This reminds me of the time we had to replace our 30+ old microwave. It was a sad moment because it was an appliance my parents had before my older sister was born. Before we parted ways, I made a video memorializing it, thanking it for the services it gave to our family. And the fact that microwave we had outlasted the company/manufacturer says a lot beyond the phrase, "They don't make them like they used to anymore."

As someone trying to pursue a more nomadic lifestyle, I find myself conflicted in regards to this topic sometimes. On the one hand, older stuff tends to last much longer which aligns better with my pursuit of an eco-friendlylifestyle where I'm not putting stuff in a landfill sooner. On the other hand, older stuff tends to be heavier and more bulky which makes it less portable for the sake of being able to travel with it easily. I try to balance these 2 factors when making my purchasing decisions.

My grandma had given me an old landline, I bought a Cell2Jack adapter and now I can use the phone. I was so excited to hook it up and make phone calls on it. I love buying antiques and locally made stuff. Love the video!

I certainly prefer old televisions without all the DRM and spyware and such. Old phones that still have headphone jacks and SD cards. I use a search engine that doesn't automatically provide me with an AI overview of my results. I prefer video games that come with a physical disk and are offline only single player. Not exactly writing with a quill ;)...

I love finding old shortwave radios on market place or flea markets

I'm not much of a collector, but I have some family heirlooms including a violin from 1901 (great great grandfather). A few of my dad's knifes and guitar from when he was a kid.

My little sister always says that the old ways are better. The stove that came with her house broke down so she replaced it with on old iron gas stove that she had to have converted for propane gas. She likes that it's simple, has no electoral systems to fail, and that it's actually about as old as the house so there is some historical validity to have it there. Her tractor kept breaking down so she learned about how to drive oxen and raised a couple gelded calfs who now do all the heavy lifting on her farm. And they don't need gas and they don't break down. Yeah, she often frequents local farm auctions and antique sales. That's where she got most of her cast iron cooking implements. She has an old rotary phone, but hasn't yet had it hooked up.

Some awesome dialogue here, really enjoyed it particularly seeing some of the items you’ve bought (that lantern). Definitely something charming about having an item that carries some history and more often than not, in my opinion, older items have a greater lifespan being made with more love and attention. I bought a pair of Grado sr80x headphones at some point, and it's so nice that those were handmade in New York City and only had to travel one state over to end up at its final destination. I won a bowling ball at a banquet recently for $10 and that gives it a wonderful story as it sits in my arsenal. I like using old iPods that I can replace parts for instead of using a modern phones that aren't user serviceable. One of my iPods came from Germany from someone who appears to have been into ballet based on the engraving on the back and the wallpaper it had when I got it. I named this iPods after that person.

Old mechanical watches! I am currently wearing a Lucerne Electra wind up watch that was purchased at an Art and Antique shop in Rockport, TX. They had 2 mason jars that sat up on a high shelf full of old discarded watches and my wife was able to purchased both of the jars for 10 bucks. Going through and sorting out what we had, I fell in love with this Lucerne, it's made in Hong Kong and not much to look at even after my spit shine, but here it sits on my wrist ticking away and keeping near perfect time. I live the life of not having things that is worth a lot to others, just what's worth a lot to to me, no matter what I payed for it, if anything at all!

My parents bought a Sony CMT-CP11 brand new back in 2000. The stereo is still going strong 24 years later and sounds fantastic. I have an AirPort Express hooked up to it to stream music to it and it’s great. Sounds better than most modern speakers. I’ve also got a marantz CD67 SE from 1997 in my personal setup. I love old audio gear and how reliable it is. I recently serviced and fixed a Sony CDP-S37 from 1987 which will be gifted to a mate of mine

I've got a JVC UX-T1 CD player microstereo from 1993 which has a broken laser, broken but probably salvageable remote, and no display backlight (but display numerals). It's a family treasure, to me at least, and I won't throw it out. It still functions perfectly for AUX input from my TV, my mobile and all my Playstations. I just gotta keep looking for a repair company and whatever it'll cost, I bet I'll pay it. I miss waking up to music in my living room, programmed from CD the night before. I might even start doing CD-R/RW projects again for this very purpose.

I have a complete working set of antique woodworking tools. I can build a house and furnish it without using any electricity. A few more additions to be made and I can go from tree to sitting room without it. Also...the recycling value of reusing old things far exceeds buying anything new of "renewable" materials. You save ALL of the emissions if you simply don't need the new thing made at all.

I have an old fully manual typewriter... haven't used it so far, but it's there in case a Carrington Event blows out the power grid. 😅 Also have some heavy vintage pruning shears I DO use multiple times per year around the yard.

While I do use mostly modern appliances and devices i have a use it till the wheels fall off policy. One example is that i have had 2 smartphones in 10 years and i still have the 2nd one now. I Think that if you look after something it should have a reasonable longevity even if they dont build them like they used to. 😊

I am not sure where you live but sometimes you can walk around your neighborhood and find some vintage treasures that people have thrown away. I also love vintage things.

My marantz amp from 1970 is a beast , my technics platine is 40 years , I have an old commercial fridge made of wood aluminium and cork for isolation and restore it to made my buffet . Old thing are way better in many case

Well, I also like older stuff more than atleast most of the new things. And I do collect some old things like phones, lightbulbs, batteries, computers/laptops, game consoles, flashlights, iPods/mp3 players, tablets and some other things. And I'm now also even more interested in physical media like DVDs and Blu rays since your video about that!
