their home in Los Angeles. Torrance, my hometown, was home to the second highest population of Japanese outside of Japan. Second to Hawaii only. Growing up, my best friends was a family that immigrated from Samoa. Our favorite place to eat is this Korean BBQ place in Torrance that we grew up with. My schools were always diverse. Myself, I'm half Mexican half French. I remember when my family took a family trip to the East Coast. My mom was forced into an existential crisis when we couldn't find a single grocery store that sold tortillas in Pennsylvania. LA is the true melting pot of the US. More so than NY.

I don't like when certain nationalities segregate and isolate themselves to a certain district. This starts the problems. They must be mixed within society for it truly to work or there will always be that barrier.. This is why on the east coast we don't have many racial problems because everyone is mixed, unless you head down south of course and that isn't that bad either and getting better. California needs to think ahead instead of just now.
