Old age is one of life's dark secrets, secrets no one has any interest in finding out about. We have created a society that just concerns itself about the young. Until we change that, we will change nothing. Empowering people is a start, valuing them is the nest step, it will be a long road, but even the longest journey begins with a first step.

I agree social care has gone right down the drain, I worked for social care as a career and I had to leave , we weren't given enough time with each individual person, and we were given so many people to see in just a few hours, and most of these people are very confused and can't be rushed, I used to go home and cry sometimes to see how these people were treated by the social care system, I could go on and on , I am just glad I am not in that job now. O and my name is Judy whitear, just incase any of the office pen pushers are reading this

Alzheimers UK have an amazing site where you can register for voluntary or work positions - as a one to one or even to support the wonderful new choirs that are starting locally to bring people with dementia together - as this will probably affect most of us as we age - it's a really wonderful opportunity to make a difference right now

The reason the government don't care is they can afford private care when there time comes a quick visit from someone in and out is not enough people need to feel loved or at least that someone actually does care

@lupina virgo I think like you it is important for family to be caring for the elderly. Unless you are totally housebound and unable to go out, may be it is time for Carers to come in and help or Nursing Home. I also think neighbours sometimes can help too. I do know some of my friends neighbours do shopping for them, then he or she will have a chance to talk and interact with.Yes, Carers and Nursing Home are not cheap unless it is paid for by the Government or Council? Before housebound it is best to help yourself, get out, walking, joining a lunch club or something to talk to friends and someone. We are living much longer now, family should adapt and care for your elderly relatives. Take them out for lunch or a meal, wouldn't that be nice? Yes, we look after our children when they were young, our totally responsibilities. Now let's have some reverse, don't have to be totally.

Just an idea, the two that had to quit,(which I totally understand) maybe the elderly could get a petition signed or maybe you two could visit them at home. It's so sad. I've been watching more on the elderly and loneliness. Maybe have a building where they can meet and talk, crochet, play cards, share stories from their past, etc.

@Robin Ellison, Such venues and services are offered to individuals who suffer Psychiatric disorders or "Mental Health" issues and are called *Peer Support* centres. Of course, such venues could be created to welcome and assist the elderly and lonely as well or separately. Anyone who is *truly interested* in helping with such a venue could apply for *government grants* and *private grants* in order to fund them.

Yes, there are clubs, libraries where they can go to knit, play cards, chats etc.... Join a lunch club with picking up and dropping off, in churches, community centers. Not only to have lunch, play cards, bingo, raffles etc... I know I have been before the Lockdown. Just pay a small fee. Going again when open and safe. Just have to find out where and when to go.

I was the sole carer at home for my wife who had dementia. There was little or no help from local council , all they seamed to want was to take our home away from us. Since she died end of February there has been no help what so ever. It is real lonely even though i have reasonable health , my hobbies and my best friend a little dog and my son who lives a long way away . Funny how people simply disappear after the funeral

I know that could happen or council could ask you to move to smaller accommodation. But in the meantime you are helping your mom and at the same time helping yourself. Hopefully later you can care for others and earn a little or get your pension and be independent when the times comes. But should you not be claiming for your mother's Career's benefit and save your money for later? I know someone claimed Career's benefit for her grandma. It is perfectly legit. It is unforeseen circumstances. I hope you don't end up homeless. God bless you.

I have a niece who I help once a week with her children. I fell and injured my ankle and did not hear from her for a week. I finally decided to call her and said, oh honey I haven't heard from you. I could not believe how she insulted me. She said, you are never satisfied, what more do you want? I don't have time for phone conversations. We are living our lives. Needless to say, my heart was broken. I wept for a week as I limped around, trying to figure out what happened. She doesn't give me anything nor have I ever asked for anything. I drive to her home to care for her children, cook for her and treat her with the up most love. I simply responded by saying, I feel lonely. She said, well stop feeling lonely. It's been 30 days and my heart still aches. Hearts are turning cold.

Actually this is the case in all non-Western cultures. There isn't a system that takes care of the Elderly so the children must look after their parents and of course they're raised with the expectation that they will do so. This is probably also because mothers spend much more time with their children when they're young instead of chasing a career. What goes around comes around. If you don't take care of your kids why would they care for you when you are Elderly. They've never established a strong bond nor have they seen care rolemodeled to them.

Age UK is excellent. We must all do so much more to give companionship and activity to older people and others who are alone. I cared full time for my mother with dementia, having to give up my good job, lovely countryside home and partner of twenty years but it was the greatest thing I ever did and would do it all again. The Council provided nothing. They had websites and leaflets full of wokery and waffle and lists of sources of help, all of whom simply had websites and leaflets referring you to each other - who did nothing. Private carers were varied individuals, some wonderful and some a disgrace. Despite persistent pleas, we never had any continuity. 14 different individuals sent in two weeks. I’d hired them to help so that I could pop out or do paper work while they chatted to my mam or did some light cleaning. Because they were always new and low calibre, more time was spent on giving introductory info than was spent on anything useful. None of them seemed to stay the allotted time. Imagine what it’s like when there’s no caring, overseeing relative. One said she’d heated a meal in the microwave for my mam. We had no microwave.

This is going to sound horrible, but we try way too hard to make people live longer, when their "extended" lives are horrible. We are supposed to die - nobody wants to believe that, but we all die. Extending lives as we do only ruins the lives of their younger caregivers, who should be enjoying their own lives. Absolutely no-one in this video is happy.

Or perhaps work towards a paradigm shift so children grow up seeing it as their duty to look after their parents since the parents took care of them when they're little. Oh but they didn't. Most Western parents choose to go to work to be able to pay strangers in nurseries look after their offspring. There's your root problem.

Noone cares for the young either. It's not just the older generation. The systems a total mess. People who most in need get very little help or non at all.
