This is the video cast of the Commune podcast with Jeff Krasno. In this episode, Jeff interviews Doctor Casey Means. Alzheimer’s looks very different from obesity, which we think of as different from stroke, depression, or infertility. But according to Dr. Casey Means, the root cause of our most common chronic diseases can be traced to metabolic dysfunction. In this episode, she and Jeff discuss what your blood sugar is trying to tell you - including the data your doctor is likely not looking for.

I wish I had her in my physiology nutrition class. She presents this info brilliantly! I’m 69. I miss my gall bladder, I practically shot up candy all my youth up to my 50’s. I told a therapist I had an eating problem. She told me sugar over consumption is not an eating disorder. I never told her I was molested by my father and consumed sugar to keep from feeling uncomfortable. My crashes put me in the corner curled up sobbing in my 20’s.

@Casey, I have a question. We are talking so much about insulin resistance and ways to escape that condition. I understand that insulin resistance is followed by Pre-diabetes and then diabetes and this comes to light only after decade or so in our lab tests. However, consider people who are already diabetic or pre-diabetic with a HbA1c > 8, would they still benefit from changing their eating habits (eating fiber, proteins before starches/sugary food), moving after a meal (like a walk or low intensity activity), etc. ?

Excellent narrative of current health paradigm. Another question: I have heard it explained that the Cov 2 virus 'cloaks itself in sugars' to camouflage its presence from the immune system. But, is this really more accurate to suggest that it is opportunistically benefitting immune evasion by becoming glycated by the general hyperglycemia plaguing this state of pathogenic condition? Thus, w/o a glycated environment in the body, the virus would be better detected and dealt with by the immune system?

I am diabetic, been for 8 yrs, and have made significant diet, exercise lifestyle changes toward better health. I have learned on my journey that diet and exercise are not the only things that spike my bs. I have been wanting a cgm, however, my PCP will not prescribe it since I’m “making progress and better than I was”. I was 9.0 and am now 6.4 - still not ideal but continuing to work on it. I eat under 10 net carbs daily and at my ideal weight for my w/h/p. A cgm would help me advocate for my own health when dr’s are dismissive. How can I get one without a prescription??

Pissed that your doc tells you your triglycerides are "in the normal range"? How about when you're sent for an ultrasound of your organs by a specialist, and the radiologist doesn't report that you have fatty liver. The specialist tells you that you are fine. Two months later, after reading a book in order to become less ignorant, you discover a fatty liver discussion, you dial up your specialist and ask if you've got fatty liver, he asks the radiologist, calls you back a few days later, says yes, you've got fatty liver and says nothing else. During these exchanges, you get the sense that he is extremely annoyed by you, the unelightened, not-a-member-of-the-club are wasting his precious time. Angry, I think by myself. Perhaps he is somewhat rational and justified in his feelings...BUT, what else are docs failing to tell me? My confidence and trust in docs shrinks some. I have a screw you too thought, but I still need them. I don't blame docs for not accepting responsibility shoved onto them that shouldn't be, but it works both ways - sauce for the goose, sauce for the gander.

I was first diagnosed as having high liver enzymes about 20yrs ago. Back then, they didn't know about non-alcoholic fatty liver let alone what causes it. My doc asked me if I drank a lot of alcohol. I didn't and he didn't believe me. Kind of ticked me off because I wasn't lying but he thought I was. So I decided that they must have mixed up my lab work with someone else. Later on, another doc told me I had a fatty liver and had regular annual ultrasounds to monitor but never told me much about it. Never told me what caused it or how to fix it. Well I got gastric bypass surgery and lost about 40 lbs. That's it. Most people lose much more. I found I could snack on carbs all day. For about a year I came off most of my meds. But then had to go back on my type 2 diabetes meds. My weight stayed the same for two years. Then it started going up and my A1C was getting worse. So I decided I needed to do something else. So I got into a keto diet. I lost about 12lbs in a week right away. I looked for more video on Keto to learn more and started seeing videos on Carnivore. I decided to try it. Seemed logical. Since then I lost about 20 lbs in about a month and was feeling great. Brain fog gone. Arthritis gone. I was back in the gym lifting weights. My last set of blood labs was great. A1C in the normal range. My doc didn't want to take me off my diabetes meds. Said to wait. He also wanted me to take a statin. My LDL was 110. That used to be fine. Now it's not considered fine. Over 85 gets flagged as high for a diabetic. But my A1C was normal. So we had quite an argument about the statin and I refused to accept it. I asked him to explain why. He finally gave up.

So basically, it all comes down to the ideal physiological balance between energy intake (food), energy utilization (physical activity and mental stress), and energy storage (fat storage). We have the largest direct impact over intake and then activity level. Storage is a byproduct of intake and activity. Intake is a function of the amount (calories) and types of food (does it promote storage as fat and or damage mitochondria).

@@BaneTrogdorno, the worst fat for IR is vegetable/seed oil, such as margarine, canola oil, corn oil, etc. Animal fats and saturated fats are wonderful for health. It’s the sugar that will kill you.

47:15 Although it's true that most of us are not equipped to handle the current food environment, some of us are. If the trend towards more and more processed food in our diet continues, those that can handle it will be more successful, reproductively speaking, and their descendants will dominate the population. So we're actually witnessing evolution right in front of our eyes. And once we realize that processed & high sugar foods are having this impact, by willfully continuing along this path, at some point, we'll essentially be condemning a large fraction of the population to a genetic dead end. I'm not sure this qualifies as genocide, but it's something akin to it. And, of course, the current healthcare system is more than happy to make money off of the illness in the process.

Doctors are so arrogant that they think people are so stupid that they don't know that a diet of candy, fried chicken and white bread isn't good for them.

I wonder what her opinion is of the "Mastering Diabetes" program, which claims to reverse diabetes/metabolic disorder using a very high carb very low fat plant-based diet.

yes, Ive been wondering this too! I think in Mastering Diabetes the strategy is to not start on lots of fruit right away... you have to work up to it first.

You seem to be vilifying "saturated fat". Are you including butter, lard and other animal fats which are now known to be benign? That is such an old refrain that has been totally debunked.

It seems like God created covid to force humans to face their challenges and avoid spiritual bypass. We're all a nodes on the grid of Oneness, and there are so many coping mechanisms that humans are using to avoid facing this fact.
