On the morning of 31 December 1983, Nigerians awoke to learn that the Second Republic of Shehu Shagari had been replaced, during the preceding night, by a new Federal Military Government, the fourth since independence.
The leader of the coup d'état was Major General Muhammadu Buhari, the outgoing current president of Nigeria...

The constant coups in that period of Nigerian/African history had to be exhausting for the people. Every few years, you turn on the radio and hear that the country's leader has been forced out of office by someone you've never heard of who promises he's going to fix everything, only for him to be put out of office a few years later by this new guy you've never heard of who is making the same promises. With the obvious exceptions in the Sahel, I'm glad Africa is starting to stabilize and the people at least have a predictable political system.

Some were even months, Aguiyi-Ironsi lasted just 7 months until he was killed in a bloody counter coup in 1966, a coup which had come as a retaliation to the bloody coup that occured just 7 months earlier which brought him into power... The ripple effect of Aguiyi-Ironsi's death would end up leading to the Nigerian Civil War. Murtala Muhammed, another former Head of State would only last 6 months until he was killed in a failed coup, after he had entered power just 6 months earlier from another coup🤦🤦🤦. The political system in Nigeria was just crazy in the "60s, "70s, and "80s under Military rule... My grandfather will say it was the most economically sound and also the most unstable period in Nigeria. On paper, Nigeria was gaining a lot of wealth from the Oil-Boom, and when i mean a lot, i mean a lot to put Nigeria among the very top in the highest and fasting growing economics; but in reality, nobody was seeing the effects of the wealth, it was barely being used for development at all, and everyday civilians didn't really know were the wealth was going to, and they couldn't really complain because it was the Military regime.

I love your content. A great educational experience for all Africans and her descendants in the diaspora. I was in Victoria Island on that morning on holidays from boarding school in Jos. I remember Patrick Oke’s morning radio show on FRC2 being interrupted by the military announcement . However, some corrections. First, Buhari’s coup was not the 4th but the 5th military administration in Nigeria at that point. (Ironsi , Gowon, Mohammad, and Obasanjo.) Second, Buhari was not the outgoing president. (Or I may have misunderstood the narrator).

Nigeria was 'indisciplined' back then though. I was born in Nigeria, and there were certainly serious issues with corruption and lack of public order (fly tipping, jumping queues, etc). However, as the narrator said, you can't order the economy around, lol. Buhari's government wasn't intelligent enough to deal with complex economic problems back then, and unfortunately, the situation wasn't any different in his recent 8-year run as president.

Still controlled and rules from shadowy uk/eu colo-masters 99.99%. Afrika's not yet free from their colo-masters. And hasn't recovered from mental colonialism too. Extra extreme greed, selfishness, tribal & religious abuses amongst many self-destructive trends; plus disunity.
@beno1129
@beno1129 Жыл бұрын
You can't blame the West for everything going wrong in African countries today. This isn't the 19th century. Yes the continent's colonial past has contributed to many of its current problems, but ultimately the greed/corruption you mentioned is the main problem, not the former colonial masters. Indeed, these days many African leaders have ties with China rather than the West.
