Breakdown my thinking, creative process, and techniques in my shortfilms with Unreal Engine. In today's Behind the Shots, I talk through the cinematic camera tricks I use to make my Unreal render more like a film. Quick tips that you can use it too to improve the "Cinematic Vibe".

Omg, this was more helpful than six other videos on the topic! As a person with zero real life film education or experience, everything you’d like to on cameras, or on the visual storytelling process would be absolutely eaten up by me!

Thanks for telling people about not rotating the camera on the z too much. It's the #1 thing people get wrong with cam shake and it totally ruins their shots. Great tip. Listen up folks!

Would be awesome to have an insight on how to make use of the interpolation and tangeant (1:21) i'm having a hard time having the interpolation i want, It just seems very cheesy when ever i wanna modificate the tangeant.

Hi I notice after using the Lens Distortion PPV, it makes the Render Passes (Object ID mainly) not aligning with the Final Image. How did yoo deal with this? Also Would be great if you can explain what render passes you extract and how you use it too in compositing :)

Thanks for this! I was curious about the plugin. Ive tried custom lens pp mats for lens distortion and found that it actually pixelates the image and youll see some ugly aliasing. Is that the same for this plugin?

And another one! Would love to know more and how your experience prepared you. Also what would be the minimum requirements needed in Film Study, Cinematography (or if James Cameron's Master class is enough), Computer requirements, and how much time it takes if one had your set up. This (again) is top notch and just need to know the level of investment.

Good question. I think it’s a grinding process. To me the most important things in filmmaking are figured out through watching a lot films repeatedly, also making films myself. But nothing stops you from making something in Unreal as it requires minimum hardware to start. Master class is great but that’s def not the silver bullet. Try to make something, compare it to films have similar sequence, see how other would’ve done it. That’s how I started to be honest. Hope this helps!

Awesome when someone confirms exactly what you think yourself the all time. I always imagine these cameras are actual cameras which need to be transported, I have limited amount of "camera guys", they never teleport, they never aim the camera perfectly, they don't fly (unless they have some camera rig). Sad truth is that even in present action movies, overloaded with CGI, people who make shots don't give a shit about any realism of shots and everything looks as synthetic as can be.

You did this all in Unreal? Not Unreal to Maya? amazing. I'm sure I speak for everyone when I say we wanted to see the entire process, start to finish! leave nothing left untalked about. From idea, to storyboards, to previs, to final. Do you have different files per shot or every shot done in Unreal? What about coverage? gah, so many questions...THANK YOU

I know this is old topic but I have a question. I have a camera shake on my sequence (8sec), and as I work in pathtracing my renders are long (10hrs+). So I have to stop the renders and continue some other time and so on. When it is finish and I check it I noticed that there is a radical a movement tha frame where I stop/start the render again, as if the camera shake reboots itself or as if the camera movement reestarts from frame 0 or something. How do I keep the movement of the camera shake constant?. HELP! PS: I noticed the same thing happens in EasyFog, when the wind is activated, the fog looks in different positions in the frames I start/stop render again 😥

Something I've been aware of in CG movies is when the camera does something a real camera couldn't such as following a character making an impossible move or tracking 180 degrees while corkscrewing, flipping and keeping the motion perfectly smooth. They could have made a cut and not all that rigging and made their lives much simpler

I don’t use blender personally, but my new projects Maya has very little involvement (only rigging). Other steps are all in Unreal.
