WHY ARE WE PAYING SO MUCH FOR OUR GOLF DRIVERS

Mark Crossfield is testing the new Cleveland XL drivers from Cleveland golf and asking why are we paying so much for our golf drivers? With golf equipment prices going through the roof the Cleveland golf XL drivers ask a very interesting question and one that golf doesn't really like dealing with. The new Xl drivers from Cleveland come in 3 heads the Xl with changeable neck the XL lite and the XL Lite draw offering full fitting options for so many different golfers and coming in under £300 can this golf driver really perform as well as a £450 Callaway, TaylorMade and other such drivers?
Mark asks you to comment on how much you paid for your last driver and also if you think golf equipment especially drivers are too expensive again posing the question why are we paying so much for our golf clubs and golf drivers?

Hi Mark. Generally love your videos as you are so realistic and honest! Us amateur thrashers need the encouragement you give us and all the tech is never going to make a crap slicer into Tiger. I’ve had a Cobra F9 for a couple of years, paid £129 second hand for it and it’s been good. Inconsistency is the killer and I’m seriously tempted to flog it and get the XL as I’m now a total Cleveland convert. Come over from my F9 irons and Rad hybrids to Cleveland Launcher (I’m off 4 btw - Launchers just make golf more FUN!) irons CNX2 wedges and a Smart Sole. Yes I’m off 4. I don’t want to shape it. I want it to go straight. The XL driver is going to be tested as I properly want one. Cheers mark. Happy New Year

I am paying £50 every 2-3 weeks for lessons. So far I’ve spent £550 and I have achieved the best striking in 30 years of playing. I had to also practice, but I think this will lower my handicap from 11 to probably 6 or 7. A new driver would not have done this, but I will get fit in another 6 months if the gains from the lessons are no longer so dramatic.

I’m currently trying to game Tour Edge EXS driver which also came with 3 & 5 wood after selling sim2 driver because of cost, after selling 3 wood came down to less then $100 to play tour edge, which is simular in looks & color to Cleveland’s new XL, I’m currently unable to play golf because of injuries, hopefully will be better when XL becomes available to test. I’d prefer the adjustable one because of preferring the loft under 10.5

After messing around with a few cheap used drivers this year, I went and did some driver fitting. Ended up with a TSI 3/RDX smoke black combo. It was $495, but I was only $95 out of pocket after some really generous trade ins. It's easily the best driver I've ever had. I gained a good 12 yds on average(Trackman, and on the course), with much better dispersion.

I'm really enjoying the fact that you have this sponsorship and the freedom you have in your contract. Honest reviews... I would probably go with the standard too, but it's so hard with the strike variation to see what these things really do, but the models are all so similar across manufactures. I agree with the point about paying too much for driver... which is why I've stuck with my old Ping for so long. Just crazy...

I’ve been having a hard time replacing my taylormade R1 driver. I find that most of the new drivers on the market have a shorter/wider face vs the taller face on the R1. My miss hit on a driver is a high toe shot. Having that slightly taller face tends to not punish me as bad. Bought a used M6 and couldn’t get along with it and ultimately sold it. I might have to check this driver out. It seems to be a good shape from what I can see.

Under £300 with all the tech and adjustability you could ever want. The PXG guys tested this and completely mirrored your ball strike position (out the heel) and yet the results were good length consistent fairway finders too. Just went to a golf shop for my my “fitting “ appointment. I paid $50 to be fitted for a new driver. When I arrived I told the fitter that I’m left handed. The only clubs he showed me (said that’s all they have) just happened to be the new 2024 TaylorMade, Titilest and Callaway All of them $600. I need a jumbo grip and was told that would be extra. Walked out of there and went to a competitor and the salesman actually asked some questions. I tried several other clubs along with the Cleveland XL. I hit the XL better than all the other clubs. Distance and accuracy was amazing. All for $249. I’m sold. So much for paying to get “fitted”.

Think my TS3 was about £350 or even £390. The issue in buying a new driver is testing. My club pro doesn’t stock ‘everything’ so no Cleveland, Ping, Mizuno to get a demo head out on the course. (No chance of getting shaft choices) Top fitting centres are time limited so to get the best out of a fitting you need to narrow down your selection before you go in to it so you get the most out of it. Big retail outlet in the UK tend to be at ranges with big rubber tees and range balls plus a bit of a hard sell. With the greatest of respect, when you say get testing, I’d love to know how.

New clubs (particularly drivers) every few months just make me wonder is tech advancing that quickly? Or are we as players just looking for something to make us feel better - I have been using my same driver for 4 years...and if I rushed out and bought a new driver would it change my game significantly? I have my doubts - I have just started with a new coach and think this session of 10 lessons (which is about a 1/4 of the price of a new driver will serve me better! ) but hey that just my humble opinion!

@@leonsmith6144 I can see that being a consideration if you are playing competitively. In that case, you want to stay in sync with your competition. Only way a new club will give you any noticable improvement is if it happens to be a better fit than the one you're currently using. They all are at the max COR allowed by the usga and have been for several years so the face can't get any faster. The adjustability factor is nice because it can allow the consumer to fine tune their shot shape but most clubs have that option

@@kourt2469 Well there are differences between clubs that are 10 years apart. I just saw a video were they compared Callaway RAZR irons from 10 years ago to new Titleist T300s. I remember swapping and changing drivers, probably 4 new ones in about 3 years, then The head pro asked me how my putting was, which to be honest wasn’t very good, he suggested I might find it more beneficial to buy a decent putter rather than strive for an extra 3 or 4 yds, and guess what, he was right. I do change my driver occasionally, went from G10 to G400 Max about 3 yrs ago, tried the G425 Max but doesn’t seem to be any better than the G400 for me so will wait until the next version comes out by which time I probably won’t really care as I have started to loose distance due to increase in age so just have to get better with longer irons and hybrids 😂. I think the price I paid for the G400 Max was around £350’ish.

Hey Mark- our driver #s are very similar. Curious: What degree head are you using with the Launcher XL and what shaft and stiffness? Thanks.

Funny i was fit into the new sim2 which when I went out on too the course with it didn’t feel right so the next time I went out I took my old driver too test them both and found no difference lol so I took it back to check the fitting and they changed the head so I tested them both again cos it still didn’t feel any better and I’d also seen a PXG new for £205 so I ordered it first time I took it out and absolutely loved it lol and used it a few times now and really love it now I’m going too test it against the fitted one Hahahahahahaha let’s see what happens

I recently got fitted for a PXG 2021 0211 9 degree driver with a Hazardous Smoke shaft. I paid $285 US for it. It is a rocket launcher and pretty forgiving as well.

I don't. I built my own for £150 and I love it. Ping K15 head bought on eBay and a Aldila Tour Blue shaft at Nordica golf. With grip and assembly it cost me £150.

Great review Mark Cleveland like Srixon make great products and Cleveland offer even greater value than Wilson the other sensibly priced clubs.

There is a small shop in Syracuse New York who sells stuff at great prices. Got my new tour exotic brand new at 299 instead of 399 and it keeps up with all the big brands, I know the Cleveland stuff does as well

The weight in the grip could be a problem if you regrip the club or need to change to a midsize, which is what I prefer.

I want my driver price to start with a 1. Last driver was a Callaway XR. It was new but had been around for a few years so end of line and cost £199.

Tangential comment but practical for aging or newer golfers. Driver becomes less important if you play from appropriate tees as per the Tee It Up program. Your score will become more about your skill with all of your other clubs and... if you do gain some skill/distance with your driver you can move back a tee box.

I get on so well with my 9 deg sub zero I bought a brand new one to replace mine when it wears out as I’ve been using it for three years and use it five times a week. I paid £249 for it because they’re not made any longer and I paid nearly £500 when I bought my original. I’ve tested many drivers and I’m getting no more carry or run on any driver produced in the last 4 years compared to my sub zero.

I’m playing a 12? Year old Cleveland launcher ultralight that I bought for $75 in 2011. It is clearly not my best fit as I swing like a hooligan but when I do get it, I drove a 305 yard green the other day. 1 in 1,000 strikes probably, but when I do get ahold of it I do like it. Curious to compare against a modern driver to see how things work out

I got a new Hzardus smoke stiff flex shaft for £80 complete with Cobra Connect grip and a new Radspeed head for £225. Put them together and new driver for £305. That’s £6 more than I paid for my Speedzone driver in November’20.

I bought my last driver new but a yr after it had come out, I paid 200 for a new jpx 900 blue top, I am still playing and getting on with it, but after buying a new stz 5 wood and it being a bomber fairway wood I am really wanting to get the stz driver but wait till it goes on sale, I love and play well with mizuno clubs

Think it would be great if you included smash factor in the numbers. I feel that is more reflective of the MOI on off centred hits, if smash stays up then the MOI is standing up to the claims

I'm gaming a TM M4 D-type that I bought second hand for 179, and it happily keeps up with my mates SIM2 Max, losing about 10 yards when both hit perfectly.... wont be changing it any time soon. I wouldn't pay £400+ plus for any single club, its just silly. The Cleveland XL looks and sounds good, I'd like to test it!

I typically go to club demo days, then hit drivers and figure out what I want. I buy used drivers, most people don't play a lot of golf in a season. I'm an avid golfer and I'm ok buying used.

Always been a Cleveland guy. Great products great price. Started with tour action 6 irons and hibore driver. Finally went with last year's driver new and love it. Any REAL difference between this year's and last year's or should I just save my money?

I bought the Cobra Speedzone for $299 when it went on sale after the Radspeed released. I do wish I didn't buy it off their website as I should have gotten fitted, but it certainly does the trick. I honestly wish that $300 was the top price drivers would be. Unfortunately I think there is enough money available that this will not ever be the case.

I paid $400 for last year's Mavrik Max after being fit for it. I felt it was worth it, but I would be intrigued to try Cleveland's drivers if somewhere I went had them.

The simple answer is supply and demand, we buy them at that price in suitable qts that they carry on. My view is that you can buy excellent 2nd hand drivers for a fraction of the price so there is plenty of lower cost options. If we stop buying the 500 pound drivers then the new prices will come down, but almost certainly something will have to give, perhaps new drivers every 3 years/less adjustability/lower cost materials even
