About this Talk :
In this Talk, Dr. Elst describes that the “Western Universities are sympathetic to Islam” because contemporary west has anti-Christian sentiments. This in turn led to the respectful and tolerant attitude towards other religions. However, according to Dr. Elst, situation in India is entirely different from the west.
In India, the concept of Monotheism and Abrahamic religions is completely misunderstood by Hindus. Dr. Elst specified the striking differences between “Monotheism, Henotheism, Abrahamism”. Even the term “Sematic” is also misunderstood in India. Sematic is a language group and it is not a reference to any religion.
The incorrect notion is that the Muslims, Christians and Jews are worshiping the same God. This notion is based on wrong “ideological evolution”. Dr. Elst believes that all these three religions are different from each other. Usually, the later religion will have a claim over the older religion.
For Example, Christians claim that they are similar to the Jews and Jesus was a Jew. Jews have rejected this claim. Muslims lined Muhammad along with Jewish Prophets and Jesus the Messiah. However, both Jews and Christians rejected their claim. So Dr. Elst believes that Hindus should use the correct phrase “Prophetic Monotheism” to address the context of their problems.

@@gravewalker34 One who has not read Vedas, Bhagabat Geeta must not proclaim oneself as spokesperson of Sanatan Dharma - irrespective of being Hindu or Non-Hundu. Else even a Ganapati puja organiser will think as torch bearer of Sanatan Dharma. Also basics of Hinduism has to be introduced as a course. Having many specializations and schools of thoughts in Sanatana dharma is not an excuse of not knowing the basics.

Some idiot has edited this clip out with the title "Why Are Western Universities Sympathetic to Islam against Hinduism ?" when the clip itself is about explaining why using the term "semitic" is inaccurate and problematic(which it is and he makes a really important point for hindus, if only they were free of their mindless arrogance and neurotic hysteria to listen). At no point in this clip does he go into answering the question that was put in the title. That isn't the mistake of the speaker but of the idiot who edited this whole thing. He's not "beating around the bush to ignore the reality". Learn to read, listen and comprehend.

Christians and Muslims have Abrahimic origins. Like Hindu and Buddhists have Dharmic origins. But Hindus and Buddhists respect each other as they do not claim "One True God" and Muslims and Christians fight as both claim "One True God" and there can only be one "One True God".

Direct Answer: Western Universities are more sympathetic to Islam because (1) It comes out of the same "prophetic tradition" as Christianity that is so familiar to Westerners. Islam shares belief in the same biblical figures like Abraham, Moses, Jesus and has a similar outlook on God as a jealous being who demands exclusive worship and harshly punishes disbelievers and "idolaters." This Islamic perspective is understandable to Westerners who grew up surrounded by Christianity, but Hinduism in contrast is strange and unfamiliar to them. And (2) Muslim organizations have learned how to game political correctness and sway Western academic discourse towards constructing a victimhood narrative in which critical expressions towards Islam or Muslims are classified as "Islamophobia." But how many Western politicians who talk about the dangers of Islamophobia have ever even mentioned "Hinduphobia?"

Hinduism doesn't doesn't force to blindly follow rules , rituals ,etc Like a loving, patient parent it waits for the person to follow out of love. Even then it accepts any mode out of the various ways it offers , out of love for the individuality of each entity. It doesn't make false promises. It teaches law of karma. The convertion obsessed religions poison the minds of gullible , vulnerable people and lure with false promises.

True ....we were never forced in childhood to go to temples...we do it now out of devotion and love, we were never forced to do vrat or any fasting but we do it now by being aware of its benefits and devotion to our love for our choice of diety whose bhakti directs our vision and spirituality to achieve and be one with the supreme being, we were never taught either in home or some radical school to convert people and force them to have our own belief.....we have been always groomed to observe and be open to learning

He got sidetracked by the usage of the word Semitic which he has always asked Hindus to not use if they want to be understood clearly in the west. It is the video which should have been better edited and needs to be retitled to reflect its true contents. (And maybe he answers the universities and Islam question later in the full interview, I don't know.) If you have ever read anything by Dr. Elst, you will know that the last thing he needs to do is "escape". That's laughably wrong. He has written entire books exposing the history of islam in India and Ayodhya etc. He also has no western university academic career that he needs to worry about retaining (PRECISELY because he's so open about the faults of islam etc.) So, before you make statements like "clever escape" it's good to know what you're insinuating and about whom.

For Western, Christianity can spread faster than Islam in India through conversions, if Indian politics is under constant fire from Muslims. While Hindu attention is fixed on Islam, Christianity conquer India. Religion is Majhab a set of do's and dont's whereas Dharam is a sanksrit word that translates to duty or conscious decisions made for better purpose. Get the difference between both. The expert - whoever he was - was visibly nettled by the directness of the question asked in the caption. And like many Western academics, he went on to pontificate quite unnecessarily on "semitic". The word semitic doesn't have a fixed meaning in all disciplines. Linguistic, history of religions etc. Swami Vivekananda in one of his lectures divides the world religions in two categories: aryan and semitic. And there is no confusion about his distinction. The person clearly failed to answer the question for he chose to be politically correct rather than to be intellectually honest, a failing of many in the Western academia and world at large.

My heart cries when I talk to an Indian and find out after few words he or she has no clue about the most basic sanskrit terms or concpets from Vedas or sanatana dharma in general. To find out this individual had been brought up as a Christian or accepted Christianity... Why is this happening??? Not necessarily against Christianity as such, but it has its place in middle east. I will answer it to you, first of all it is the muslims which are given duty to preach and talk to the people of the book. Second people are more interested in islam. Third hindus do not debate with muslims cause they cant support their arguments from reference as there is no clear guidance. It is just made up by people furthermore there are lot of contradiction in your scripture. Last but not least, you cant find hinduism to be true, it is not taken as a religion but either some tradition of your forefathers. More and more hindus ate basically atheist or christians. They even dont know about scripture.

This video is not an effective use of your time if you’re really curious about the video topic. But in general it is an interesting video about misconceptions about Hindu perspective and desire to decouple Islam, Christianity and Judaism.

"Hindhuism" is not a religion. At best it is a collection of many different religious beliefs with some common characteristics like for example idol worship. There is no common prophet or holy text or rules. Different groups called "castes" behave as individual religions with strict ban on intermarriage. Even the groups have separate places for cremation and some cases places for worship.Some considers themselves as superior to others. Comparing this groups with organized modern religions like Christianity or Islam is comparing "apple to oranges".

It's 4 basic tenets are: • DHARMA- The path of Righteousness, meaning, one needs to help others, follow your path to bliss and dedicate your entire life to equality. Dharma differs according to your own profession also visa vis Doctor, Lawyer, Carpenter, Mother, Father, etc. • ARTHA- One's goal, essence of life, prosperity, etc • KAMA- Lust, desire, wants, which need to be overcome • MOKSHA- The ultimate liberation from the cycle of life and death. Now, we have various ways of attaining "Moksha" aka liberation from this life. The ways are: • Karma Yoga- The path of selfless action(You are entitled to your works, not the fruits) • Raja Yoga- It is the path of "Yoga" and meditation, which requires strict following of a pure life of meditation and exercises. • Jnana Yoga- It is the path of selfless knowledge. One gains knowledge, spiritual and others to escape the cycle of birth and death. • Bhakti Yoga- It is the path of devotion to the Supreme God in any form. So, it's not a set of dogmas, rituals only, it says us to attain liberation, freedom from this "Moh and Maya" aka the materialistic world👍🕉️

One needs to maintain celibacy and prevent from being diving into the sexual desires for a period of 12 years. Then only one can increase one's power of brain. • Grihasthashram- This means the membership of society. One married, leads a happy and married life. One's aim is to provide all the happiness to their parents, wife, children and help others. • Vanaprastha Ashram- This again means the social work, helping others, equality and no discrimination. Renouncing this materialistic world, etc. • Sanyasashram- This is the last "Ashram" or the stage of Hinduism. One renounces the materialistic world and goes for searching the absolute truth, that supreme God and again devotes to help others and make this society a better living.

It's completely fine to use semitic/Abrahamic to group Judaism/Christianity/Islam. They share the same concept, are roughly from the same area, and have the same figures. Koenraad is trying to mould the Indian usage of the word 'semitic' to the historical Western definition, which is not useful as words change meaning. He is also visibly distressed at the idea of Abrahamic as a grouping, and for some reason states that the Jewish/Christian/Muslim God is different without giving any reason other than huffing and puffing. This is palpably false. He simply wants Hindus to spare Christianity from the same kind of focus they have for Islam.

Answer is simple. New,unknown and strange things were always hated. Nehru in college in england wrote'"while the short , dark indian boys studied silently,dressed in dhothis , prayed and stayed away from girls and parties ,the tall and fair,western dressed ,outgoing pakistani boys partied hard and mingled well with english. Indian tolerance and non judging character was not obvious underneath their conservative attitude. Neither was islamic fanaticism and hatred obvious underneath pakistani's friendly and political correct attitude

One of the reasons could be that Hindu refused to call themselves as a religion but a way of life. This has arisen due to necessity of collective sects post rise of Buddhism and trying to establish Hindu as religion but hesitancy existed due difference in various sects and group followers of common God like Shiva and Vishnu and many more gods and goddesses of tribes. So it is difficult to point out a single common thread in Hinduism. Only rise of Hindutva further complicated not relation with Islam and Christianity but also different sects, Aryan and Dravid.

If guided by their faith in Christianity that led them to such barbaric actions in India , then Islam is very similar to Christianity. Hinduism is Self respect for our soul and that of Others. Dr Eldst, I would take you back many centuries to the Median Prophet Zarathushtra who was the first of the prophets to teach monothheism and aniconic ideas which the people accepted over pressing opposition. In fact Judea came across monotheists after contact with the Parsa King Cyrus who returned all the treasurers to the Judeas and even sponsored the building of Solomon's Temple. AND Zarathustra has no concept of evil, as He speaks ofbthe crwation of two spirits translated as Life and No life. Suggest you study the ancient Vedic and Avesta texts to understand an iota of the far more ancient, for a better word, religion of the true Aryas.

He picked up a word semetic and lectured on that while the question was why western universities are pro islamic and hate Hinduism. He just deflected the question by weaving academic complexities around a word used in the question. Also we should not be fascinated by what western universities think. We have to build our own perspective based on our vedic philosophy about ourselves vis a vis other organised religions that are so unbelievably naive in believing that there is only 1 god that they believe in. Even if that is true, that same God made people who don't believe in their theory. So what right they get to call them wrong and either convert or persecute them?

I came here to learn and didn't hear anything answered regarding the question. Instead, it was some walkabout on some historical perspectives. Not sure if it was being deliberately sidelined or he just lost his way in his own thoughts and past scholarship. Either ways, I was utterly disappointed. It was a v. imp question and a completely irrelevant answer. I think the interviewer tried bringing him on track, but being a polite and respectful person, didn't push it all that much.

Western bourgeoise is too fast and sharp. Asians are barely able to howsoever reach near him. But it is strange that Congressmen who were educated in the western universities and supposed to represent the caste Hindus of those days could never understand this ground reality and challenged and competed with him unnecessarily and rhus brought doom to the erstwhile caste Hindus.
