Captain Tom was only in Burma a short while, whilst my father and many others were still fighting the Japanese in 1946. The FOURTEENTH FORGOTTEN ARMY. (My father joined 1936 aged twenty, and went through the war with an aortic aneurism and two holes in his lungs from nursing TB patients in China) He was also one of the last from Dunkirk in a tug called the Medway Queen, and gave blood arm to arm in the middle of battle.he also kept refusing his commission "it was just a job" and he never collected his medals) I did years later after he'd passed away aged 75 due to the medical conditions the coroner told my he was probably born with the aneurism. He left the war as a Lt. He had 300 men to look after in the last two years. THIS WAS MY HERO, who never courted the glory.

It was NOT raised for 'the NHS' - that always makes it sound as if it went to healthcare and medicine directly, it purchased things like iPads for waiting rooms etc and welfare charities - but the entire fund raising played on the nations fear and love of the NHS. You only have to look at the prices of stuff in charity shops these days- a jacket can cost you £35 in a charity shop and they get it for nothing! Handed in by someone wishing that a poor person be able to buy it for £7-10. And it’s not just the less well off you see frequenting charity shops these days- I personally see a lady I have known for a certainty as very wealthy doing the rounds of the charity shops every week of life, buying up ‘bargains’ to her who can afford to buy brand new, but very pricey to a less well off person. The canny rich paying above the odds happily for stuff is the reason for charity shop high prices these days. And I’ve seen books in Oxfam second hand for £25. Handed in for free. How is anyone supposed to afford that?
