Another reason is likely the late January release; that's typically a dump period for movies, so one with a 200M price tag shouldn't have been reasonably expected to break bank.

@@BaithNa They can sell a few Vision Pros and be back to mega-profitable in no time. In fact I'm sure the launch of the device more than made-up for Apple's spending on this film. As for "theatre-going is expensive." That's why most cinemas (at least in Canada) offer a rewards system. I saw Argyle, it was a fun turn your brain off and just watch kind of film but I'm glad I used Scene+ points to see it for free.

You're right, but they tried doing that with Babylon last year. Brad Pitt was prominently displayed in all of the trailers yet was only in the movie for about 10 minutes. It was the very vague trailers that didn't really specify what the movie was about that caused it to tank. (BTW, it was a period piece about the tail end of the silent movie genre in Hollywood and the people making those movies.)

I loved Bullet Train and this looked like it was the same genre, so I went to see it--and it was! That's what my sister and I thought when we saw the trailer for the first time! We would have gone to see Argylle because we loved seeing Bullet Train, but we got slammed with a couple of life events that left us pretty broke. Which is, honestly, something that the people at WC need to start considering when it comes to "why something 'bombed.'" Like, it premiered when a lot of people were broke? The holidays just happened?

The marketing campaign, laughably, was to show us Henry Cavill in a bad haircut dancing with Dua Lipa, but netiher character is in the film collectively for 15 minutes. Hannibal Lecter is said to have been on-screen for a total of like 16 minutes, but that was successful because they had 1) a good script and 2) good actors and 3) a fleshed-out concept. This was obviously rushed and trusted to someone who could clearly not pull anything off in the manner that they anticipated.

The biggest problem with the Streaming companies releasing films in cinemas is, as you said, the speed they come to the streaming platform. In the UK alone Apple TV + has around 2 million subscribers (based on the most recent figures I could find which are a year old) paying £8.99 per month and this doesn't even take into consideration the 1 month free trial. With an average UK cinema ticket price (2023) of £7.69 that's over £30 for a family of 4 to watch the movie and this is before the cost of travel, parking, snacks etc which easily can top £50. Add this to the changes in Cinema Audience Etiquette, why would you pay over 10 times the amount of the subscription for something you could watch a month later and may or may not enjoy.

When I was in uni in the early '90s, it was about a year between when movies left the theatre and when they came out on VHS, and then most new release videos cost in the $80-$100 range, so a lot of people couldn't afford them. There was a movie theatre near my school that's entire business model was showing movies that had left the theatre but hadn't come out on video yet. It was two movies for $5, a different double bill every night. Plus the concessions were cheap. The place was always packed with students. (I lost track of how many classes I skipped to be there.) There's a lot to be said about leaving more time between theatrical and streaming/video release to create multiple waves of anticipation.

This is the way. Entertainment is so subjective. It's so difficult to have reviews be meaningful when they're all really about algorithm, clicks, anger farming, and being paid advertising. Even rando social media reviews by nobodies have their own angle. Watch the trailer, look at the cast and crew, make your own determination. Allow yourself to enjoy movies for the sake of them being entertaining. Not everything has to be a a masterpiece of cinema or high brow top shelf in the genre they're a part of. And...some people just want to criticize because they get a bigger dopamine hit out of that than just...having fun with a silly action spy comedy.

Studios need to scale back their expectations to realistic levels and theaters need to make it worth it for me to leave the house to sit next to some rando too stupid to pick a seat in the empty row and not right next to me and the 4 seats of my family. Argylle was a fun, silly at times, action comedy spy flick. It had awesome fight choreography, and bright saturated visual flair. The cast was great and despite the CGI not being "OMG I'm going to die because the effects are so top shelf" - I could accept that because not everything needs to be the best of the best of the best snooty elite level. I'd like to be able to LIKE MOVIES without having to make each out to be masterpieces. Also. I feel like certain viewers whose whole personalities were developed around "Release the Snyder Cut!" might be feeling emotion damage because their man crush of choice, He-Man Henry, was not in every other scene. This travesty of Henry taking back seat to Sam Rockwell (a GEM) and Bryce Dallas Howard (a GURL) may have twisted some knickers.

I wanted to just sit back and watch a fun film, not necessarily a comedy and I did not need to see lots of blood and gore, I usually do not count blood and gore as an actual draw to a film although it does not repulse me either. Movies just flop. Honestly, with streaming and home media being what it is, people simply aren’t going to go through the trouble of going to the movies for so-so flicks. That’s why Oppenheimer and Barbie were the juggernauts they were. They were events. They were spectacles. That’s what gets people to the movies. In this day and age, if a movie is going to succeed, advertisements essentially need to be “you HAVE to see this movie! Right f’n now!” if the flick really wants to see a box office result.

The combination of clear oversaturation, but also that by in large the world if cinema clearly hasn't fully recovered from the effects on movies and movie releases from COVID, or the two strikes of last year. Paired with younger movie goers needing instant gratification and knowing in a lot of cases give a movie a month and it will be on streaming. Granted movie quality still is huge but in ten to fifteen years..... Be interesting to see what the history books say so to speak

The movie is pure joy. Not the best from Matthew Voughn but still is better than most of the so called blockbusters in the recent months and even years. And yes, it's maybe more suitable for streaming but nevertheless it is a very enjoyable two-hour flick to watch. Even though Samuel Jackson is not dead in the end and Bryce Dallas Howard has lost her abilities to run in high heels.

I think it's so sad this movie didn't do well since I just watched it with my friend and it was really fun. It was refreshing to see a movie and just have fun watching it. People seemed to not like the plot twists, I liked them. There were tons of hints that I had pointed out which made them more satisfying when they happened. I was genuinely engaged until the end.

I did not witness the full trailers much at all, but every arm of the marketing was completely different on every medium- some ads only focused on the cat in the bag, some social media ads only feature Henry and Dua, others just had the Bryce Dallas/Rockwell. It told you nothing of the entire picture of the film or the tone of it.

So, even though the film has a "rotten" 34% score at "Rotten Tomatoes," right beside that score is the AUDIENCE score which was a very respectable 71%. Maybe we should ask the people who watched the film and gave it that decent, not-so-shabby score why they liked it when it was such a "flop."

I actually saw it yesterday and i like it. It's different because nowadays everybody see movies in a critical eyes and take things too serious. And movies always sending you political or too many agenda. Just because we know names of actor. Producer and expect something or because it's not a ground breaking storyline. Doesn't mean it can't be fun. Personally, i like it so much. All i know i filled with so much awe and endorphins when i left the theater.. But i found it so much entertaining..

Counterpoint: given that we know the audience score is subject to being ratings-bombed (either to boost or depress a score) we should recognize the audience score for the garbage it is and put MORE weight on the professional reviews.

They tried to recapture everything that made the original Kingsman so great, and it was absolutely terrible. Sam Rockwell was the only positive in the film. Bryce Dallas Howard was not good in the lead nor believable for the character… that knife skating in oil scene was absurd.

Henry Cavill as a spy was a major reason why I was interested in it in the first place, despite knowing he wasn't the main character. When it was revealed in reviews that he is barely in the movie, I lost interest. I also felt like it was a bait and switch considering how prominently he was featured in the marketing campaign.

When the movie was announced, it suggested this would have been an alternative James Bond with Cavill as a leading man. Once the synopsis and Trailer dropped I realised it was a predictable by the numbers action comedy that had more to do with Romancing the Stone and I was able to guess Henry Cavill, John Cena and Dua Lipa would barely been in the movie. This bait and switch on plot also confused audiences who would have to rely on reviews to make the decision to watch. The deal with Apple also meant that viewers could just wait for it to appear on streaming than fork out going to the cinema.

To me, fantasy is not just television. Cinema has a place for the genre too. Fantasy books have the right to exist as movies whether people like it or not. It has a right to be made. I care. Books can be done anyway it wants to become. Mistborn has the potential and right to be made as a film. I don't want any "no, buts, why, or how dare they you!" stuff. It has to happen, it needs to happen. I had enough of this nonsense and nitpicking. That was a few years ago! Yet, people are still doing this. This needs to stop! Deal with it. Times are always changing. Earthsea would have better as a film series instead. I am okay if there are deviations and cut out some plot points alike. Too many subplot points can also may story convoluted and confusing too. Keep very little subplots while keeping the main plot intact. That is my idea of doing book adaptations as films and tv shows. Fantasy still has a place for cinema, not just tv. It better have a right to exist in the first place.

PG-13 movies are not always tame. Look at The Dark Knight Returns, The Dark Knight Trilogy, LOTR, and Batman V Superman, Dawn of Justice. PG-13 movies aren't always sqeaky clean and family friendly. They can sometimes contain graphic and mature themes at times.

I saw it this weekend. The first 2/3 of the movie was ok. Even with the Henry Cavill bait and switch. But the last third just goes off the rails. IF you see it, you'll know what I am talking about. Its a stark turn into the absurd. It can't be missed. Not to mention the 2.5 hour run time. So a 5 out of 10 at best.
