Why Can't Matt DiBenedetto Keep A Ride For Long?

Matt DiBenedetto only 4 years ago was the lovable underdog of NASCAR, endearing him to just about every NASCAR fan. Fast forward to 2023 and he is out of a job right at the end of NASCAR silly season and was not exactly setting the field on fire in the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series as well. So with that being said I want to look both back a bit at how his career has shaped up so far as well as where it could go from here. In this we will look back at and see why can't Matt DiBenedetto keep a ride for long?

It makes me wonder how the initial breakup went down behind the scenes. If he felt that he was better than the team and how he was around the garage may have factored in to letting him go after they were eliminated from the playoffs. It sucks but I think there is more to the story.

I just think it’s sponsorship. He has decent talent and can compete for a win. But lack of sponsorship is just forcing him to go from ride to ride without much guarantee of keeping the ride.

There are plenty of drivers that shouldn't have sponsorship yet do. It's just a matter of how hard the teams marketing department is willing to work to get sponsorships.

Other than money because the Smithfield leaves then that car is sponsorless for a long time which is not good for a team at all if you want SHR to fall off even more that's exactly the way to do it.

This guy just can't seem to catch a good break when he needs it. Just as the team was starting to look up, he decided to leave, only to get replaced three races before the end of the season. That really hurts. DiBenedetto's obviously got the talent, so somebody has to hire and somewhere. I'd like to see him in the cup series Once Again, and maybe be in some very competitive equipment for many years to come.

Tbh I analyzed his performance at Wood Brothers and came to conclusion that his results were only slightly better than that of Paul Menard unfortunately. Yeah, he's been much better that Burton, no doubt, but all in all Matt D is an average driver who has been extremely overhyped. Of course he could be still in Cup and maybe one day he could win a race or two but in general people trying to fit him into every possible open ride is hilarious. Y'all need to move on, DiBenedetto has never been that good

He doesnt have sponsors that follow him (as compared to sponsors that are with a team, or a car specificly) but he out performs almost everything he drives. the man deserves a ride in nascar, he is one of the most humble drivers i have ever seen. i have had the pleasure of meeting him in person and you can just tell he is different than the rest!

He should look at IMSA. He's a decent road racer, I'm sure there's an LMP2 or GTD team that would love to have him.

I don't know about his road course prowess, but maybe the problem stays with the relative lack of visibility of IMSA in comparison to NASCAR. GT racing and in general endurance racing relies heavily on pay drivers, maybe even more than NASCAR, and if the problem with MattyD is lack of sponsorship, I don't think that going to these series will be his saving grace. No matter the series, if you don't have sponsors you're screwed

Getting demoted down to the truck series really hurt him. Just a couple years ago he had a solid ride with the wood brothers. Matt just seems to be that type of driver that can’t find a consistent team so he just jumps from car to car hoping for a competitive ride. A very strange case for him.

He needs to win more races. Everyone talks this dude up, but the only thing he ever won was Talladega by a nose. If he's that competitive and that good of a driver, he can take any car good or bad and put it in victory lane. He always puts it mid pack and is barely towards the front

With how his splits have gone and his little tantum after losing his ride in the 21 I'm starting to think there's something more to him as a person that makes him very unpleasant to work with. I think as well as Rackley wanting to get a jump on 2024 I think things may have crumbled behind the scenes after he said he wasn't coming back. Maybe thinking he's deserving of a "better" ride that he really isn't deserving or worthy of? Like thinking he's too good for Rackley? Things got really weird really quick with Rackley so I think there's absolutely more to that story in particular

I never understand why there is so much concern for him, and so many people making excuses for him. He never seemed to show any talent or potential or promise, just another so-so mid-pack at best, end of pack more often Maybe in person he is a super nice guy and that is why everyone is always pulling for him? There must be a lot of really nice people who can't cut it competitively in a race car, that's nothing to be sorry about.

DiBenedetto made the Cup Playoffs (in 2020) and Truck Playoffs in 2023), won the Talladega truck race in 2022, has multiple breathtaking near-misses for victory in Cup where he was leading with 1 lap to go, etc. He's a solid driver. Doesn't tear up equipment too often. But needs to be just a LITTLE more aggressive to remain in the top-3 Series.

Whatever ride he's able to get into, he's gotta out perform the equipment than it did the previous season(s). This wasn't the first time he left a team on his own without a seat for the next season. He did that with the 32 cup ride. Hope he can rebuild his career.

I’ve stood beside Matt Dibenedetto as a huge fan of his since very early 2019, and this is a new low. I understand that this sport is cutthroat, but dang this man can’t catch a breath without a team dumping him for whatever reason. He’s not a superstar, I will never say he is but he’s one of the more consistent guys out there. I can only cope and hope that he’ll land anywhere in the sport. He has very little, if any sponsorship support. And in my opinion people give him a bad rap for his run at the Wood Brothers. His stats were very comparable to Blaney, just didnt win.

I think the first problem mattt has is definitely sponsorship deals . And for sure has the talent. Best option at this point would be an xfinity ride for is to be unknown. Im a fan of his he definitely deserves better. But now in days it seems more like kids and the parents money giving them rides compared to actually talent. I kinda draw parallels of Matty D's career to that of Brett Moffitt's. Clearly has talent, but has no sponsorship, isn't young enough and also it's becoming pretty clear that neither have the best people skills. I wouldn't be surprised if a mid to lower tier Truck team picked him up, like the #9 truck maybe. And he'll do decent. His career definitely isn't over.

Bell is a nice guy and a good driver (sucks that he's driving for Grandpa Joe) but Cindric and Burton? They flat out suck ass. They have rides cuz of their last name. Cindric is in the #2 cuz his daddy, Tim, is one of Penske's top guys in his organization and Burton is in the #21 cuz he's the son of Jeff Burton, the only Burton that found success in NASCAR (no offense to Ward).

I've thought this as well. The way things went south with Rackley as ridiculously fast as they did makes me think something went on behind the scenes. Then we've also seen he can throw a temper tantrum when he feels wronged

Additionally, I'd also add that, while he's a solid driver, he is not good enough to overcome his shortcoming of being a PR disaster. Kurt Busch was a PR disaster but was able to persevere in Cup (albeit with lesser equipment for a couple years) because he was so dang talented. Matty D has talent, but not THAT level of talent.

If he leaned into the right wing shit, he could probably get more sponsors. But whining about being kicked out when he hadn't done anything special, but, at least from what it seemed from the comments I saw at the time, he seemed to think he was god's gift to racing, will turn anyone off, no matter their political leanings. If it had been one or the other, he might be ok. But both within a few months of each other was the nail in the coffin.

I probably don’t agree with the politics of a lot of drivers/teams, but I don’t want to hear about it and that’s fine with me. Entertain me on the track. I like some personalities better than others. I want to just enjoy the racing! Matt made himself a sponsor nightmare with his antics. I don’t feel sorry for him and I used to like him.

I’ve always liked him and pulled for him. Lack of sponsorship dollars is a challenge for anyone, but relative to his talent level it seems he has more trouble than most. He has his share of whiny comments and spats. I don’t think anything he has said is all that bad and I just thought he’s the kind of dude that wears his heart on his sleeve - not terribly unusual in NASCAR. However… I just wonder if behind the scenes he tends to be more like the outburst Matty D than the public-facing endearing Matty D we came to like. No way to know, just a thought. Still I hope he finds something competitive to stick in for a while.

He’s rarely ever had top 20 equipment. Other then 7 Xfinity starts with JGR he was a start and park driver. Only his last 3 seasons of cup did he ever really have a hope of even a top 10 finish. His truck team had 1 top 10 in team history before he came along. He does a lot with a little, doesn’t tear up stuff but can’t find sponsors. I think he does his own PR instead of hiring someone to do his talking which probably hurts him.

Do we really think Rackley could run well without him? Every car after him hasn't. Even in 2020 when bell took over at Leavine their stats are very similar, Burton cant repeat his stats. He just needs a sponsor and it seems that his general attitude is better and he's came a good ways from some comments in the past.

@@specksofdust Burton already got announced when his social media thing happened. Greg Irwin brought a freaking Martinsville car to Sonoma. If you listened to the scanner you would understand how bad of a crew chief Greg Irwin was. He had no idea how to adjust a car. 400 mile race Matt would say im tight and 5 pit stops later he’d still be tight. Also no practice cause of covid didn’t help.

Me either. I get the vibe he is kinda fake Infront of the camera. I can't pinpoint it either but I just get that feeling. His interviews don't really feel genuine. Besides when he finished 2nd at bristol, that seemed genuine but the rest of the time it just feels off. He might be nice Infront of the camera but that doesn't mean he actually is behind the scenes

Like many others have said it comes down to sponsorship money. Eric Amerola and Riley Herbst are trash drivers but the have sponsor money so they stay with a decent ride even thou they have 0% talent

the issue is definitely in the results. you can't have three top 5s in two full-time seasons and expect to keep a competitive Truck ride. i understand that Rackley isn't what most people consider competitive, but Matt DID win a race and make the playoffs in that truck

Matty D is the man! If he ever gets in good equipment he will get the wins. He consistently finishes higher than his equipment. If h e is in a 18 to 20th place car he wil finsh 10 to 13th. This kud has so much talent. If he ever gets the sponsorship dollars he will win lots of races. God will shine his light on Matty D before all is said and done. 😊
