I never spent a certain amount of money for only one card. But in my early Yu-Gi-Oh days, I did exchange my Game Cube with one game I don't remember for a box of sorted cards. One of those cards was a first edition Blue-Eyes Toon Dragon from Dark Beginning 1, which I don't have anymore because I gave away the binder where it was to my nephew years ago. Guess what? His dad threw the binder to the thrash can because he said those cards were made by the devil.

Same. Ngl, it's hard to take these seriously after playing modern and commander. Between fetches, mana rocks, planeswalkers, forces, evokmentals, and staples for various colour decks, mtg has cost me more than my entire time playing yugioh. At least YGO will reprint their best cards and not sell it to in 250 dollar lotto tickets. I haven't bought sealed product since that and the pinkerton fiasco(unless I'm immediately going to make a profit off it).

@UncleJrueForTue
@UncleJrueForTue 8 ай бұрын
@@invertbrid Well, that is true, but that's legacy. People however, play commander and pioneer for their price flexibility however that's only casual play. The thing ygo players always miss when comparing the games price point is that competitive play always costs money and most locals don't bother playing standard. Ygo players always talking about being gatekept by decks that cost 500 dollars ignore that the most played competitive formats in magic cost 2-6 times that at minimum. People who make the comparison between these 2 franchises are usually never actually aware of the playerbase in these formats or arguing in good faith because they're just trying to say "grr, why good cards cost money?"

@@TheJamieellis The literal same thing could be said of yugioh, yet everytime that point is brought up, the response usually is: "It doesn't mean it should be expensive to compete." Even though that's kinda how anything competitive works, the issue this video is addressing is when the cards aren't seeing/will not see enough competitive representation to justify the price tag. S:p out of a series of 10 matches(as a very small sample size) will be less relevant than a card like Thrust, Fenrir, Accesscode, Baronne, and Prosperity yet it commands a price tag above the rest of them upon release date? The math just isn't mathing.

This stems from two factions: TCG Konami bumping the rarities of many cards in core sets and ruining the OCG's rarity system for sets. Horus and Snake-Eye are far easier to collect in the OCG since most are common and rare with only 3-4 cards at most taking up super or ultra rare slots. Over in TCG anything of value is anything less than super rare. Not to mention odds for pulling valuable stuff is lower in TCG since there are fewer packs per box and you'll only get one card in each pack that is a super rare or better. The other faction is the section of the community who blindly buy into every set of relative value to get hundreds of worthless bulk for some needlessly rare cards.

@TheLordTash
@TheLordTash 7 ай бұрын
@@sluggernott It's usually only the "bling" rarities that go for stupid amounts in Pokemon. The only two times I can remember a card going to insane prices for meta reasons were both complete flukes. In one case, the souvenir card given out at the Pokemon finals in Hawaii (which normally have intentionally awful effects) accidentally had a HUGE meta-defining effect and turned into a Cyber-Stein situation. The other was when a Japanese set had a "ghost rare"-style reprint of a certain Rayquaza card from a past sub-set, but the English game didn't get the subset until AFTER the extremely rare reprint so it was the only version of that card to exist. And it happened to be an extremely good card in one of the big meta decks of the time, so it shot up to a couple hundred dollars. (then we got the subset a few months later and it dropped to like two bucks) Even the extreme tier zero meta cards usually don't break 50 in the lowest rarity, and those don't happen often.

buying a halqifibrax for £45 ($70ish, dirt cheap for what it was) right before arurodon/o-lion lines were discovered. well well welllll worth it. i also brought a buster dragon and had to shell out £35 (like 50bucks) for it, this was when dogmatika released and buster blader had a brief period of being the best deck for like 2 weeks. the card had no other prints other than BOCH, this was before its GFTP out-of-nowhere reprint. the card made its way across the planet all the way to my front door only for the mail man to use my package as a clipboard when ticking the 'delivered' box on a post-receipt. the card was not in a top loader, and has a gigantic tick indented in his face from the biro pen. only for the deck to become a rogue deck 2 weeks later and IDS and Kitchen Synch taking the meta. was NOT worth it. at all. after the GFTP reprint, buster dragon was like £2 (3 bucks)

I think one of the really big issues is the TCG rarity bumping cards for their initial release. When the OCG prints an intended staple, cards like Little Night and Droplett, they tend to release in multiple standard rarities in the set. TCG tends to take those cards and shove them up to the rarity ceiling that the OCG released them at. Somebody at Konami probably has some bad excuse about needing the space for TCG exclusives, but those cards and decks tend to be critically undersupported till the OCG gets them, so I don't exactly find that compelling.

Just got into Pokémon TCG and was flabbergasted about the prices after playing Yu-Gi-Oh! for so long. Bought TWO top tier decks for my girlfriend and me for about 110€ combined. Yu-Gi-Oh! Prices are insane ...

Honestly if I had to say one my largest purchase in terms of singular cardboard was when I think it was lightning overdrive came out with mu beta fafnir and diviner of the herald I spent about $250 on release weekend and subsequent week just to get my three copies of diviner and two mu beta just to play drytron was it worth in the long run yes I love drytron and I still play it to this day

I remember buying a playset of pot of Desires while I was in high school (and living in Brazil). I used my lunch money that I kept saving for some time, which means I LITERALLY gave up of food just for 3 pieces of shiny cardboard, and I don't regret doing it.

I have a new one of these. Just spent around £250 for a playset of WANTED: Seeker of Sinful Spoils and almost £30 for Diabellstar the black witch. I'm hoping she's the next Albaz and becomes useful in other decks around her lore as the new sets come out.

I bought two ulti Rafflesias for like $20 a pop and three secret Seras for around $12 each during Covid era, and after the structures released (cough cough after Pak went undefeated at locals three weekends in a row and convinced people they could win with Traptrix cough) they shot up to $70 and $40 respectively. They've obviously deflated since then but I was smug as hell rolling up to locals blinged out like I had money for two weekends

Getting back into paper after years of Duel Links and Master Duel, wading through my local card shop trying to get Ruddy Rose Dragon to make Rikka/Rose Dragons happen when I spotted The Iris Swordsoul and said out loud "Whoa, that looks awesome!" The guy behind the counter tells me there's a whole archetype following her that drops in a couple months, I end up taking 3 copies at $30 each and then coming back a couple months later to buy 2 boxes of Burst of Destiny. That's how I learned to always read the contents of a new set before committing to an archetype from it...

The most I have ever spent on a single card in any card game was 30 USD for Tapu Lele GX back in 2018. For those unaware, Tapu Lele GX was the big-money support Pokemon for the SUM era of Pokemon. For the longest time, the regular print was hovering around 70-80 each until prices got to the point that 30 USD was a steal. Not only did it search for a supporter upon hitting the bench, it also had a generic attack that was good plus it lacked a weakness. Most decks required at least two copies. Thankfully the last time a support Pokemon hit that price was Dedenne GX but it's price tanked when it got a release in the Trainers Toolkit. As for Pokemon now? You could almost every top deck in the format for under 80 USD except for Charizard ex but that should run you less than 120 now.

My best friend recently graduated university and as a graduation gift I bought him a full Tenpai Dragons deck because he had been talking about picking it up. Spending $150 on a UTR Trident Dragion made my wallet weep but it was worth every penny to see the look on his face.

Bought a secret Accesscode for $130 when I got back into YGO in 2021 when I bought a Sky Striker core to have a playable deck right when Engage came back to 1 (because my other main deck was Lunalight). Kinda worth it since I doubt it will drop out of relevance as a staple to have ready to drop into a deck, but I moved on to Mikanko and Marincess that can't really use it.

About the Brazilian Purchase: 12 dollars for a playset means 36 dollars, which if we avoid conversions, it's a month worth of food or electricity + water bills (if you're in mid/low class). In some places, it does cost a day worth of food.

It's wild tho that tcg peeps doesn't make a big movement to make tcg has rarity distribution like ocg to lower the bar of entry. Seems like albeit the price is high, tcg peeps secretly wants to keep it this way since opening pack can make them profit a hefty amount (aka kinda like gacha addiction).

I got a play set of solemn warning, monster reborn and reinforcements of the army all for less than 15 bucks at my local shop last year. Not my most expensive purchase of Yu-Gi-Oh cards but a really fun, steal that I saw, pretty sure these are all low rarity versions but hey, nice to have some generic stuff that didn’t completely break my bank.

As a big fan of both ghost rares and synchros, when Ghosts From the Past was announced I was crazy excited and had to get a ghost Crystal wing. I watched the price drop from £350 down to £200 and stop there for over a month, so I decided the time was right and went in, deciding it could only go up as a collectable in the long run… The card is currently worth £30…

The most money I've ever spent on a single card is exactly $100. It was 2014 and it was a DDS blue-eyes that was in pretty good condition. The tinest bit of what looked like it may have been water damage in the top left corner, but thats it. Pristine otherwise. I went and got it autographed by Eric Stuart, and about a year later it just fucking vanished. It never left my house. If it was stolen, then someone broke into my house and stole nothing but this card. I had put it up somewhere for safekeeping, and couldn't remember where. I looked for it for like 3 years before I finally just conceded that it was gone forever.

In Brazil there's so many scalpers that a common joke about card prices here is to use Dolar x10 as conversion price instead of the around 5-6x. Some cards go way above that and never go down because sellers don't wanna go minus with their absurd prices.

I was selling my SwordSoul deck a couple of weeks ago, all of the cards are from MAMA, when a guy texted me asking how much for the deck, I told him $46 for the whole deck. He replied with, "Damn, I wish you sold the deck earlier. I bought a set of SwordSoul Emergence for $51". I asked him if it was from BODE (not that it justifies the price). He replied, "No, they are from MAMA." I really felt bad for him.

I "bought" (aka just sold off/traded a bunch of cards over time to afford them like I do most staples) a playset of prosperity back when it was easily over 100$/copy. Considering owning prosperity made playing a bunch of decks much more playable I'd say it was more worthwhile to pay the staples tax than the deck core tax.
