How much does it cost? Is it worth it? Why Build in Mongolia? These are some of the questions we finally talk about in this episode after building our Passive Solar Greenhouse with Geothermal ground to air transfer system in Mongolia over the last 1 year. This is the first Passive Solar Greenhouse built in Mongolia that has also incorporated a full GAHT System Geothermal greenhouse. In this episode we speed up time and add parts of this build that we will remember forever.
This is all part of the adventure and joinery to an off-grid homestead in the land of the blue sky.

-1 degree in the green house morning means you guys are producing a cold resistance plants ;) . Just a joke. I am Hongoroo, Zulaa's classmate from the university and one of the first subscribers here :) . It is so great to see you initiating a wonderful work together with your hard working husband. Growing vegetables in Mongolian harsh winter is almost impossible for the small household. Zula you should be very very proud of you and your family for this pioneer work! My grandparents used to grow vegetables in northern part of Mongolia and my mom is still. One of my dream is to have a beautiful greenhouse that filled with many varieties of veggie. I would like to get some advice from you as well when I back to my homeland. Once again, hats off to you guys and all the best for your future projects!

Very nice project! Just a reminder on your citrus to pot them and add a heating or rooting mat underneath and insulate the pot since they like a minimum of 15c root temp. Winter leaf drop (WLD of green leaves) can be a real nuisance in northern climates but you could have a great outcome. Wishing you the reward of your labours from Canada!

I've followed your whole series but it was fantastic to see a summary of the entire project, especially cost. Great video. Nothing related to greenhouse but we only get 6 hours of direct sunlight around the winter solstice due to the mountains surrounding our land. The sunlight is usually pretty strong so we can heat our gers just on passive solar heat through the windows. We can turn off the heating completely as long as the sky is clear. Night time we're heating like crazy and our electricity costs are our highest bill.

Mongolia, in the very cold North. 35-40°C Temp diff. Well you went into the ground. Very well done. Fascinating. Maybe 15 years ago we made a Plexiglass roof. 2x layers with 3-4mm thickness and maybe 15mm distance with air. Distance holders, I think it's silicone. As a roof for a round tower on my house. A cone. 8-10m above ground level. Asymmetric. Radius around 4m. Height 1.5-2.5m. South Germany. Snow in the Winter. Still fine. I think it will last much longer. Frame below, made of vulcanized steel.

That is very interesting to hear that on the solstice, Dec 21st, you sun is at 18 degrees off of the horizon. We live near Anchorage Alaska and our sun is at 9 degrees off of the horizon at the same time. We just cant do much with 3 hours of sunlight at those times. I do like the design and its looks very functional.

nice greenhouse . but since Mongolia lat is under 50. you should extend your glazing over the top of the peak and down the roof quite a bit . then it will be more functional greenhouse as you are really limiting your growing space.. for me I live at ~52 lat in central Canada my greenhouse has similar shape to yours but my roof glazing extends to about 2 foot from the the north wall. and we have similar plant hardiness zones of around 2/3 . but I grow peaches and nectarines in my greenhouse (5/6 zone plant) . plus alot of tomatoes and peppers and other vegetables . but you have the benefit of living at ~lat 47 . your greenhouse will warm up much much faster then mine will. you probably have fully function greenhouse in late feb or early march. where as for me since I live considerably farther north and my sun intensity is so much lower . my functionality is not until April. though my northern roof slope is alot flatter then yours . as i use the it as snow catch and carry a snow load during the winter to act as an insulation barrier . just a suggestion to improve green house that will create far more growing space and other options . with that little modification you could turn you entire floor space of your greenhouse into 365 day growing space . as I even doubt with your cold temps ( of hardiness zone 2/3 of Mongolia) that greenhouse get that cold in the winter( i would think perhaps -5c at most) . it just in the summer your growing space is limited to 1/2 of the greenhouse

Thought Mongolia was mostly desert/ semi-arid. Might be a thing when choosing plants, water conservation, irrigation etc? There's been lots of work in Las Vegas, at least outdoors. I have no idea what fruits survive such low temperatures outside. Can you grow strawberries in the greenhouse, and plant them out in the spring? Not one or the other approach? I got some of that 4mm twin wall a couple of years ago and it says one side is anti-UV. Also taped up the ends to stop moisture getting in. Stuck it on the wall over windows on the inside with velcro. Good for frosted glazing. Not too heavy to take on and off.

You can use RGB led lighting to extend your light for plants. The reels that are RGB allow you to control the colour of the light. Also you can control intensity. It looks like a film reel and because it is LED it is low power consumption. If you want to pimp your geothermal there are a few ways tondonthat with hydronics being heated by solar. It will improve the heat battery effect.

It’s 10 feet by 20 feet. We live in south western Ontario Canada and we have pretty mild winters in comparison to Mongolia. We might get 4-7 days in the minus 20 Celsius range. great video. thanks for sharing. yours is the only build i have seen that goes to the 8-10ft depth below the greenhouse recommended to achieve proper thermal exchange for heating and cooling. It appears that you combined that with properly insulated sub walls to the true depth where others i have seen did not isolate the substructure which makes me question their practicality/efficiency. Are you finding that the stability of your internal environment is worth the investment?

I wonder if you can expand the greenhouse? You wouldn't need to dig down too much, but simply insulate the ground and expand outward so you can grow much more. I suppose you would have to calculate how much heat it retains. You can alternatively heat the greenhouse with solar energy at night, but this heat wouldn't need to be much since it is insulated and you have passive heating underground. Alternatively you could use solar energy to heat air and pump it down the heat battery underground, you could in this way hold much more energy. Well anyway, just passing thoughts, this greenhouse looks amazing.

I like to call these generational type projects, kids will be inspired to plant things, if you have more than you need your neighbors can plant starts inside. Its the type of project that brings people together, because the tradition of growing things is as old as the human story and with this project your climate inside will be much better than outdoors during winter, and even summer which will again attract people to do things inside that space. If you dig down 10 feet in most places in the world, you're gonna find maybe a 15 to 20 degree difference in your favor, its energy we need to harness just as much as solar.

You sounds competent to anser this questian =D If i digg down 1.5 - 2 meters to get the geotermic heat from the ground. Dont i change where the groundheat will be? If i build 4 meter width and 10meter long i can understand that it dont change mutch but a person i was at had 16 * 33 meters big and that might inpact the the depth where you find the geotermic heating?

Well done video! One question… when comparing costs of others’ builds are they in the same country? Many countries use dollars as their currency but not all have the same exchange rate. I don’t know if I’m saying that correctly but I just mean to say be sure you are comparing apples to apples, so to speak.
@SimpleWildLiving
@SimpleWildLiving Жыл бұрын
Thanks so much 🙏🏻 Toes Insand. My comparison was not to compare that Mongolia was cheap as if we built our greenhouse with the same material as used by a lot of overseas construction it would be much more expensive here.. and the material is just not available unfortunately.. it was to say that it is possible to build a DWG at a lower budget and make it more affordable to more people here in Mongolia. If we just built a greenhouse that no one it Mongolia could afford it and that would not change the future of agriculture in this country which is needs so badly!!

One big question is currently in UB area at night it is -35C is your greenhouse ok during such cold nights do these vegetables really surviving with day time heat accumulation or do you use extra heating like stove heating or electric heating in your greenhouse?
@SimpleWildLiving
@SimpleWildLiving Жыл бұрын
Well it -37 right now and it will drop to -42 in the night and so far so good in the greenhouse but we will see tomorrow morning. 🙏🏻 it -1 in the greenhouse at the moment and that’s ok as long as the ground stays above freezing which it will so the roots of the plant are fine.. it will be only super cold for the next 3 days and then heat up ⬆️

I want to plant trees, is it a problem to have the heating under the greenhouse with the roots in the future an maintenance. is it better to just go 1.5-2 meter down and isolate the walls and then make a geotermic piping next to the greenhouse. or do i miss the heating going up in the ground from the pipes if its under?

Well i was about to complain about the angle of south facing screens due to winter sun degree but aparently you were aware of it and placed it on purpose. If you use so called euroblock (gazoblock) for walling the green house as you were suggesting then all the humidity inside the green house will soaked into the gazo block which in return ruin the wall. It soaks the water like sugar cube. Another thing is about the cost. The cost is too high including the exacation too. Next time send somebody of course mongolian who is realble, to go and do the agreements, negotiations and shopping under your supervision. Zulaa aparently did not do good enough job or had a little knowlege in negotiating the prices down. Most of the traders tend to increase their prices by at least 25 percent when they see a foreigner. Good luck
@SimpleWildLiving
@SimpleWildLiving Жыл бұрын
Wow!! This was quite a comment and I was really not sure what to say.. First it seems like you were just trying to find something to complain about!! Second the idea on euroblock were just for the under ground and not for the foundation or walls of the greenhouse just to support the foam.. The Cost To HIGH!!! you just Joking right it is so cheap compared to 50k $ 70K $ in USA or UK!! How much did you spend on your Geothermal Winter Greenhouse here in Mongolia!!! When it comes to my wife she did a dame great job!!! And I’m so proud of here!! Plus I didn’t pay White Man Taxes because I’m not an Idiot!! We know how this work here.. I am not upset with your comment but Think you may of just wrote it in a non productive way.. As we are Work So So Hard for our family and to help improve the Lives on Mongolians..

I live in sweden and we have an angel of 10 degree in the winter and 55 in the summer. I would like to have a roof that start at the ground and build up in the north. So we can have bigger tree in the back. Whats your thougts about that? You have the revers hight in the south and low in the north. i understand its to get the sun in an good angel. will my greenhouse fail with this? You can see more the design here kzfaq.info/get/bejne/h5qDYJiIy7TGaWQ.html But we will make it standalone not against an other builden är build up ground on the north side or isolate it well And if i have it 2 meters down insted of 1.5 meter, and 8 width and 20 meter long and 2 meter deep. at the winter it will just hitt the north wall with 1 meter 7 Degree angel will give me 1:8 and it will just go down 1 meter from the groundleven in the winter and miss 1 meter on the ground. is this problem for the plants? do the miss the light or is it the heat they want?
