Charlie's figured out that the trick to surviving hauntings is a lot like surviving bear encounters; just stand your ground, show no fear and the ghosts will back off. Or fly into a wall with their red ass sticking out like a baboon's.

Jumpscares are fine when they're a consequence of actions or behaviors the player is expected to avoid, or when they're used to indicate a change in the state of gameplay, but when they're used so frequently as to communicate nothing to the player about whether or not they're playing the game well, they stop being scary. Jumpscares are really scary when seeing one makes you think "oh shit, that means the ghost is in the room with me and I need to leave or she'll get me," or "oh shit, the monster sees me, my hiding spot wasn't good enough and now it's coming after me." This game doesn't even look like it has a failstate--there are no negative consequences for messing up in this game, so nothing actually scares you beyond the initial shock of a loud noise.

This is why I like survival horror. I wanna shoot shit, do puzzles, run away if I need to, manage supplies, and see cool monsters. Just running in the dark with a shit flashlight is boring.

Just thought I’d try to answer the question, “why can’t horror games actually be scary,” and I think the reason is because horror games(or at least more modern shitbox horror games) can’t capture that sense of dread that you could get from before. I think it’s like the first time playing slender when it first came out and made that type of horror genre, and compare it those new firecracker fart games in the same type of horror genre.

Maybe I'm easily entertained, but I prefer to read horror and have nightmares for my scares any day over playing a horror game/watching a horror movie. Someone clever using our imaginations against us is the scariest thing about the horror genre and that just doesn't translate well to the screen imo. I will concede that asian horror films are pretty damn scary but American horror is just jumpscare trash burying the sadly short list of Ari Aster's work
