Brighton Pavilion was the Green Party's only seat won in the 2019 election, but this time the party are hungry for more.
Despite Labour's predicted landslide on Thursday, Brighton Pavilion is a constituency where they're struggling to gain a strong hold of affairs.
We went there to get a flavour of how people are thinking about the election.
Candidates in Brighton Pavilion:
Siân Berry - Green Party
Carl Buckfield - Social Democratic Party
Tom Gray - Labour Party
Mark Francis Mulvihill - Reform UK
Ashley Ridley - Liberal Democrats
Citizen Skwith - The Official Monster Raving Loony Party
AI Steve - Independent
Sarah Victoria Webster - Conservative Party

I wish Green would get as much press as Reform...mainstream media seems to love divisive rhetoric as much as social media but that isnt what society needs or even wants. Most of us would like to get on with each other. Green have integrity but they also gave commob sense policies, fairer tax and honest rhetoric that if we want a better nhs and school system then we need more tax.

National media gives every serious party a nominal amount of coverage. Any additional coverage they get, or coverage from commercial channels comes from what people want. Simply put if you’re making content and a Farage video gets 1 million views and a Green video gets 300 views, Reform is a much better proposition. On the same token much of Farages lobbying and budget goes on media and appearances. He throws press conferences while the greens throw local rallies. Basically the reason he gets so much more coverage is because he works for it and people want to see it. And neither is true of the Greens sadly.

It sounds good in theory but there’s a very strong argument against it. If you have 10 million+ in wealth, you pay a LOT of tax in this country, a lot more than you and I. These people usually contribute financially, charitably and societally in some ways as well. So they currently are of large value to our country as they already pay a significant amount of tax and we depend on them for trickle down economics. Now by taxing them, they go move to Belgium and you lose all of their tax money and everything else they already give, nothing trickles down and you still don’t get your wealth tax. Depending on the value of the people we lose, it soon becomes a loss to introduce this tax. I’m not against wealth taxes but it has to be applied very carefully, fairly and in line with other countries because as I say if that person just moves their money out of this country you get nothing. Same issue with proposed windfall taxes on businesses now. Always another country will offer them a better deal if our tax is too high.
@xneurianx
@xneurianx 6 күн бұрын
@@jaybee4288 Trickle down economics is not a concept that anyone in economics takes even remotely seriously. Wealth tax is aimed as assets. A lot of people with £10m plus have that wealth held up in property. If they don't want to pay a wealth tax on it, they have to sell that property. The property, the actual thing with value, is in the UK. You can't just rip up a London town house and move it to Belgium. The asset changes hands and either someone else buys it and continues to pay the wealth tax. It will shift some homes to people actually living in the UK. I don't see being held hostages by multi-millionaires as a good thing. Let them leave if they want to.
@lonelyone69
@lonelyone69 5 күн бұрын
Because a wealth tax makes little to zero sense in the present state of the economy... It couldn't be used for anything it'd be used to pay off the windfall in bonds coming due. Whether you like it or not the present owners of large swathes of essential British industry are foreign countries and private companies. They own the things, buying back the things is where you start you can't demand something of a market if you own non of the market.

I would like to know why labour are thinking of putting black rock in charge of our vital infrastructure? They’re a private company that puts its investors first. They have a record of not delivering value for money and leaving services worse off. Black rock will privatise Britain with our tax money as a sweetener. I have awful memories of PFI and the overspend that cost the public dearly, paying extortionate amounts to private contractors that built, designed and financed public services like prisons, schools and hospitals before handing them back to the state, often in very bad condition. Big finance plan to own our infrastructure outright to generate profit and steady revenue, that really should belong to the public. We should not tolerate the government handing out public services for privatised infrastructure. Black rock has already bought £1.4 billion of rental homes and non performing mortgages from Vistry in the uk alone. This has delivered higher rents and displacement of lower income tenants. There’s already been big pushback against institutional landlords from Copenhagen to Berlin, Dublin and Madrid. The state should be building new public housing not black rock. This investment by black rock also makes it much harder to bring public goods back into public ownership and allows private finance to tighten its grip on the social contract with citizens to become the ultimate arbiter of climate, energy and welfare politics which will have profound distributional, structural and political consequences. Black rock has already lobbied heavily against fossil fuel regulation it is highly likely that our future energy costs could spiral under black rock and could embolden anti green movements that tie into authoritarian and right wing politics. Labour need to answer these questions and I come at this as someone who’s father was a die hard labour supporter in the 70s and 80s. We need to plan creatively for the future and not let private investment suck public money from our trough like pigs. Edit I have really really over simplified some of this so it’s easier to understand, but believe it that black rock are financial investment company behemoth that is not good for uk citizens and not good for humanity. They are parasites that will leave us all much much worse off globally as well as domestically. We should be fighting tooth and nail to stop them. Spread the word…. Thank you!

@@mikesully110 I think that all parties in power are put into this position. Some will willingly accept it and some might not have a choice due to the amount of money it will cost us all to dig ourselves out of the hole the Tories have left us in. Labour are looking to plug that gap but asking parasites like black rock to step in and stump up the money is completely the wrong way to go about it. We need other solutions and we should find the money ourselves, BUT we’re looking at a good few trillion pounds to do it. And the money has to come from somewhere, plugging tax loopholes and getting large corporations like google and Amazon to pay their share will help, but it won’t make up the total. So taxes are going to have to rise. We need to have an honest conversation as a country about how to do this. It’ll take a couple of decades of long term planning. Are we ready for such a difficult task? We have to be for all our futures….

@@jaybee4288 I didn’t say anything of the sort. Don’t put words in my mouth. Perfectly aware what black rock are and what they do thanks. It’s not just labour, the tories are knee deep in them also. Sajid Javid works for them (centrica, which is a black rock owned company for example) and Jeremy Hunt also. So don’t get tribal, this is a national issue that needs addressing. The tories have left the uk broken and bankrupt after 30+ years of selling off public assets until there’s nothing left. Labour had PFI which was a disaster. We either pay more taxes to sort out the mess or have black rock run your life.

The Green Council was something of a disaster for Brighton and the condition of the city has deteriorated rather rapidly in recent years. As much as I liked having Lucas in the Commons, it does feel like something needs to change. Rail prices up, rent prices up, shop closures left and right - it might be nice for the rest of the country that Brighton elects a single Green MP - but is that MP going to do anything for the City itself? Or are we going to be getting questions on international arms sales? Important? Sure - but nothing we've not had before with Lucas and Russel-Moyle. Palestine too is a huge issue for me; we create a huge issue in the Middle East and then just supply munitions to an apartheid state that’s turning Gaza into Dresden? Seriously watch videos on labour committee boards and interviews with those members of staff. Bright, honest, young, and actually empathetic to the working class and yet they either get locked into their rank or hate the position of Prime Minister, MP etc due to the corruption.

I really want to support the Greens but I think they are failing Brighton. There has been an enormous influx of luxury and unaffordable housing being built in the area over the last 5 years. These new builds have starting rents of £1300 for a studio. The city is very run down and yes central government funding cuts have beeen a major issue but so has greens mismanagement of the city.

Rent in Brighton is insane, it's rivalling london prices. Rich londoners are also moving there in droves and pushing out the creatives who've been there for years and make it extremely hard for young people who've either just graduated or want to move there for the arts scene. Most musicians I know who live there have moved to the outskirts, smaller nearby towns or pay London prices for rent without the high wages you get in the capital.

Austerity is an own-goal, thats what the Tories didn't understand. Less money to those in need means less money in circulation, means less spending, means a smaller economy, means the well dries up. It's like clutching at straws where if you try to over control the situation, you only catch a bit. However, less rigidity on spending in the right places, leads to money circulating, landing for a while here, moving on to there, long enough to do its job to permit spending (and a bit of saving too). We work to earn money in order to live apparently but we seem to have forgotten that money has to go to work too. By not using it, it too becomes unemployed. And like the unemployed, it costs money to not employ it. Strange....

A wealth tax above 10mGBP net worth Yes that makes sens to me. I am French (Well ... I do lots of business in UK and half my family is British) and We have it in France and I have to pay it (The threshold is lower, it's called IFI tax and it only concerns real estate holdings) and I think that it is totally fair. All my wealthy friends are afraid of the IFI and talk about it all the time like we live in a communist dictatorship but common...none of us have fled to Singapore or Abudabi, we all end up paying it and it is only fair. I am bemused by the relatively lower level of solidarity in England.

I think Tom Gray would/will make an excellent constituency MP but I think having the Green Party represented in Parliament is very important. If Caroline Lucas was still standing in Brighton Pavilion (and that was where I vote) it would be an easy choice. Lucas has been a decent constituency MP and a good parliamentarian. As it is I would be torn between the two choices and would, with some regret, vote for whoever was most likely to win ... ABC. Fortunately I'm in Hove so I can happily give my support to Peter Kyle.

Voting every 5 years? MPs / candidates selected by party central office? Funding for the two main parties largely from corporate interests with no major party committed to reversing the hollowing out of the social realm and the huge shift in wealth from the have-even-less to have-a-lot-and-want-even-more. Both major parties continuing arms sales to Israel and not calling out genocide. Both major parties see more private sector involvement in the nhs. Both major parties incoherent on the climate catastrophe response and looking to load the change costs on the many whilst giving free rein to the few and profiteers from the crisis
