Let's talk about why why becoming a doctor is a bad idea. Many people think becoming a doctor leads to financial success, BUT I will outline why that's not true. This video is not meant to discourage you but to show you why medical school is overrated, if you watch this whole thing and are still passionate about becoming a doctor then I am positive med school is for you!!

► Doctor Stress Study: www.mdvip.com/about-mdvip/blo...
► 2019 Medical School Debt Report: weatherbyhealthcare.com/blog/...
You have seen my videos on if is premed worth it, but the The question on many students minds, is still medical school worth it? Everyone knows about the loans and stress, but does that pay off? If all you want Is money, then you better look for something else but if your number one passion is helping patients and you don't care about the money AT ALL then becoming a doctor may we worth it for you. Here is why becoming a doctor is a bad idea.
The first reason why becoming a doctor isn't worth it is because of stress and work life balance. Doctors are actually not paid a higher rate than the average American. they just work significantly more hours, which is why doctors get paid so much.
Second, med school reality is that you have facing a HUGE opportunity cost. By becoming a doctor you miss out on 10 years of potential income, the total opportunity cost can reach 1 million dollars. That's something many people overlook and why being a medical doctor is overrated.
The third reason why becoming a doctor is a bad idea is because of medical school loans. But is med school worth the debt? After all you get paid so much. Despite the pay many doctors struggle to pay off their medical school debt, you really have to make sacrifices. If you think the salary justifies the amount of debt that's not the case. Med school debt is a huge proportion of your salary.

Something important to learn if you become a doctor or nurse is that you never lose a life. It was meant go since the beginning and you tried to stop it, but it was inevitable. And yes to the comment on top. That is why you should become a doctor for passion and no money. Some people are born this way and experience shock or stress, but not trauma out of that.

Honestly I’ve been battling my parents about this everyday. I’m a nurse and they keep telling me to go to medical school just because they’re friends kids are doctors. My dad keeps bringing it up and he can’t even give me a legit reason why I should be doctor. I dont think most pre med students realize how difficult it is to get into the top specialites either. First off only 37% of applicants make it into medical school. Of those who graduate and become physicians less than 10% will get into the illustrious top specialties like sports medicine, cardio surgery, neurosurgery etc. Most 50-60% will be internal medicine, pediatrics, emergency med, hospitialist, psychiatrist will make from 150-300. Keep in mind that they will also be graduating with 250-350k in loans not including interest. Medicine is not the fantasy you see on television

My best friend has her mind set on studying medicine just because her parents said it's more "practical" for her to do that so that she lives a "comfortable," life. They were unhappy when she said that she wanted to study writing and/or music. They were able to convince her to become a neurosurgeon anyways with the argument that "they make a lot of money." She clearly isn't passionate about medicine. She doesn't even like science or math. She would say how she didn't understand 10th grade chemistry and wasn't the best in middle school and high school math. I just don't want her to go to school for something she is not passionate about. She says she's gonna go through with medicine to buy a 5 million dollar townhouse in NYC. She has very unrealistic expectations at times and I want to help her out, not to discourage her, but try to sway her in the direction of doing something she's truly passionate about doing. Can you help me out? Do you have any tips for a situation like this?

Dear neet aspirants don’t get demotivated by seeing videos of doctors who say they get low salaries, high stress etc Every job in the world has their own type of stress,pressure etc . No job in the world will make you rich . Whether you are a doctor or engineer or management professional you can’t become rich by doing the job alone. By doing a job you get average stable income which is very important To become rich you start doing buisness or investing or trading along while working as a doctor Their is no way you will become rich (I mean ex: you can ride a bmw/Porsche instead of Maruthi) other than by doing buisness, trading or investing But it’s riskier to start buisness or investing before you get a job. So work hard to get a job then think ways to become rich. By working as a doctor you can do service and get social status/respect( which is very important and difficult to get from other jobs) By doing buisness or investing you can become rich Always be happy and enjoy the journey😊

I have to disagree right off the bat. Money does matter. It's not the number one thing but if they could pay doctors less they would. You can love your work but only the pay increase for more work makes people doctors and not nurses/PAs. It's similar work but the question is would you rather do more and get paid more or not. Therefore, the salary and money is an important factor for those going into medicine as told to me by 90% of the doctors I have met. Money shouldn't be all but it is definitely important.
@Ella-Elj

Agreed! It’s also just a function of finances. In the US med school costs a LOT, so it wouldn’t be realistic to become a doctor if the salary didn’t pay off. Even if you love the job, few people would be willing to pursue it if the salary didn’t pay off.

The average salary being 70k which really equates to 56,000 after taxes and subtracting all living expenses such as insurances, utilities, mortgages, etc you may be able to save 10-20k a year meaning you won't be able to save money to spend for yourself until 11-22 years after graduating...

With the 4.7 million total earnings figure, that equates to about 134k per year. As far as I know, no physician, even a primary care physician makes that little. It's insane how anyone would want to become a Doc anymore. Lots of useless school, everyone learns better on the job. I've heard from lots of Docs that their learning didn't start until residency. Then like you said, they work an insane amount of hours, I work with Docs every day and lots of them don't even get full days off they spend part of their off days charting. Then all of the student dept. Our education system needs major change. With the help of Technology and developing apprenticeship programs like residency there's no reason why it could take less than 4 years to become a regular primary care doc.

Not true. The human body is a very, very complex machine, there's 7 billion of them and they all behave differently. The first 5 years of medicine is needed for you to acquire the gigantic amount of theoretical knowledge about every single aspect of the human body, from the biophysics of electrolite pumps, to the function of cytochromes, through every single structure that every single nerve, muscle and bloodvessel goes through, what it crosses and what it passes, to the treatment of early onset dementia and the red tape regarding drug refundation. It's not IT, where you basically need to know nothing before you start working, and there are no stakes because what you do isn't really meaningful - you need to understand how and why EVERYTHING works in this machine before you even touch it. That's why it takes so long, because it's tens of thousands of pages of information that you have to be able to access in your brain at any given time, or you won't understand how to treat an ailment, why the drug didn't work, what can be the adverse effect, what to do next. And yeah, by comparison, every other job is easier to learn and requiring less intellect than medicine. The GP has an ocean of information to navigate, and learning this job cannot take 4 years. It's not being a potato salesman.
@DropoutJerome
@DropoutJerome 2 жыл бұрын
@@beabea5985 1. Tech is progressing substantially, AI is already helping providers with medical decisions. 2. Our education system is set up by cramming as much info as it can into our heads by having us memorize text books, that's not learning hence many providers don't start learning until residency, until then you're jumping through hoops. I work along side providers and a main stream EMR every day as a clinical informatics analyst, I've spoken with many caregivers on this subject. Main consensus is that caregivers don't start learning until they're on the job through residency, clinicals, etc. I didn't start learning my job until I was thrown into the fire. Many providers today are practicing without knowing every single little thing about their specialty, shit I've walked in on providers looking procedures up on YT to learn how to do something before they do the procedure themselves. Or using applications like Up to date on how to treat something. Not saying to totally get rid of college or med school and go straight to apprenticeship programs, but school needs a huge overhaul because again, 90% of it is totally worthless outside of the academia bubble.

@beabea5985
@beabea5985 2 жыл бұрын
Nope. Take it from someone who used to be a doctor in Europe - the pay is incredibly measly, the lawsuits are on the rise, and now that the pandemic is in full bloom, they frequently get harassed and even assaulted by patients, plus property damage and the fact that some governments make the medical workers the number one enemy of society and solely blame them for mishandling the pandemic - and you've got your answer. Do not do it. It's an ungrateful, humiliating job that, unlike, say IT, will always require you to have almost no self respect and force you to be around unwashed, smelly, sick people, many of who hate you right away and would love nothing more than to watch you fail. You will also be forced to watch as your childhood friends make more money off their dumbass TikToks than you just did resuscitating a newborn. Please, don't do it. It shaves years off your life, years that nobody's gonna give you back. I became a graphic designer and have never looked back since.

3:43, your explanation here doesnt make sense to me, your saying a doctor has to put in twice as many house, but they are making twice as much! So a doctor could work half as much and make as much as a teacher. 143k for 4.7m 77k for 2.3m Your hourly comparison makes no sense.

Being a doctor is not a perfect field. It has some prime characteristic p, with some element failing to have a p-th root. Being a mathematician, on the other hand, is a perfect field.

In the European union becoming doctor is just 6 years after highschool and in my country (Bulgaria) medical school is super cheap not anithyng like america people all around the world come here to study here so you are not right it is absolutely worth it nkt to mention that surgical specialties are hell bettter paid than you said.

American doctors get paid much more than Europe doctors. Their lifetime earnings far surpass non-US doctors. There’s a small delay because of the student loans but after they’re paid off, their earnings far exceed foreign physicians.

There’s more to life than money and status. Surgeons are burned out, work long hours, and had to commit so many years of schools and training. Only to not have much time for themselves and for their family. What’s the point of money if you can’t enjoy it? Only do this if you can’t see yourself doing anything else. Being a surgeon is for someone who’s willing to sacrifice their own personal life for the lives of others. Young naive people chase money and status. Older people realize that family and happiness are most important. When you get older and wiser you’ll understand.

The title 'IS MED SCHOOL WORTH IT" sums up why the healthcare system in the U.S. sucks and most doctors these days misdiagnose and are incompetent. I'm not even listening to the video because if someone is becoming a doctor just for money then you shouldn't have become a doctor in the first place. Playing around with peoples health for your personal gain is tragic.

FOR EVERY CHECK, TAKE SOME MONEY AND INVEST IT IN STOCK MARKET. USE THE DIVIDEND TO INCREASE YOUR SALARY FORGET ABOUT COMPOUND INTEREST! Take the money out! PAY YOUR TAXES ON IT AND elevate your feet! REPEAT THIS PROCESS. You can not stop a resident or doctor from making more income. Let them go and elevate their feet. Let the money work overtime and long hours; not you.
