@@audreyhogan8285 Sadly yes, I must agree that this is true; many (probably most) Americans consider America the center of the universe (even if they don't fully realize they have that point of view). This concept is called by historians/social scientists as "American Exceptionalism." However, I am here to say that not ALL of us feel this way... Some of us appreciate the differences in and contributions from other countries & cultures. Some of us are bilingual by choice (meaning we studied to attain those skills, as RM has done.) So I hope non-Americans will keep this thought in mind about us. : )

As a former English teacher, I didn't care if my students English wasn't perfect, if they could communicate then that is their goal. It doesn't need to be perfect on a conversation;/spoken platform. RM is not only speaking, he is translating and interpreting, that's a handful besides probably monitoring content....and btw he speaks Japanese too..........we should be praising people like this! What a fantastic example he is.
@monicabohn24762 жыл бұрын
Exactly! My parents immigrated to the US from Germany and it took a while before they actually started thinking in English rather than running the translation through their heads from German to English. I'm sure RM, as fluent as he is in English, still thinks mainly in Korean so he is having to run translations through his head at least some of the time, even if it's happening so quick it's not really noticeable. When my mom would go back to Germany for visits she had to readjust to thinking in German again and it would take her a few days, even though German was her native language. And we use different parts of our brain to retain another language. My dad had a friend who was Hispanic and spoke English fluently but had a medical condition they didn't know about until he woke up one day and could no longer speak English....it was completely gone. The condition he had, sadly eventually shut down the rest of his brain over time and he lost the ability to do different things one thing after another, but the part of your brain that holds the information of another language is not the same as where all your root information is embedded as you learn and grow from infancy. Anyone who learns to speak other languages....or learns to do anything new that takes time and practice to learn...should be encouraged and admired. Heck, English is my native language and I certainly don't speak it perfectly...nevermind retain the German I learned but didn't use regularly enough to become fluent. I can't even imagine trying to learn Korean or Japanese or Chinese.....the writing alone looks like artwork to me. In English we have a lot of silent letters and words like 'enough' where the gh sounds like an f. Languages are complicated. They all deserve their efforts to be recognized and praised...they other six have greatly improved in their English skills. They all have to constantly learn new songs, new choreography, adjust the choreography for performances on different stages, keep up their social media, have interviews and appointments coming out their ears both at home and abroad, take care of their physical and mental health and much more and still try to find time for their families and friends. It must be exhausting sometimes....more than sometimes. And they are all learning English on top of everything else. I'd like to see anyone who makes fun of them manage to do even half of what they do. Wow...that got quite lengthy, didn't it?
@lunacouer2 жыл бұрын
@@monicabohn2476 That's so cool. It's like our native language is the operating system, and a new language is an additional integrated program. Thanks for explaining that. I don't know much about Korean, but from what I understand, their grammar structure is different too. So, in English, we would say "I want to sleep". But if we wanted to learn Korean, we would have to get used to the fact that a) They don't always say "I", because it's implied and b) the "want to" part comes after their word for "sleep". They use different endings to indicate the participle. That would feel backwards to us, so I imagine it feels backwards to them. So it's not just vocabulary, plus weird rules, plus a different alphabet system. It's also a different way of thinking. I give mad props to anyone who learns another language, especially when they can think in it. They've upgraded their brain, lol.

Being a person whose first & only language is English, RM speaks excellent English far better than some other native born English speakers. He tends to speak though with an American influence, but America has actually bastardised the UK English language (the fatherland of English) and so has Australia each has there own slang, and words. So the last people who should try to critique RM on English expression is Americans.
@l.b.54832 жыл бұрын
@@pamelakrause9311 Comment: I don't want to offend anyone who is different. A lot of native english speakers don't take it for granted that you speak english and they also learn other languages. Just remember that there's always more than one type of people. Native English speakers usually don't have to learn another language very well because it is the third most spoken language worldwide, especially in (huge companies and) the entertainment industry. So some native english speakers didn't learn an other language and will naturally hardly understand how difficult it is. Besides, in their environment everyone speaks english, so they assume (naively) that everyone should speak their language. Of course this is kind of rude/arrogant, but why would we take them serious. Some people simply don't want to understand it and spread hate to make themselves feel better. RM's english skills are great. I wish I could speak like that.

I’m not sure he makes intentional “errors”, but I can notice a difference in his English when you can tell his brain is tired, or he’s out of practice. That’s completely normal. I think people generally think that once you learn a language, it’s locked in for life, and that’s SO not true. Additional languages are often ‘use it or lose it’.
@monicabohn24762 жыл бұрын
My parents immigrated to the US when they only spoke German. My mom said people would sometimes make fun of her as she was learning to speak English which made her feel more insecure about it...but there were also those people who encouraged her and instead of making fun of her mistakes, helped her to learn from those mistakes. It takes a while for your brain to adjust and start actually thinking in a different language. My parents eventually started thinking in English, rather than running everything through translation in their heads and when my mom would go back to Germany to visit she would have to readjust to thinking in German and it would take her a few days even though German is her native language. When not used regularly you can stumble even in your own native language. You are absolutely correct that a second language is not just locked in for life and anyone who can speak in another language should be encouraged and praised....it takes a lot of work and practice...especially to become fluent. :)

I bet if we compared interviews where his translations are brief to their schedule, they're likely the ones at the end of a long day of press, after a flight, when he was feeling under the weather, or otherwise exhausted. I speak multiple languages and have had to be the only one translating for my group in the past (though thankfully never on camera in front of millions!), and the brain really does just get tired.

Now the thing is, many foreign people never fail to criticize us Indians, because according to them "Indians can't pronounce the words correctly, and that their English accent is really bad"... Well what I don't understand is that why does accent actually matter ?? Isn't it quite obvious that people living in different countries will have different accent ?? I really don't get it why people have to insult or criticize or even bully others just for being different... I myself have been criticised by two of my college mates.. The were from America.. Idk what exactly they thought about themselves because most of the students got criticised by them, just because we don't pronounce English like they do.. People are so bad nowadays 😔😔😔😔

@@baby_but_a_stay_forever , it is strange, but people are strange. People talk about how much they like a French or Italian accent, yet criticize other accents, very strange to me. I enjoy hearing different accents and languages. The only problem is sometimes I can't understand what is being said, so I have to keep asking the other person to repeat themselves. After asking 3+ times or whatever, I just feel like an idiot. But whoever is giving you a hard time regarding your accent sounds a tad xenophobic, and a lot rude.

His spoken English is fine as he gets his message across clearly. As for the interview you showed when he was saying things like, V, pictures, whow etc they were to me him having fun maybe even poking fun at those who bad mouthed his spoken English.

don’t give Namjoon a hard time for English speaking. I would also correct him too. I might correct him when I meet him. I don’t know when that will be. I like the members trying to speak more English but please don’t give them a hard time with their English. 💜🥺

To all of RM's critics of his English, I ask.....How much Korean do you speak....fluently? I can understand RM perfectly; his message always comes across. English speakers don't speak correctly, so why expect a non-English speaker to? People are hypocritical.

I honestly just assume he's tired of translating all of the time- even though he's really good at speaking english it's still probably hard to be expected to go back and forth- he's not a professional translator and he probably also gets tired of being kind of the only one talking if he just completely repeats whatevery one else says.

I am really proud of RM for his achievements with communicating the English language. I’ve traveled to a lot of countries and had struggled with speaking their language Including South Korea..The essence of attempting to speak a foreign language is to respect communications of understanding and patience . And that’s what RM has implemented very well.. The pressure he’s under is like a diplomat representing his country to the world. He always under media coverage and RM handles it superbly .. Tell me, how many haters can achieve that feat. You go RM👍💜

remember when he used to translate the whole sentence well sometimes just taking out words out of the thing is easier I do it too everyone's does it unconsciously its like saying " i want water" and breaking it down to " water plz" or just "water"

I agree, he is doing a wonderful job! As are the other members as well. Most Americans do no speak a second language and although we take these courses in school. We rarely have the opportunity to use them and so they never become developed. Yet, there are Americans that speak more than one language. BTS's hard work is very much appreciated!!!

For me it's not a matter of lacking grammar skills.... is his extremelly intelligent and has a sassy sense of humour!!!... He's cleverly lightening the mood during interviews. Through sumarizing long sentences in two or three significant words, he reinforces the focal ideas while surprising the listener so the level of attention don'nt drop... Members reacting to it make it more enjoyable!!! he's really a genius!!!... And I love them all!!!

i feel like he's translating that way so its easier for the other members to start picking up words too during interviews, he's pointing out the key words and english people will understand and to a degree the other members and maybe even other non english speakers can pick up the short translations too. so it helps teach while not being a full translation that loses non english speakers. i think it's better that way because it helps more people to understand, rather than just english speakers. it's actually pretty smart and inclusive tbh

I'm not knowledgeable at all about BTS as a group or individuals, but RM's fluent English speaking intrigues me. And this video highlighted something interesting to me. RM using basic English to add onto things the other members say could be unknowingly, or knowingly, helping them to learn English very slowly. Notice how the words RM uses when translating, though basic, are key words of the full sentence the other members use. Could be a useful tool in helping them form sentences in the future, if they hear it enough times. Obviously taking lessons of some sort to learn a language is a better way to learn, but it's still a neat thing that he does. Not sure if he's doing it intentionally, I've heard him speak in full sentences before, and he's fluent. But the fact that he translates in this way is actually very helpful to the other members, whether they know it or not.

How can anyone criticize this man on his English! Honestly, I praise him AND he even has the accent down, too. Namjoon speaks better English than many reporters, journalist, and MCs when I click on the TV. The fact that Namjoon uses “wrong sentences” when translating is probably because of time and, let’s face it, he’s probably tired of translating and gives the main points. (I mean, how many interviews has he had to translate for his 6 members especially during a promotion period?) I’m sorry. Namjoon, along with his fellow members, are so hardworking, creative, and intelligent. I’m so over the negative people out there who continue to try and bring these amazing human beings down. Borahae, loves! 💜🤟🏼

He is a kindhearted person who always cares about fans and his group and so clever and the best person who can be the leader of this incredible boy band. In my opinion all of the BTS guys are a real gentlemans and super talented in music and no one have right to talking disrespect about them or even anyone else without know the personor the people well . And if you ask me I can not imagine this group without dear mr. Kim Namjoon . And I'm sure the BTS members and other armys are agree with me :)
