Saw hard2hurt's video and thought it was pretty cool. The fact that it was bronze is what got me to buy it. You're exactly right -- this particular design is better in bronze. It's sharp enough. It's hard enough. Never having to worry about rust? Knowing that it can be re-worked if needed? I've known I wanted at least one bronze weapon for a while now, and this thing is a work of art.

I always forget a lot of things. We do these videos in one take! Yeah, bronze has a lot of special properties. An Empress Tomahawk could be buried in ground, recovered 3000+ years later, and someone could hang a handle on it and it’d be ready to go. A very underrated material. Thanks for being #12!

@@wingardwearables my focus has been on function and concealment for the most part, but since I got some room to work bigger recently I've been cleaning scrub and brush and wiring up and old barn, scrubbing country dirt off the outside. Good stuff for a mild winter. Just got a set of cold steel kukris and trainers for me and the family to use in the yard for that tool touch familiarity. When I out the new stuff in there's all kinds of good metal the last folks left behind. I've watched a few other videos. I'm not on the apostolic level. 12:44 yes AUS8 is not really rust resistant steel. its not bad for a lower end stainless steel, but obviously not great either.-- LC200N/Cronidur-30/Z-Finit (basically the same steel from different manufacturers) and Vanax (superclean/37) are almost rust proof steels, but they have their own special issues (cost, availability, heat treat, etc..) also H1 from Japan (not the H1 tool steel) that is basically rust proof as well, but fairly soft in the hardness of steels
@wingardwearables
@wingardwearables 3 жыл бұрын
Yeah they definitely got me with the “stainless steel” marketing, but it was cheap enough to buy and mod. I got the mini tac skinner, ground a second edge, and zip tied a big ass safety pin so I could pin it to my swimming trunks. The AUS8 rusted at a lower rate than the mild steel safety pin, but it was still rusting within a day, sub 4 hours of exposure to salt water. Was a bit disappointing. Bronze is definitely way softer than any of those “soft” knife steels, but I did do some underwater experiments and the Empress, to my surprise, chops like a blur underwater. Simple wrist flick and it simple buries to the handle on fleshy targets. My go-to swimming trunks carry.

The last two years I have started training with new weapons. Well, weapons in general, I was always into hand to hand stuff, but honestly I never thought I'd need it for much, I've used self defense many times in my life, but never with honest intent to actually kill or use force as far as this, I actually held back even in thise situations, but NOW , I feel the need is going to be there. Being my heritage is what it is, after training with the normal weapons, gums, blades, and melee weapons, I have now turned to tomahawk training , and war axes , because I might as well use a weapon that is also a tool. I came across a few reviews of your work and was very impress with your edc versions. Order coming in, me and my children will be working with them, training and building an entire form of self defense completely around these weapons, using ancient techniques mixed with modern skills to find the quickest form of stopping power against armed looters and criminals who will rise during this fire storm coming with the fall of the modern western society.
@wingardwearables
@wingardwearables 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for this comment-very good to train-and we do offer trainers that weigh close to the live blades. We try to incorporate scalable effects with all of our designs-self defense is a complex topic-so scenario dependent-and it can be handy for a single tool to be capable of less lethal force all the way to potentially deadly force. Depending on the anatomical target, the tomahawk can be instantly incapacitating.

It's like Ron Swanson had a son who grew up with the internet and, followed his interests and entrepreneurial spirit. I love the thought that has gone on in the design as far as what makes it a good weapon! It is so quick, and almost no one trains to defend against something like that. I don't expect to need a concealed carry tomahawk, but if I did-- I think I'd go with these. Even so, really want one because of how clever they are! Can anyone speak to how this thing would stand up to against modern body armor/bullet proof vests? I'm a little out of my depth, but I wonder if the hooked end won't push the fibers apart. The triangular shape of the "business ends" makes me think the wounds wouldn't stitch up easily! How are these things as a thrown weapon? What kind of stress testing has been put on them? I don't need a overwrought stress test from Sharktank, or of a Ren Faire hustler, but I'd like to see how well they hold up against drops and when the breaking points are regarding their intended use. It could be a disaster if the head slung off of the thing! One of the advantages of a melee weapon like this is the lower chance of collateral damage and of course without a head, it's pretty useless! I hope you'll have a cool answer and some video evidence What you say about the Bronze age... well, you really hit the important parts. The way to really do it was to control the tin supply, and that was hard to do, because people didn't like being taken advantage of and weren't easily subjugated. Still, as you mentioned, advances in steel technology, starting with intentionally creating it really put the nail in the bronze age's coffin. That said, plenty of things are still and have been made of bronze, brass, etc. in various alloys because it was the best choice. Video games give people a distorted view of metals and miss out on the fascinating properties of various metals. For instance, copper is naturally ant-viral! Cool, channel! I'm going to check out more, for certain

I don’t believe these tomahawks would do well on piercing layered Kevlar in a way that could create an incapacitating wound. I have tested the Empress and Backripper on layered Kevlar and just the very tip of the metal barely gets through. However, the hook side can be used to hook into fabric based armor to “tear down” an opponent to ground for finishing off with blows to unarmored portions of the body. All our tomahawks hold up very well for their intended use-percussive chopping, hooking and dragging heavy objects, etc. A properly wedged head-handle connection is quite strong. We have done a lot of stress testing on them and it’s very impressive how strong such a lightweight axe can be. In the future we may do videos showcasing true abuse of these tomahawks-just so folks know what these designs can and cannot handle, but they do just fine in their intended applications. Our tomahawks are each of different designs and throwing is far more abusive than the chopping and dragging motions that tomahawks are primarily made to do. The Backripper is not made for throwing. The Empress throws well, but don’t use wooden targets-it won’t stick as well and the load is too great. I use foam based targets with great success. Anyone can go to Home Depot or similar store and procure materials to make such a target. I use 2” thick polystyrene backed by 1/2” thick masonite board. Taped together it’s a large yet light target that the Empress does great on. The Stingray Tomahawk is made for throwing at wooden targets, but it is throws very fast and I found that flat targets, like boards and sawed tree rounds, could be very dangerous-if you have a handle impact the tomahawk can bounce back at you very quickly-too quickly to dodge. We recommend either round vertical tree trunk style targets, which eliminate the bounce back issue, or going with a flat foam target that absorbs a lot of the energy on handle impacts. Any wood handled tomahawk can eventually break under the shock and vibration of many throws. Glad you enjoyed the video.

Excellent video, very informative 👍 I've read accounts of Greek soldiers who'd simply bend and peen their bronze swords after battle, instead of having to have them reworked on a grinding wheel. 🤙 Funnily enough, on your mention of the ancient trading methods of Copper and Tin, there's an ancient clay tablet in a museum somewhere, from a merchant. And it's a complaint to a Copper trader in regards to the quality of it being garbage. I believe it's rather expletive too 🤣

would you ever consider making a basic ass bronze camping hatchet? something simply for beach camping? or does that contradict the purpose of bronze vs steel?
@wingardwearables
@wingardwearables 3 жыл бұрын
We haven’t considered that, and haven’t really considered making pure camping tools either. Everything so far has been made for everyday carry. I think a bronze camping hatchet is possible, but steel will perform better in utility chops and, even in very corrosive conditions, will perform well-it will require to be coated and cared for with greater attention than bronze to avoid corrosion. That’s a worthy trade off. No one material can do everything well.
