A tip for small plots of corn (mine is 4' x 8'), I will go around the entire plot and lightly shake the tassels to dislodge the pollen then I use my DeWalt DCE100 blower set on the lowest setting and once again go around the plot and blow the pollen off of the leaves (Blowing the pollen toward the center of the plot). This creates a nice cloud of pollen, ideal for a small plot. I repeat the process about every 2 to 3 days, it has worked well for me.

This is a great Idea! Thanks for the tip! I also have a 4' x 8' plot of corn. Last summer I fit 2 dozen in there (4 rows of 6). How many are you able to grow comfortably in a 4' x 8' plot?

Thank you...I learned a lot. I am assuming you are located in a warm state. I am in western Montana and the planting times a a little different. I had poor pollination this year (2021). It was an especially hot year. We get a lot of wind and I have rich soil so I am trying to figure why the pollination was so bad. I think as you suggested that the timing was off. I think it tasseled before the silk came on. Wondering if this could be heat stress. Great video.

Good looking corn. Forgive me if you have already answered this question in a previous video and I missed it. We are in South Alabama (Roll Tide) 8B zone. Can we plant a second crop of corn and potatoes or is it just too hot here?

We planted a second crop a few weeks ago. We have many customers who succession plant corn all throughout the warm growing season. Just gotta make sure you've got good irrigation and feed it well as it is going to grow much faster when those heat units start cranking.

Wait until the tassels are fully open and beginning to shed the yellow pollen. You can begin pollination as soon as the silk emerges.

Hello I planted 60 peachesmonster and sweet mix the plants are 6-7 foot they have monster stalk diameter at base larger than golf ball deep green healthy looking plants my tassels are just about up on all my plants but i dont have any silks/ears forming yet is that ok is it to early or is somthing wrong? this is my first time growing corn
@gardeningwithhoss
@gardeningwithhoss Жыл бұрын
After corn silks are fertilized by the tassels at the top of the stalk, they'll shrivel up as the ears mature. This happens about three weeks after the silks form. The corn kernels become ripe just about the same time as the silks become brown and shriveled. There are different maturity groups in corn, i.e. different varieties require different length of time from plant emergence to tasseling, and ultimately pollination and ear growth.

How do I know when to pick the corn this is the first time I have ever grown it
@gardeningwithhoss
@gardeningwithhoss Жыл бұрын
For sweet corn, it is when the silks turn brown, dry, and shriveled. Use your fingernail to puncture a kernel. The liquid inside is going to tell you a lot about your timing. If the liquid that comes out is very clear and watery, they're not ripe yet. If you can see through the liquid and yet it looks milky, the corn is perfect for picking.

Also I REALLY don't know how to water the corn as most newbies don't know what an inch of water a week means. Some websites say the roots are 6' under ground and some say they're shallow so I've watered too much and not enough.. I'm sure. I don't know what fertilizer to use and websites give all this contradictory information (I have no other yard space either so I need to replant in the same spot next year and desire a way to build the Nutrients back up before replanting) so scared as it seems no one's been responding to their videos posts.

At about 3 minutes into the video he starts saying things that I have no idea what they mean (hilling up). My plot is about 8 x 20 and I currently have 70 stalks remaining as the squirrels or bunnies ate them up in the beginning. I don't know what hilling up your corn means but they are a short variety and the websites say to plant rows 2-3' apart with corn 12" apart but he said 4".
