Why are these Swedish islands controlled by Finland?
“History of the Åland Islands”
The islands are part of Finland yet the people who reside in here are Swedish, how are they Swedish? Well, their culture is 100 percent Swedish and also speak Swedish as there official language but still under Finland. This leaves us questioning, Why the Swedish people are under the Finns control? Watch the full video to deeply understand why is that’s like that.

The title is really misleading, even in two ways: The people on the islands are not Swedes but Swedish speaking Finns, and as they have autonomy they are not controlled by anyone but themselves. The general attitude in Finland is that Åland islands is a unique region of Finland, an exotic tourist destination (like going abroad in the sense that nobody speaks Finnish) and as Swedish as anything can be without actually being Sweden. But it is definitely part of Finland.

Maybe but history says the Ålanders were so disappointed when Swedes took it a Mainer issue of them wanting to join Sweden. But the video brings it all. Watch until the every end thank you 😊

Well no but yes. The Ålanders were historically fully ethnic swedes, just like any other swede in Sweden. But now they have been a part of Finland for so long that their population have become really mixed up with Finns. Today they mostly see themselves neither as Swedes nor Finns, but rather Ålanders.

The Swedish speaking Finns in mainland Finland however are not swedes historically or ethnically. They have always been Finns, just Swedish speaking ones.

It is true that when Finland became independent, the people of Åland wanted to be part of Sweden because of culture and language. However, the League of Nations decided that Åland geographically belongs to Finland, and even Sweden did not want to make a side issue out of it. In fact, the people of Åland were very disappointed with how little support Åland received from Sweden itself. So even swedes thought that it might be better idea just to let Finland have the Åland islands... There is is actually a very good study made by Åland Gallup which asks how many people living in Åland really want to be part of Finland. I surveys, 78% of Åland residents support this autonomous region, which is part of Finland. Only 9% supported the full independence from Sweden and Finland. So basically nowadays people of Åland don't even want to be part of sweden or be fully independent. Also sweden and Finland wasn't in war with each other in the civil war, but sweden and germany actually gave Finland's army support in order to defeat the red army.

The whole Finland was directly a part of Sweden over 600 years. It got a lot of it's culture and sivilization through that period. Still swedish is the second official language in Finland. The western part of mainland in Finland has got a lot of swedish speaking ppl.

I feel like with people only speaking English it seems often hard to understand person can speak another language than the main language in the country, but language doesn't define the country. Finland and Sweden are intervened just as Finland was part of Swedish Kingdom for 500 years and the history of Åbo/Turku as second largest city of Swedish Kingdom is much longer than that. First depiction of the Swedish flag is in Turku, in the 800 years old cathedral of Turku. People in Åland have their own culture and Finnish-Swedes that represent 5% of Finns have their own group with their very own culture. Residing in the coastal areas of Finland. Finnish-Swedes are fully Finnish, but they use Finland's second official language (Swedish) as their main language. Never in my life I have heard Finnish-Swede cheering for Swedish team on a hockey game over Finland.

The Åland Islands are Swedish only in the meaning that they speak Swedish and are part of the Swedish culture. It is like with Québec in Canada. The same thing can be said about the entire Swedish-speaking minority of Finland, and anyway, there a lot of cultural similarities between especially coastal Finnish and Swedish culture. By the way, you hopefully know that about six per cent of the population are Swedish(-speaking), and that Swedish is an official language of Finland?

Åland was demilitarized in the aftermath of the Crimean War in the 1800s. It's a separate thing from the autonomy.

The population of Aland islands have a strong regional identity. Secondly, they feel Nordic, third might be European. Being Swedish or Finnish does not even fit in the top 5. Aland culture has lots of influence from Sweden, but that does not make them Swedes. Even their Swedish dialect is unique to the islands, and is completely different from any Swedish dialects spoken in Sweden, or the Swedish dialects spoken in mainland Finland. Genetically, there is much more variation between eastern and western parts of mainland Finland, than between Mainland Finland and Aland. Or between mainland Finland and Sweden, for that matter. The native language seems to be the number one "proof" of Alanders "nationality". In fact, there is a 10 times larger Swedish speaking minority in mainland Finland. These people are called "Finland Swedes", but their nationality is Finnish. Finnish and Swedish are equal, official languages of Finland. All civil servants in mainland Finland must speak both languages. The Finnish Navy even has a Swedish-speaking brigade.

This is not true. The people of Åland do not speak Finland Swedish or some unique dialect that is only spoken on the islands. The accent-dialect of Åland is more or less completely indistinguishable from the Swedish accent-dialect known as "Uppländska," which is the accent-dialect spoken by those living on the immediate Swedish coast adjacent to the islands as well as most parts of the Uppland Province.

Its finnish, there are every a few volunteer conscripts in the finnish army from åland, everyone of them in ekenäs (tammisaari in finnish) and you have to be blind to not see that the island comes from the called finland today, with the "residues" of the mainland, called åland archipelagp, merging with åbolands skärgård (turunmaan saaristo) or is it turun saaristo? 😅 Anyway

Finlands Whites and Reds. 😮‍💨 Here is Good Quote: 🥸 “History is always written by the winners. When two sides clash, the loser is obliterated, and the winner writes the history books-books which glorify their own cause and disparage the conquered foe. As Napoleon once said, ‘What is history, but a fable agreed upon?’” Did any of you know that Red Guards wasn't Communist faction, but general labor movement for peoples of the lower caste to improving their own living conditions. 🤓 While White Guards was ruled by Nobles, High ranking Officers and Rich Land owners with their recruits, draftees and German-trained Jägers(so called voluntary militia) rather than part of the paramilitary. 🧐 Well, the color Red at that time in Europe was labeled as a symbol of communism, while today color Red in the USA is a symbol of republicans. pretty funny when you think about it. 😂
