After leaving the military I joined a bike club. When you first join you start as prospect, where they look at you as person, what you have to offer as well as is that club for you. It’s hard work prospecting and it takes a year to 18months to earn the right to wear the patches - that’s why in a nutshell you don’t wear the patch unless you’ve earned it and will likely see you getting it removed at the very least if you wear it when you shouldn’t! I spent over 10 years in the club, but ended up having leave due to work commitments though I’m still on good terms and visit when I can. Great times and great video

I agree and was looking for this post. What I wanted to mention is that you only get a bottom rocker as a prospect, the top rocker and patch is when you become a “full patch” member. The OP mentions I believe, only a top and no bottom rocker, when it’s the other way around. There are three bottom rockers: city/town, county/country, or Nomad. If I’m not mistaken, it’s been a while. Good video on clothing and brief history. That one pic with all the beer bottles was staged of course. I don’t think we new media back then like we do now….

Thanks for this episode on biker styling history. In the past few years, the rise in long distance adventure riding, gear has evolved into function over form (so to speak). Safety and functional considerations sometimes don’t always translate into good style, although some European manufacturers manage to balance both.

For my style on a bike in southern nevada it’s a slim 3/4 helmet, leather vest, t shirt, overalls usually hickory stripe but denim as well, western style work boots, leather gloves. In the winter I’ll throw a denim jacket under the vest. I have several very expensive full face helmets but they all make you look like a bobble head and for me they are claustrophobic and most the year just too hot and stuffy in southern nevada heat.

He said it, but I'll say it again due to how important it is. If you don't understand it, do not put it on your body. Wearing a 3 piece, an MC cube, a 1% diamond and to the right club member who's trying to either defend his clubs name or make a reputation for himself, pretty much anything from his world you don't know, this can you kicked off your bike or worse. The most important word to members: respect. Wearing what you do not know is taken as disrespect. I've equated it to stolen valor in the past. Moreover, if you're not a bandido, why would you want to wear their colors anyway? . Lastly, a 1%er once said, "you can wear anything you want if your balls are big enough" Be careful out there. If you don't know about club life, it's best not to represent yourself like you're affiliated

@bullast2046 Yeah ink as in tattoos, I'm a tech contractor so I can get away with it professionally and I plan to keep going with adding to my collection. Now put me in jeans and a hoody and it looks fine.. same with most "street clothes". But I do quite like a lot of the clean-cut suit looks, a lot of the "old money" styles also. Fortunately, all my ink is black and grey so it's just tweaking these styles to complement the ink and not hard contrast it. For example, if you look at a lot of the 1920s hipster styles and how that scene has got it to work well with ink. I'd like to do the same, but not be stuck to tweed and suspenders all year round 😂

I’m a firm believer if you’re a biker and aspiring to join a club just know patches are earned and never bought. Some people in clubs take offense and will even G check you. So I would say leave your SOA cut or lone wolf eBay specials home if you’re riding in club territory. But if you just got random patches like band logos or locations you rode that you put on your cut most clubs won’t even bother you. And when coming to a club member never put your hands on the club colors some might take it as a sign of disrespect as well. But for the most part most outlaw bikers are actually down to earth people who just love to bullshit as much as the next person. So don’t let their reputation feel like you can’t come say hi and introduce yourself unless they are handling club business. Give respect to get respect.

Patches are real simple. If you aren't in a club, organization or whatever else, don't wear em. Its safer that way. I think the rise of sport bikes in the late 80's and early 90's are what made helmets and gear cool and common. Racers had to use it and everyone wanted to look like they were a racer on the road so they wore the gear and it started to rub off into the rest of the biker world.

Just to add to what you said about patches, my understanding is that the three piece configuration is mainly used by outlaw clubs. Non-outlaw, "family clubs" more frequently use a one or two piece design. And yeah, the 1% diamond is pretty closely associated with outlaw clubs as well. As a rule, it's a good idea to avoid any patches that might make people think you're in a club. Outlaw clubs basically act as sheriffs within the biker world, and might pull you over for a chat if they spot you. That includes overly realistic Sons Of Anarchy merch, which people have actually gotten confronted over.
@forgedglory

Nope. The one patch set up is very old school 1%er. The number of patches don’t really matter anymore. It’s what the patches say that matter and what the club is all about that matters. There are Christian clubs that use the 3 piece set up.

@@Anthropomorphic most clubs today, both 99% and 1% have 3 piece patches. I only know of a few clubs that have just one patch anymore, and they are all 1%ers except for one that is a Christian club. It’s not so much about the patch set up it’s about territory claims and what the club is all about.

I relate to this on a really high level lol. I'm a young rider, my uncle is the founding father to a motorcycle club that I won't be naming for the sake of privacy. I often ride with them, and I remember the very first time I step my foot into the community of motorcycle clubs. We started at the basecamp, rode to a cafe where we met with 2-3 other motorcycle clubs. We had the whole cafe for ourself for the whole night, somebody probably made a deal of some sort. Anyway, I was clueless, everybody emptied up the center part of the cafe. I actually can sit wherever I like since I got my uncle as the founding father but I'm a junior there, so I did what everybody else did and sit on the side part of the cafe. All the founding fathers and presidents sat on the center part where they talked about certain stuff, planned something, all the stuff that the seniors usually do basically. Then I saw on the outside of the cafe, there's the lower ranking members with denim vests, unlike the leathers that we wore. They're tasked to watch the motorcycle and the surroundings. That's when I knew the whole biker clubs thing is no joke. We rode all around town till 4 A.M. Then I slept on my uncle's house. I rode a GSXR1000 K1, that night. Spectacular bike. While my uncle rode his honda shadow 1100.

He rode a Honda Shadow in an MC? I've never heard of such a thing. Usually the rule is you must ride American which for the most part makes it exclusively Harleys. Some Indians nowadays, and some Victory's if you were cool with having your balls busted for it all the time haha. Gotta be over 1000cc, but you also caught some flak for rid8ng 1200 sportsters (which is what I rode for awhile). But maybe being a founder gives you certain privileges, or it was an RC and not MC. Riders clubs have much less stringent rules on what you ride.

One of the worst things about “biker style” is the stigma that sometimes comes with wearing gear. 1) helmet always (personal opinion: only full face acceptable) 2) jacket/riding pants/boots aren’t only for scaredy cats. Two of my biggest regrets from my time riding are wrecking and not wearing full gear even though i have it. At the time of my accident, i only had a helmet and gloves to protect me (and the good man upstairs)

I'm a rider and my style is pretty much defined by my moto gear. riding jeans, boots, leathers, ; it's just convenient for me and it works.

I ride with a “no” patch motorcycle club. No issues ever that I know of. I also dress for the slide, not the ride. Helmet, gloves, boots, jacket and good attitude.

The style now is bulky textile waterproof, airbag vests gauntlet gloves that have external exo skeleton on the fingers and casual urban icon motorcycle hoodies for young riders. Full face helmets looking like a storm trooper like the youthful Ruroc brand

I don't know usually their behind me cause they all ride harelys ,I do know this though they hate being passed and will try to catch up to you but the only time I was caught up to was at a gas station and they asked me if I was in a hurry ,I replied with I get 20 miles to the gallon if I'm lucky and every fuel stop counts.

I ride Indian chief motorcycles I'm in My 40s and love that 40s 50s aviator / Marlon Brando Elvis style. I love avirex bomber jackets. I own quite a few some with pin up girl in the back of the jacket's. Very vintage replica from the o.g. my favorite is My B3 with the sheep fur collar. I have quite a few 80s vintage biker jackets & Indian leather jackets. I own 5 bike's 😎 live to Ride Ride to live!👍

I have seen people die from wearing a full face helmet. A turtle is the best thing for visibility and will still save you in a crash. You have to see and hear what is around you at all times

For next year I want to rock the cowboy punk style, Since these wide legs pants came back into fashion, and the biker thing has re-emerged with the next movie The Bikeriders, I predict that this will be a trend for 2024

I think once your not trying to be somthing your not you should be ok. The 1%er thing should of been taken on by all bikers as a solidarity thing but its gaurded now and dont get caught wearing it unless your in a "outlaw" club. With such strict rules on do's and donts it almost feels like it aligns to the opposite of what its trying to be. Just do your own thing be about the bike and stay away from the group mentallity thats where you will feel the true connection.. man and machine.

Professional motorcycle crasher here. If you care about your quality of life after a crash, get gloves with a plastic/TPU or Superfabric palm slider. I've crashed with and without them and they make the difference between shattering your wrist, snapping an arm and simply dusting yourself off and walking away.

There is written that 2 world war soldiers of flight brigard called hells angels. If they survived, many of them had PTs - psycholocical hurtings. They can't fit in society again and driven around like ascapers. Than the name HA was bouth by young guys in the late 50s like Sunny Barger. They loved chopped there harleys bud not doing 9 -5 and bowling. Many followed them, finding somekind of family order and obidience. Law and order in police, military are the same brotherhood beings. The way of an eagle on street is totally different. Allone, no crime, no drugs, no alkohol, no women, but strong inwards, mature to fullfill his path in peace and politeness, love riding and feeling free in mind and body.
