Check out our WILD TO KNOW series for more fascinating stories: • Wild to Know
Leafcutter ants don't eat the leaves they harvest from plants. Instead, they use them to sustain a white fungus that they grow in their nests to help feed them and their young. After transporting their haul to underground nests-the equivalent of a human carrying more than a tonne between teeth-the ants crush and cut the leaves and even discharge fecal liquids to break them down into suitable pieces for their fungus farms. In our new video, we follow the ant's path and explore their underground farming grounds.

Another, often forgotten, group of insects that are thought to have convergently evolved fungus farming around the same time as ants are termites. This particular group of termites have lost the ability to digest wood on their own, and instead use wood and dead leaves to cultivate their fungus gardens.
